Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments Sorry to hear about your earache, Kyle. Hope it's better. A headache accosted me a while ago; I ignored it, and it went away. It's 2:35 in the morning, and I am questioning my sanity. I am typing in the middle of a little square answering the question, "What time is it and what are you doing?" I am getting tired at last. I do not watch TV when I use the computer; my computer is in my room, and the TV is in the living room. I watch very little TV, even though I pay a pretty good amount for cable and DVR. Since the bundle is a good deal and the Internet portion of it is free this year, I won't complain.
I am glancing at the next chapter in my novel that I marked up and need to type in the changes to and wondering when I will get to it. I have 5 such chapters on my clipboard waiting. I edited them on the bus. Now I am thinking about homework.
Do you really want to read this drivel? You didn't ask what I did all day BEFORE now. Perhaps we should start another thread about that?
Now I'm going to go on to some other threads in here, until I am tired enough to drop off to sleep.

Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments It's 11:18 p.m. and I am listening to my "wordless and foreign" playlist on my computer--the one that doesn't interfere with reading and writing. I am contemplating popcorn and whether sleep is boring (someone said in a poem that it never is), or whether it's just GOING to sleep that is. And now, thinking about my neglecting the lunges the chiropractor wants me to do and wondering why I am rebellious against some things that are good for me, and why the rebellion feels so good.
Before I got back onto Goodreads, was spending time on a dating site sending messages to strangers and semi-strangers. Am feeling like talking to someone.

message 39: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Monday, October 8, 4:54 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Autumn has surely arrived in the land, and I huddle on the floor of the living room with a little space heater blowing its feeble warmth into the air. A clock is ticking off to my right. Marking away the seconds like the beating of a heart. Tick...tick...tick...

I sit with my laptop perched upon my legs, thinking. What shall I do? How can I share my stories with the world? I complete my daily ritual of checking Amazon sales ranks, website page views, and Goodreads ratings. Status: unchanged. I have stories. How can I share them? The room is getting warmer, finally. The novels of the Great Ones stare down at me from their shelves. Dekker, Koontz, Dante, Bible, and too many others to count. The picture of my late uncle watches me, too. "Don't give up," he says. "I'm so proud of you and I know you can do it." He never saw my stories. They have only come to me in recent years.

A crucifix gazes down at me from beside my uncle. Christ in death, head bowed to one side as if he is only sleeping. I want to be with him. I want to follow him in every word and deed, but it is so hard, so hard. To his right is a box of beautiful cards they all sent me in the mail during the Bad Time. It is an irony, how the pain of that day could inspire me to write so beautifully. Pain is a teacher; a cruel one; yet without it we are weak. Without it we have no appreciation of happiness and joy.

I sit here, back leaning against the couch, and think about how different life would have been. I feel sad, even though years have come and gone. This day has no need for tears, though they hover furtively at the edge of my vision threatening to spill forth. I won't let them. Not today. There is too much to be thankful for; my life and health among them.

Monday, October 8, 5:11 pm Eastern Daylight Time. I think I will turn off one of the space heaters. And I will pray.

ugh! not dishes... you need a pool boy! he doesn't do dishes, but he will make you forget you ever had any!!

hehehehe....

message 43: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments A pool boy? What exactly is that, and how does he make you forget you ever had dishes?

J.S., your little piece of writing is so beautiful! I am curious to know what the Bad Time was and what you refer to when you say "how different life would have been."
I agree it is very true that suffering teaches us, among other things, to appreciate joy. The downs seem to be necessary for the ups. I think of this as a very Christian concept, but I'll bet it's in a lot of other religions and philosophies as well.

It's 6:30, and I'm amazed that another day is ending. I am feeling very satisfied about the work I have just done on my novel. I typed in all the changes to Chapter 17 that I had made by hand, printed it out...and right at this moment, I have realized that I somehow jumped ahead to chapters 22 without looking over 18 and 19, adding something to Chapter 22 that I can probably put in 18. (I'd skipped 20 and 21 because they were in a different character's point of view.) Good thing I didn't print 22 yet. I made all the changes to it while I was at it. I can't believe how absent-minded I am today! But the important thing is that this is getting done, and I feel much better when I've been doing it. Now I'm ducking out to add my little snippet to the proper chapter. Talk later!

I lost a child a third of the way into my pregnancy, only to learn that I had been carrying him/her dead for five weeks. (Talk about bittersweet--we'd had so many discussions about baby names and things like that, completely oblivious to the fact that our child had passed away some time before.) We've never been able to conceive again, and we still have a house full of baby things that haven't had the chance to be used. So yeah, it hurts. But that's what helps us grow!

Congrats on your writing accomplishments! It's always neat to see what other writers' methods are. I used to write my first two drafts longhand and then type the third, but now I do it all in Microsoft Word, rough drafts and all. I make sure to back up my files so I won't risk losing all of my work in the event of a technological malfunction.

It's 9:50 pm, and I'm scrunched up on the couch with my laptop sitting on top of me. The space heater overloaded the power strip and shut itself off a few minutes ago. We're having heating oil delivered two days from now. I think there's about two droplets of it left in the tank at the moment.

message 45: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinlayne) | 72 comments JS-- Oh boy! Another potential bad time? Notice I use small letters because I'm thinking (hoping) it won't be as bad as the other one. I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage and all. I type most of my writing in Word, too, but I spend so much time in front of the computer in this one chair in my room (I have a PC, no laptop), that I am relieved to have to edit while I travel on buses and such. I go to a writer's salon and write in longhand there, too, the only one that doesn't have a laptop of the group, at least as far as I know so far. In my other writing group, the drama writing, we all write in longhand, but the teacher scans our work and types it up for us to the best of her ability, emails it with her comments, and we go from there.
I'm blessed to have an apartment that stays relatively cool in the summer and warm in the winter, although it is to the point where I sometimes use the heaters, and come winter, the heating bill is pretty high.
As far as my novel goes, I looked over the chapters I thought I could put the new snippet in, and they didn't really fit there, either, so the one I have in 22 is fine. Now I feel like typing in the changes to 20 and 21, since I already did it with 22. The version I have typed is over three years old.
Now my appetite is suddenly calling, so I need to get some food in me.
