I know from reading about RA Salvatore, he came up with the character Drizzt Do'Urden on the spur of the moment while under pressure from his editor. On a recent reddit chat he said he based Menzoberranzan on Mario Puzo's "The Godfather."
I think the best idea would be to watch his Facebook page for the next reddit chat and ask your question there.
