Katie (katiehodgkinson) So what's everyone's thought on e-readers?

A couple of years ago my uncle got a kindle and I absolutely slated him for getting it as I couldn't get my head around it. I've always loved having a physical book in my hands. Last year, however, I kept seeing them advertised on amazon and I had a really weird urge to get one so I went and bought one on a whim and it was most definitely one of the best decisions I have made and got me back into reading.

I actually read through my books faster on the kindle which is a little weird, but it's just so lightweight and easy to carry around and you can get so many good deals on books. I still love physical copies of books, however, won't switch me over completely anytime soon :)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments I have a Kindle but I'd much rather read a physical book. I haven't read many books on there, but maybe I'll start reading more on it. I do agree with you, Katie, because you do get great deals on books and it's very, very lightweight but I would much rather prefer the physical copies of the books I read! Great discussion, Katie!

Like the Uglies series for example, I've read the first book on my kindle and now I don't know whether to buy the whole set in books or not - only dilemna for me really (first world problems :p) I'd suggest some of the free books for kindle to start off with, some of them are surprisingly good if I'm honest!

(I wasn't sure if I could start a topic, but yay :D)

I have a Kindle too, it was given to me, but I've literally never even turned it on.

but I've been noticing a lot of links lately saying certain ebooks are free on amazon....I may need to learn how to turn this thing on this weekend and see what it's all about.

thank you Katie, you're helping me make that decision :D

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I don't have a Kindle, but I read on my iPad most of the time. It doesn't matter much to me what form the book is in. It is still a book, right? I love physical books and I also love ebooks.

Reading on a device is more convenient for me since I usually read more than one book, so it's hard to carry 2 or 3 paperbacks around. But physical books look nice on bookshelves :)

And Katie, it's ok to start a new topic. In fact, I always encourage everyone to start one :)

message 6: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I'd love to have a Kindle Fire too. It looks so beautiful.

message 7: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments I got a NOOK for Christmas this past year from my hubby and I LOVE it! I've gotten many free books, but I've also spent a LOT on books. I like that I can open/close books and compare without having to go grab a bunch of books; however, I still LOVE the feel of a hard copy book in my hands. Right now I am reading Size 12 and Ready to Rock (Heather Wells, #4) by Meg Cabot and I love how it feels. I enjoy the feel and size of some books more than others.

One really good benefit of the e-book is that I can change the size of the font. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be and that helps a lot. I also love that I can read in the car or at night at a football game or camping or whatever. It's very convenient.

message 8: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments @Elizabeth ~ :D Either way you find a use for it :)

@Vicki ~ Yes I agree. E-books are more convenient. I love reading at night, sometimes until 1 in the morning, so reading e-books allows me to switch to night mode. It's easier and lighter than physical books :)

I love browsing through my collection too :) Love the pretty covers :D

message 10: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Sarajayne: I heard about borrowing books from the library on an e-reader. How does that work?

Elizabeth: Is the Kindle Fire good, looks a little too flashy for my likings but I'd love to hear what you think :)

message 11: by Jacquelyn, thebrunettebooknerd (new)

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments Not that you were asking me, Katie, but my mom has a Kindle Fire and she absolutely loves it! She reads on it a ton! Were you thinking of getting it?

message 12: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Oh I wasn't planning on getting one, I've got the most basic kindle without the keyboard (the cheapest one as well :p). It's enough for me as I personally don't think it needs touch screen or a keyboard. It's great as the simplest version in my opinion. I just wanted to know what it was like and if it added any advantages to it really? Just curious.

message 13: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments There are apps for kindle fire, I think. It can be used to play games and something like that. Not just reading.

message 14: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Just....what? Why does a kindle need apps? :s it's beyond me!

I've just done a little bit of research around my library and found I can do this. Oh my gosh, so excited :D I didn't realise this was possible till yesterday!!

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a nook touch but I rarely ever read on it because I am a huge on checking books out from the library. But if I do buy books I do get them on my nook which means that I have a ton of books on my nook that I have yet to read. I don't really regret getting the nook though because I don't have room to store books and I am trying to get rid of the books that I won't read again or buy them in digital so that my books don't take up so much of my limited space.

Yes, e-readers definitely have the advantage of storing lots of books in one little package. I'm running out of space myself with books/games/dvds taking up all my storage space!

message 18: by Sabriena (new)

Sabriena I have a Kindle and I absolutely LOVE it. I've been reading a whole lot more with it but I still want to get physical books of the ones I read and really really like.

Jacquelyn (jacquelynreads) | 18790 comments What kind of Kindle do you have, Sabriena?

message 20: by Merryn (new)

Merryn (memerrynwhoyou) | 16 comments My dad has a kindle and I just don't know all the ways to get stuff etc. It shall never replace books for me!

message 21: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 15 comments i love my kindle but i dont think it will ever really replace real books (and the smell of them!) in the way that you can hold a book hug it, cry over it with tears dropping on the page and being able to turn real pages and hear the rustling of the paper. i still LOVE my kindle all those things said!!

message 22: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Sabriena & Kathryn: I'm exactly the same :) still love mine too

Merryn: It's really easy to get books, you just link your kindle up to your wifi and amazon account and just buy it like you buy anything on amazon but it goes straight to your kindle instead!

message 23: by Inger (new)

Inger | 241 comments I ♥ my Kindle :D
Of course it will never be able to replace the "real" books and that's why I just use it to read all my YA books or non-serial books... all my fantasy series etc have to be in my bookshelf in physical form ^^

message 24: by Sabriena (new)

Sabriena Jacquelyn wrote: "What kind of Kindle do you have, Sabriena?"

I have a Kindle 4. I was a little annoyed to see they came out with the paperwhite because I wanted a backlit e-reader with an awesome battery life but still, love my kindle even if at night I have to use my light ;)

message 25: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I love my Kindle Fire. At first I don't want my aunt to get me one because I prefer the paperbacks.. but my Kindle is a convinient too because I don't need a night light and not bulky.

Thank you! My dad isn't too good with technology so I will have to show him how to actually buy books. He normally just downloads all the free books.

Oh I try and find good interesting free books, I need to find more websites that list the free ones. The free classic books aren't really my style really.

message 28: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments I love classic :) especially, when they are free description
Charles Dickens is my favorite author from the good ol' day

message 29: by Sapir (new)

Sapir | 138 comments I have a Kindle for a year (i think?) and I LOVE it. I carry it almost everywhere and I've read hundreds of books on it. I live out of the US so it's a bit hard to get English books here, and I don't feel like waiting a month for an actual book to arrive from Amazon.
The kindle is very light and I can carry it easily everywhere instead of carrying 2-3 paperbacks.
I agree that actual books look better on the shelf, so I do by them whenever I can, but I mostly read eBooks.

message 30: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiehodgkinson) Gisbelle: Maybe it's because I've only tried one classic and hated it - I tried Pride and Prejudice cause everyone kept going on about how great it was. I got bored.

Sapir: That's great, especially if it helps you to read more :) so much easier when it does come to travelling.

message 31: by Jalyn (new)

Jalyn (jalynnie) I was anti ebooks for a long time. I love to hold a book and the book smell is one of my favorite scents, but my husband bought me a kindle for my birthday last January and it's one of my favorite presents ever. I've found so many books for $0.99 to $2.99 and they a lot of them are pretty good (check out M. Leighton's Blood Like Poison series and Madly series!) and I borrow a lot from my elibrary too. Being able to borrow from the library instantly and from my own home is awesome! I don't have to worry as much about spending money on a book that I might not like. If I found it for free on my Kindle and love it then I just buy the actual book form of it because I still love "real" books too <3

That's exactly how I feel about my Nook Color. I got it last Christmas and it was one of the best presents I've ever received. I do love my book collection however, so when I find a book or a series of books I like, I'll buy it for my collection. Doing it that way also helps me keep a handle on how large my collection gets. Now, if I buy a hard copy, its going to be a favorite book worth having.

Jojobean | 553 comments I do have a kindle but I only got it for books that are only e-books and haven't or are never going to be out in a physical book. I don't really like the idea of ereaders; I guess I'm old fashioned.. I like to have a book in my hands. Also I can't read on an ereader for long b.c it makes me dizzy

I used to feel the same way. Ebooks were not what I normally read before. But now since the space I usually put the books is getting smaller, I switch to ebooks and I like it a lot now.

message 37: by Gisbelle (new)

Gisbelle | 25787 comments Well, in case some of you want to read ebooks using your PC or Mac, there is a program that allows you to do so. It reads epub format. Besides, it's totally free :)

Ally (arhart) I have a question for you all. Do any of you have iPads? I'm getting one for the holidays I believe (for college next year). I already have a kindle, but I was thinking of giving it to my mom once I got my iPad.

Basically, have any of you have read on the iPad that also have (or had) a nook/kindle/e-ink reader? Because if it's not as good as a kindle I'll probably just keep both honestly...

message 45: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 31156 comments Don't be! Ask for a light-up one for Christmas! Lol
