Jax's TDRC
21. Read a book that is set on an ocean vessel that is not a passenger cruise ship.
Does the entire book have to be based on a boat/ship? Or can it be that part of the book is set on it?
38. a) Read 9 debut novels by different authors (first actual novel in print by a major publisher).
b) Then read 3 novels published before the death of its author. (That author's last novel).
So 9 Debut books and then 3 books published by deceased authors, but released before they died?

I would say atleast 80% or so of it has to take place on the vessel.

I don't think it has to be released before they died. Aslong as it is their last book.

Ooh, that's a nasty tricky one!
if I could pick any time, I have a few...
Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb or her Dragon Keeper and Dragon Haven which was spent mostly on a river-raft - but those were a year or more ago...
Same with Princess at Sea by Dawn Cook...
Hmm - must go hunting for more Piratey type books! :D
Also, could I ask - What is meant by "Book 7,8 or 9 in a stand alone series?"
Something along the lines of say James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell or Kathy Reichs?

Yea it has to be book 7,8 or 9 in a stand alone series.
So like the last book in the Harry Potter series :)

Why wouldn't the book for task 24 count? If there is an autograph of the author in the book it counts :)
If you also give a total completed task number when you update, Lu can keep an eye on that and assign you a rank when you earn a new one. :)
Good luck with this challenge. I had a lot of fun doing this one.

Thanks!! added in a total number. ;D
Congrats on being the first one done!!
I've peeked through my rather large TBR list, and have discovered the colour one could be tricky! lol
Do you think the series name counts towards the title?
My Debut Novels will have to wait till next year, as I'm on a mission to first clear out my current wishlist before adding more onto it... and seeing as I currently have about 50 books sitting on my shelf begging to be read - it could be a while! LOL

Congrats on your first rank!
Thanks. I really wanted to be the first one. So I found books for all the tasks and put them on one big pile and started reading.
Series names don't count, I am sorry. You really have to use the name of the book.
Don't worry about doing something next year. This challenge has been going for over a year now and there isn't a time limit. So you may take 9 months (as I did) or 5 years to complete. Some have given up on this challenge but others are still working very hard to complete it.
Huh, only 50 books on your to read pile? Are you sure you're a book lover???? Just Kidding :P It does seem a bit little if I compare it to my own pile. I have about a 100 books just in my living room witing to be read. There are more in my bed room and more in the spare room and more in the hallway. And that is just the books I have already bought. There are more I want that I still need to buy. I have been trying to read the Moirin trilogy by Jacqueline Carey for almost a year now, but every time a book for a challenge comes in the way. So I am hoping I can use it for a challenge next year so I have an excuse. :) Once you begin doing challenges it becomes addictive.

LOL - No the fifty are just the hardcopy books I have - and as you say - some always manage to get pushed back for something else.
I also have a ton of ebooks - gotten from freebie sites (you have to love Amazon Kindle!!) plus a few friends who have shared what they think I may enjoy.
So, I have 50 in house, at least 40 on my current wishlist, and about 170 on my Goodreads to be read list... :D And due to financial constraints I can't run out and zap em all up (of course I have high hopes for the xmas period! LOL)
Jacqueline Carey is one of the ones I want to read too - but I've zoomed in on her Kushiel's Dart series.. it got a good write up by another one of my authors...
I've already read a load of books this year, but quite a few don't qualify for the challenge (pout),
And I have at least 9 Debut novels I'm waiting to get my hands on!
I'll admit,I'm terrible on the challenges - as I tend to read what I'm in the mood for - which doesn't always equal what the challenge needs...
A prime example are my series - I tend to wait till there are few out before starting, and then I get stuck in and read everything there is... so for different author requirements, I tend to fail... LOL
I only recently discovered GoodReads, and the millions of other books out there... so I'm slowly building up my library as I go...
Hold thumbs - if I win the lotto my house too will be wall to wall books!! ;D

Lol! That sounds more like you're one of us. Crazy about books and loving it!
I am still old fashioned and buying real books. An ereader is still a bit expensive for me to buy but when I get enough money I am going to buy one and go totally nuts on the free books. I love the classics and I will have the memorey of that thing filled in no time. :)
But with sites as Bookdepo I get a lot of real books for low prices so I am not complaining.
O you're in fo a treat. I loved Kushiel's Dart. It is the first book of her first trilogy named the Phèdre trilogy. Then comes the Imriel trilogy and then the Moirin trilogy. It is a series of nine books (at least it is now, who knows what is still to come) divided up into three trilogies. I loved the first two trilogies and and as said searching for a time to read the third.
I know, me too! I like to wait untill the series is complete, then buy them all in the same edition and read till I am done. I like it better that way. I don't have to wait for years for a new book to be published and I don't forget what it is all about.
But there are so many great books out there and I do recommend to at least join in the challenges. Even if you don't finish them. I have found great books and authors because of challenges. I found Jacqueline Carey because of a book I needed for the mishmash challenge. Same with Gail Carriger. 4 of my all time favorite authors I have found because of challenges.
If I win the lotto I am buying an old monastery and use the cells where munks or nuns used to live as chambers for my different collections (Star trek, dragons, buddhas, etc.) and different kinds of libraries. One for my historic novels and one for my fantasy novels, one for my paranormal novels, one for my ghost stories etc. etc. etc. With a comfy chair in every room and a nice sign on the door proclaiming what treasures are to be found inside. If only.....

Ooooh! Can I move in with you?? lol
(possible an old castle in Ireland!! :D)
If it wasn't for your amazing collection of books, I'd say - download the free kindle for PC or Adobe digital editions - its what I did...
And even though I get free e-books - I too am a sucker for traditional books... so if I really enjoyed it - I buy the physical copy (you never know when a re-read is in order!)
And I agree - isn't the Bookdepo simply the best discovery for book lovers???
Though I do have to wonder at our bookstores...
They must lose a lot of business to online stores, simply because they're much cheaper... (sorry this is one of my "soap box" issues... LOL
One of my new releases I've been waiting for is in only 1 or 2 bookstores for R305.00 however, I can get it from Bookdepo for only R200.00 - I'm going to stop before I start ranting now...

Hmm - Okay - Anybody got suggestions for Task 31?
I've looked through all my lists, and I don't have anything for the following:
Yellow
Green
Brown

I know. I too become sad when I see another bookstore doing badly. Even though I am partly to blame. I still prefer a bookstore for browsing. But nowadays I take my Blackberry with me and I have the BD site on standby to compare prices. And 9 times out of 10 I put a book back and buy it on BD. For normal paperback I can get 2 on BD for one in one of my local bookstores. I would be crazy not to buy on BD.
For task 31. I don't know what kind of books you like to read. But try searching for those colours as keywords in the title either here on Goodreads or on BD. That is what I did and when I saw something interesting with the colour I needed in the title I ordered it right away on BD. :)

@ Barbara - LOL - I do the same thing!!
Hmm... will try your suggestion for the search...
I'm not too picky - just so long as the book isn't a romance. I don't mind if there is romance within the story, just as long as its not the overall plot. :)
Though granted my main genres are Fantasy and Urban Fantasy (if you go by the number of books per genre I read.) but I do enjoy authors like Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, and Kathy Reichs too.

Dan Brown? And we were getting along so nicely and now you have ruined it. :P
I have read three books by Dan Brown: The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol and Angels and Demons. In that order. I thought The Da Vinci Code was brilliant but after reading the other two books I saw he was just following a concept and was doing the same trick over and over again. Not that there is something wrong with that. I read authors who do the same thing which I do love. But then it is in a genre where you can get away with it. I mean the cheap romance novels (he I am a girl sometimes I just want to dream about a tall handsome dark stranger). In the mystery/conspiracy genre I expect more. But maybe that genre is for you what the cheap romance novels are for me. An easy read late at night or when you want to read but not think too much.
I will think about the colours and let you know if I think of something.

Hmmm... I LOVED Angels and Demons - but have to agree with you on his Lost Symbol - It was still a good read, but definitely not as good as the others.
Plus for me it seemed to drag on a little...
He's also written Digital Fortress and Deception point which are stand alone novels.
LOL - I use my UF genre for being a typical girl.
Unfortunately I'm definitely NOT a romantic...LOL
I read some of Danielle Steele as a teenager - but soon moved onto more grizzly material...LOL
I recently tried some PNR - but found I got annoyed.
Fiction or not, I still want my characters relatively realistic...LOL (Yes, I know Cake and eating it and all that... ;D )

If you loved Angels and Demons, you might be interested in reading the discussion Lu and I had earlier this year about that book. We read it together. It is in the Book Discussion section of our group.
The problem with the books I read is that they follow the same steps. With the same people being the bad guys and the same plot twists and the same pretty female side kick and the same puzzles. And a lot of annoying cliffhangers which were absolutely the worst in The Lost Symbol with only 5 or 6 sentences before a cliffhanger and a change of POV. It makes me very apprehensive to read his other books.
Typical girl. Hmmm. Don't know what that is, but I know that I am not a prime example of that. I am very strange. :D
I used to read a lot of harlequin romance novels in my teens, because my mum bought them a lot at second hand stores and then traded them in again. So she and my sister and I had a system going. At that time I liked the historical romances the best. Last year I discovered PNR and maybe it is because I strayed into some good authors, but I love them. Every now and then I pick one of them and read the night away. One rule though: no reading them in the bath tub. Some of them are very funny (in my opinion) and once I was laughing so hard I lost my balance and almost drowned myself trying to keep my book dry.
For me it is more what I want out of a book. Sometimes that means that characters don't have to be totally realistic as long as they are able to sweep me of my feet (I am a romantic). Sometimes I want hardcore realistic people and a good story.

I suppose maybe I just managed to hit on a not so good ones...:D
Which I suppose is unfair to the good PNR authors...
LMAO! I've had one or two of those experiences!
As a result my hubby banned me from reading in the tub!! ;D
I'm waiting for him to kick me out the bed too - as he apparently does not appreciate my outbursts. :D
As for Dan Brown - Shoot - I read them so many books ago, I can't really give you a good accounting of the stand alone novels. I do recall that I really enjoyed Digital Fortress - but then I'm a science/tech nut...
(not that I'm Rocket Scientist material... LOL far from it - but I love sciency books!!)

Maybe it's just not your cup of tea. That is one of the things I love about this group. We all have favorite genres. We have a SF fan, YA, historical novels, Romance novels and a few like me who are willing to read anything as long as it is a book. And every now and then we do inspire each other to try something we wouldn't have considered before.
I don't have a hubby, but I do have two cats who get scared off me every now and then when I have to laugh all of a sudden.
I still read in the tub. At least once a week I am in there for a good 2 hours with a book and something nice to drink and maybe even a snack. That is my me time. No phone just me, my book and my cats!
Can you remember if you liked them as well or better or worse than the Robert Langdon ones?

Oh How I miss me time! LOL
With 2 daughters that's no longer an option!
Thankfully my cats are used to my craziness... Its been a while since I was accidentally clawed for startling them... :D
I Know I enjoyed Digital Fortress more...
I'd have to re-read Deception point to give you an honest answer though. :D

Yeah, 2 daughters will take up your time. Maybe when they get older you will get to have some me time again.
My cats are used to my craziness but when I am reading a PNR in the middle of the night and they are sleeping in my lap and I have to laugh at 3 a.m. I scare them. They will run away and then after a couple of minutes come back and observe me from a couple of meters distance as if they are checking to see that I haven't lost all my marbles and to see if they can safely return to my lap.
Maybe I'll give Digital Fortress a shot after all the other books I still want/need to read. :)

:D - You gotta love the hoity looks they give!
two of mine, Loki (a Siamese cross), and Myrrin (domestic short hair) have that perfected! LOL
One of my other babies, Talon, will not get off no matter what - you just need to beware you don't move too much, otherwise he digs in all his claws to remain in place... lol

No animal, man included, is better in giving the hoity looks.
Nowadays I have just the two and I have a fighting chance. When I still had three cats I had no chance in beating them. Especially in bed. They gave me just enough time to lay down and find my spot and then they came. Megan (unfortunately she isn't with us anymore) was always the first. She would spoon with me. I would be on my left side reading my book and she would come and lay down with her back against my breast and her head on my arm and fall asleep. Then Cicero would come and she would crawl under the covers with me and first warm her cold paws on my back and then curl up against my back and fall asleep. And lastly it was Bastet's turn. She would curl up on my right hip and fall asleep there. If I moved too much or laugh too loudly Megan would raise her head and stare at me. With two daughters I have no doubt you kno which stare I am talking about and you probably use it at times.
It is a good thing I am still single because if I ever found a man he would have to fight my cats for a place in my bed. :) And I am not too sure on whose side I would be.
All my cats are/were European shorthairs becasuse they are not pure breeds but they are mixed with something else. Megan was a British Shorthair, Cicero has an Oriental longhair streak in her which gives her an amazing collar. I mean it looks like she is wearing some sort of shawl. It is difficult to see in photo's, but it looks great. And Bastet is part Bombay. Photo's of my cats can be found on my profile page if you're interested. My profile photos is Cicero.
I love the names of your cats. Especially Loki. A perfect name for a cat!

LOL - Thanks! And it suits her perfectly!
She was such a mischievous kitten!
She does what your Megan used to do - or if I'm trying to read, will try and sit between my face and my book! lol
As for a man - My hubby tried that when we first moved in together - no cats on the bed - I told him my cats were there first, so he could deal with it, or sleep on the couch... LOL - He dealt with it - Though he always manages to scoot them over to my side of the bed, and with 5 cats (4 of which sleep with me) I don't get a whole lot of space... :D
Though Akarrin is also happy to curl up on my hubby's slippers...
Arakasi is happy to sleep by my feet, and Myrrin sleeps on my eldest daughter...
The plus side is that both of my daughters have outgrown sleeping in our bed (Thank Heavens!)
One hubby, 2 kids and 4 cats really doesn't add up to a good night's rest! ;D

Trust me even with 2 cats and just me in my big bed I don't get much space. Cicero has a way (especially if it is warm) of sleeping with her front paws on the edge of the bed, her back paws in my back pushing me out of the bed and me sleeping on my side on the edge of the bed almost falling out. And when I try to do something about it she looks so cute I just don't want to disturb her.
I bet you're just like me. I always complain about the lack of space in my bed, but when I am on holiday and I am all alone in my bed in my hotel room enjoying lots of space, I wake up in the middle of the night and call my cats (who are still at home) because I feel lonely.
I miss having more cats. The most I have had is 3, but I am living in the same house as my parents and they used to have 3 too. And all 3 of them used to walk all over the house and interact. They knew they belonged to different people and had different rooms to call home but they interacted and visited and stuff. All that is left of them is the 2 that I have now.

@Barbara: I preferred both of Dan Brown's stand alone novels to his series.
@Jax: Welcome to the challenge. I also started it recently. Glad to see I can use Micro!

But one book can be used for multiple challenges! Check if anything fits with another challenge you are taking part in!
LOL - Sadly no...
none fit in the Mish Mash Challenge...and I completed the Paint by numbers...
See. e.g Graveyard Book was nominated for an award, and it referenced the CLassic Robinson Crusoe..
And I've read Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin, which was inspired by Poe's story...so now I have to decide which task I want to use some of the books for.. LOL

Make notes of the multiple possibilities and just put it somewhere. If you later read a book that can only be used fot the award task you can always switch. Switching books around is allowed and is something that is done quite regularly.

Hmm, I've had to revise my tasks to be completed, as I just discovered that that Magnificent Devices series, is in fact not a trilogy!
(though I'm happy with the news, as it means there will be more story!! :)
So, I have completed Task 16:
Where they mention wanting to Travel to South Africa.

No, that is not allowed. Sorry!
Is there nothing with that colour you want to read? Nothing that is even remotely interesting?

Sadly... Nope.
I even used GR to see about ideas...and NADA.
I have Andrew Lang's Brown Fairy Book, but after suffering through the Yellow Fairy Book, I'm not all that geared up to try it. (Sad, but True).
I have Authors and Series with Brown, but nothing with Brown in the actual Title.
I'll keep hunting then... hopefully something will turn up - or I'll slug my way through Lang... :)

It's the only one I found besides Lang's fairy books, and from what you just said, I'm glad I didn't try it
@ Liezel...
In Lang's Defense, It could just be me...
I'm clearly NOT a romantic, and after about the 5th Beautiful Princess meets Prince Charming defeats evil witch and Lives HEA I'd had enough....
It was however interesting how many cultures worldwide have very similar folklore... I could just have done without the "repeats".
I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy of your suggestion... Never read Agatha Christie before. Thanks! ;D

If that book doesn't work out, let us know. We may be able to come up with other suggestions. And it is also always a good idea to check out what others have read for that task. Doing that has given me some great ideas and books in other challenges!
