Leave your thoughts about Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume as you are reading, just make sure you say what chapter & page you are on so that there are no spoilers. This way we can discuss as we read without ruining the ending for anyone. :)

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! She totally ends up getting her period. ;-)

Kai Hunter | 192 comments Ok, I know this is TMI, but I am recovery from surgery for "female problems" and the thought of reading about girls so excited to get their periods just doesn't appeal to me right now. I did however read this book way back when I was so excited about getting my period.

@Karen sending you prayers and thoughts of a speedy recovery.

Decided to join in on the re-read of Margaret because Phantom Tollbooth is so damn boring.

Margaret just got her first bra. I remember that mortifying experience. LOL!
This is what I love about Judy Blume...although her references may be dated, her worlds and circumstances are as relevant today as they were so long ago.

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Yes, Karen - speedy recovery!!

I remember being mortified to discuss this stuff with my friends when we were younger and, even when I read this as a kid, I thought, "Man, these girls LOVE to talk about their periods and bras way more than anyone I know!" Anyone remember the old version where they used belted pads?

Lilybeth (_li_) | 335 comments Mod
@Mia - I think I did read the belted pads version. I never understood how that worked. Poor girls that had to deal with that.

Abby (atanori512) | 86 comments Girl we were so broke the first month I had my period I had to do the belted pad... Horrible!!!

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Okay, TMI warning: By the way, I know that when Gretchen got her period, she mentioned a little bit of cramping "not bad" and "lower down and across the back." My mom wasn't a huge cramper, either. BOY was I surprised when I turned out to be someone who had monster cramps - owwwww! Advil became my best friend.

Kai Hunter | 192 comments Ok, TMI warning too: Before I went to the hospital for my surgery last month a nurse called and told me that it would be in my best interest to bring my own pads for after the surgery as the pads the hospital uses still require belts and are very difficult to wear. I didn't realize you could still buy pads that used belts. Or maybe the hospital just bought 50,000 cases of them back in the 1970s.

TMI warning #3 - never had much cramping until I hit my 30s. I miss one day of work a month...like clockwork.

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Okay - here's a new challenge: Everyone needs to give a TMI story about menstruation! (Oh, wait, we seem to be doing that already.)

Kai Hunter | 192 comments Oh Li, I'm sorry!
