Any book from the list. I'll clarify
Any book from the list. I'll clarify

Share with us your 5 star book, the list it was on and which book you chose to read from the list.
Go to Explore, then go to Popular. Input the month of your birthday and the year 2012 into the search engine on the right hand side. A list of the most popular books publish that month will appear. Choose one of the top ten to read.
Oh by the time we get started with this december will be just around the corner and you don't have to do this challenge first. But if you want to read it before the end of the year then do the same thing just read the 2011 version.

One of the top ten only? *sulks*
Why are yours bad? I have just looked up my own and they are not that good either! Should we make it the top 20?

Well I can't do anything about that. I'm sorry to say I don't have any influence on what books are popular :) You will just have to choose the least terrible one. But as I said we can extend it to 20 if that helps. I don't want to go over that number because that is not really very popular then is it.
Mine aren't that bad. Not sure which one I want to read yet though. One question of the added books is a trilogy bundle. If I go for that one do I need to read the trilogy or just book 1.

Hmm, was the trilogy published as separate books before?

Lauren wrote: "No.1 on my list is a brilliant book, but I've already read it :(
Hmm, was the trilogy published as separate books before?"
Yes. It is about the Fifty Shades of Grey books. Not sure if I want to read it, but maybe this is the excuse to see what everybody is going on about. :)

I was wondering how a full set made it into the top 20. Given that the books were already pubished and it's the set that is on the list, I'd say you should read all three. But that seems unfair to me. Anyone else have an opinion?
The problem is if I read the sample chapters I want to read the whole thing. I always finish the books I read, no matter how bad they are.
I can just as easily pick one of the others because there were others that looked interesting. I was just asking because I was wondering what if. So don't worry.

It think it it is a series of books that is on the list choosing one book from the zeroes is fine. It is supposed to be fun not difficult :)
Well there are members in this group whose "auto correct" plays up more regularly and also I like puzzles, but I did have to read your comment 2 or 3 times before I understood what it said. :)

I've tried this a few times and am having problems as it resets to the current month every time. So I choose the month I want, click on view, then get the October 2012 list again. Am I missing something?
I vote for 20 books as well please. YA and paranormal are not normally high on my preferred reading list!

Yes please, thanks Lauren. :)
Ok then 20 it shall be, I bow to peer pressure :)
I have also had some difficulty with the page jumping back to October but found that if I gave the page a while to download fully when I first opened it, then it was fine when I changed the dates.

This is an interesting one! Can we make it part of the task that you have to say which author you used?

Yes, I forgot to mention that part

The list contains a couple of winners and a lot of nominees. Can we pick from both? Also I saw that amongst the winners were some graphic novels and books that don't comply with our normal rules (one had only 32 pages). Can we pick any of them or do the normal rules still apply?

Lauren, why is the task I nominated in message 4 not in the official list in message 1? Don't you like it? :(

Hahaha. :)

Whoops, sorry! I've put it in the list :)
Guys, if I miss any nominations, please let me know!

I was a bit hesitant to nominate a second task seeing as you didn't acknowledge the first one. :D I will think of one and post it later today.
Select "My Books" at the top of the screen. From your own bookshelves (excluding Read/To Be Read/Currently Reading), select the shelf with the most books. Select one of your favourite books from that shelf. Click on the book's name to be taken to that book's Goodreads page. On the right hand side is "Readers also enjoyed similar books". Select one of the books on the list and read it - you can expand the list by clicking on the small circles at the top of the list. To complete the task, tell us the name of the bookshelf, the book you used to select the read, and the name of the book you read.

Lol :)
Choose a friend on goodread, then choose a book from their favourites shelf. Then choose a book from the relating Readers also enjoyed similar books column on the right hand side to read.
Let us know which friend and which book lead you there.

Lu, would you mind changing that a bit in some way? Task 7 is almost exactly the same, the only difference being that you can choose any of the recommended books.

Oh I didn't see that one!
Mmm let me think of something else. Mind deleting mine?

Agreed

Agreed

Note: not all quotes will come from books or from books that can be used for this challenge, so you'll have to find a suitable quote.

From now until 30 October you may nominate 1 task per week until we have 25. Each task must be based on a feature of the site. For example:
- Go to Listopia. Do a search on one of your favourite genres or sub-genres. Read a novel from the top 5 of one of the lists that comes up.
- Go to Goodreads Voice and read one of the novels recommended by the authors there.
If you can't think of anything, then just play around with the site features until you get some ideas. The idea for this challenge is to explore Goodreads, so lets try to include as many different features in the tasks as possible ie. if two people have already used Listopia, don't nominate it again.
The challenge so far:
1. Open Goodreads, click on the arrow to the right of the Explore tab at the top of the page. Click on Goodreads Voice, then click on Good Minds Suggest. At the bottom of the page, click on More Good Minds Suggest. Choose one author from that list and read one book s/he recommends. NOTE: Tell us which author recommended the book you chose.
2. Click on the Explore tab at the top. On the right there is a tab for Recent Award Winners - click it. Then go to the "Goodreads Choice Award" and read one book on the list.
Easy link to the list: http://www.goodreads.com/award/show/4...
3. Go to the bottom of any page and press the Our Blog tab. Read any of the books discussed in the blogs posted in 2012 or 2013.
4. Go to Explore at the top of the page. Click and select Listopia. Scroll down the page until you find "Lists my friends have voted on". Select a featured list, or click on "More" for additional options.
When you select the list it will only show those books your friend have voted on. Go to the top of the list to find the heading "Name of list - Friend's name's votes". Click on the name of the list to open the full list.
To complete the task, tell us which friend voted on the list, which list you used and then read any book from the list.
5. Pick a book you rated 5 stars. On the book's page, scroll down to "Lists With This Book". Read any other book on one of these lists.
Share with us your 5 star book, the list it was on and which book you chose to read from the list.
6. Go to Explore, then go to Popular. Input the month of your birthday and the year 2012 into the search engine on the right hand side. A list of the most popular books publish that month will appear. Choose one of the top twenty to read.
7. Click on Recommendations at the top of the page. Recommendations are provided according to your Goodreads shelves. Pick a shelf (either from the menu on the right or from the lists pictured) and read one of the recommended books.
8. Select one of your favourite authors who is using goodreads (by trial and error). Read a book that they have rated 5 stars, and let us know which author you chose.
9. 10. Choose a friend on Goodreads, then choose a book from their favourites shelf. Then choose a book from the relating Readers also enjoyed similar books column on the right hand side to read.
Let us know which friend and which book lead you there.
11. Click on Explore at the top of the page and select Quotes. On the right is a list of tags, with an option to see more or search. Choose or search for a tag that reflects one of your passions, eg. reading, romance, religion, etc. and read the quotes that come up. Find one that inspires you, 'like' it, and read the book that it comes from.
Note: not all quotes will come from books or from books that can be used for this challenge, so you'll have to find a suitable quote.
12. Go to Explore at the top, Click Goodreads Voice.
Then click either the option Goodreads Live (Here read a book by one of the author's listed) or Debut Author Snapshot (Here read one of the books the next to the author's picture).
13. Read a book from The South African Booklovers' bookshelf. (While browsing anywhere in our group, click on "Bookshelf" in the upper right-hand corner.)
Or use this link : http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...
14. Go to the bottom of the page and click on the About Us tag. Scroll down to the Who Are We section and click on the photo of one of the two founders or Goodreads: Otis Chandler of Elizabeth Kuri Chandler. Read any book one of these two rated 5 stars.
15. Go to Explore at the top of the page and click on the down arrow next to it. Click on Ebooks. Choose a book on this list and read it. If you have a hard copy of the book you are welcome to read that instead of the ebook version.
16. Click on Explore and select Listopia. On the right is a list of tags. Select the page number of tags which is the same as the challenge number (i.e. number 16). Select the Tag number which matches the task number (this will give you a choice of 2 tags, depending on which way you count). Then select a book off one of the Lists under the chosen tag. To complete the task you have to indicate the date you selected your book, the tag that you used, the list that you selected and the name of the book that you read.
17. Select a book from your TBR list that has a quiz about it. To find a quiz relating to a certain book, click on the book's name to view the details, on the right hand side there is a section which says "Trivia about [book name]" or go to Explore -> Quizzes and type the book's name in the Search bar on the top right-hand side. Once you have completed the book, take the quiz (which must have at least 5 questions) and post the book read along with you quiz score.
18. According to Goodreads their 3 most popular groups are Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy, The Sword and Laser and Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. Choose one of these groups (you don't have to join) and read a book off their bookshelf.
You can find these groups by clicking on the Group heading and entering the group name into the search engine.
19. Go to Your Profile. Just under your picture you will see stats like mine:
#25 best reviewers
#47 top users
#11 most followed
#14 top reviewers
#34 top librarians
Then you choose the one that you are the closest to being first.
You then choose the person that is 1 number lower that you (so I choose #10 most followed). Then you read 1 book that is on their To-Read List or Read List. To clarify, if you are number 3, read number 2's book. If you are nr 40, read nr 39's book :)
20. Go to Groups at the top of the page. Find a group about a genre you like that has a book on their bookshelf that you have on your to read shelf and read it. Tell us which group you used.
21. Select the previous book you read for the challenge. Click on the Genre (right hand side) with the least number of users. Scroll down to the Popular genre books section and select a book from this list.
22. Go to Goodreads Voice (under the Explore menu). Scroll down to Movers and Shakers. Read any book that appears on this list during the challenge. State which month it was on the list.
23. Go to Explore at the top of the screen. Scroll down until you get to "Recent Award Winners" on the right hand side and select. On the left is a list of book awards. Read a book that has won one of the awards listed. To complete the task, list the award, the category (if applicable), and the year that the book won the award.
Note: the award lists are not perfect, so you may find a book that won the award, but is not listed. To use the book, the award itself must be listed. You must provide proof the book won the award. It will either be listed on the book's profile on Goodreads or give a link to a complete list. Example the Pulitzer Prize is listed, but the 1952 non-fiction winner is not on the list. However, it is on the book page and the official list and Wikipedia, so you can read the book.
24. Go to Recommendations. On the bottom right hand side click on Ask for Recommendations. Describe what kind of book you would like to read then choose one of the books suggested.
25. Go to the Menu for our group, found at the top of the column on the right. Click on 'members', and you'll find a list of members along with the books they're currently reading. Choose one of the currently reading books and read it. To complete the task, give us the date you checked the list, and the name of the member whose book you chose.
Note: Even if people are reading multiple books at once, you're restricted to whatever shows up on this list. You must choose and read a book AFTER it appears here. So if you read a book now, and it appears on the list later, it no longer counts.
Progress: 0/25
