Hi - we have been away just for one day and night, visiting my sister and her family who had hired a cottage in Devon, not long got back.

I do have some orange wool, Kay, but I won't be able to get to a post office for the next week - we're busy for the next few days, and then are off to Bristol again for work. If you can wait a week I could post you some at the end of next week - Thurs or Fri.

Today's free craft book (just one)
Crochet

It was lovely thanks, Kay, was able to spend lots of time with my cute two-year old nephew.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments I have a wee ball of bright orange wool Kay,I think I used it for chicken beaks at one time:@). If you PM me your details I will get it in first post tomorrow. I also have a skein of thick cotton that would be ok to knot with.

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Spent the morning making bunting to celebrate brother and sister-in-laws ruby wedding. Chose a pastel theme rather than red so she can use it again. Will post a photo soon!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Darn it, I didn't get chance to look on the 21st so I missed the mini top hats - they looked really cute too. Don't know what I'd do with them or if I'd ever make one, but you never know.

message 968: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments I have learnt a new crochet stitch, I had never heard of till now. A wrap stitch. You work two trebles and wrap the wool over the hook work across both trebles and back to finished the third treble. It looks good. I am so pleased. It is so easy, I was surprised. I had never done a drop stitch till now either. I just love that new book!!

message 969: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Why don't we have great patterns like the usa. We aren't daft so what happened. Did we all just decide
not to progress or something? Everyone decided crochet is old fashioned, full stop.

message 970: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds good, Pat - I've been excited by all the new patterns and stitches that I've found out about online. I find pinterest great for organising them all. I didn't realise that there was so much available online! Most of it is american but I've got used to the US terminology now so I can work using either type of pattern now.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments What is your book called Pat?

message 974: by Pat () (last edited Jun 24, 2013 02:08PM) (new)

Pat () | -245 comments The Complete Book of Crochet Stitch Designs by Linda P Schapper it's an american book, but so very clear with diagrams and written patterns. An excellent all round book. cost £8.96 and worth every penny.
Will go and get a link and edit when I have it.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Book...

Indeed Karen I followed you on pinterest and have a 'page' there for some patterns.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Thanks Pat, I've got one but that looks interesting - i"ve saved it on my Wish list and I might get that when I come home again. I think I prefer books to Kindle for patterns and cookbooks, its much better when you can see a clear photo.

message 976: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Yes Lynne, did I say I am well pleased with it. I read the reviews last night and someone only gave 3 stars because all the samples in the photos were the same coloured wool. How petty of them. I have now taken the plunge and bought her book of 300 squares also. That should set me up fine.

I have the Handbook of crochet stitches also, but some of the charts are in pale orange ink and quite small not so good to see them.

I am really into my crochet at the moment, am making scarves, cat blankets and baby blankets for the local animal charity shop. Reading has taken a back seat, can you believe it?

message 977: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Sorry Kay, I've not posted the wool yet. I have it with me in work today though so will head over to the post office at lunchtime.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Pat, I can knit and read, but I can't crochet and read, although the Kindle makes it easier.

message 984: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments I love crocheting but when I tried to get back into it, it was doing dire things to my wrist so I've packed it in again for the mo. Such a shame. I think it looks really pretty. Used to love doing those shell patterns.

Pat () | -245 comments Lynne (Tigger's Mum) wrote: "Pat, I can knit and read, but I can't crochet and read, although the Kindle makes it easier."

Nope, couldn't read and knit but I could knit and watch tv. then my hands complained at the weight of the knitting. So that put paid to that.

Karen, I know what you mean, I have to pace myself and it is OK ortherwise I get the same problem as you.

Just back from the doctors My six month check up. Everything is fine. I can plan my next six months mayham now. Dentist tomorrow though. Help need a replacement to go in my place, any takers? But first Bella is up the vet's again for yet another blood test.
Gerry has the stitch taken out of the bridge of his nose too. I do so hope it doesn't bleed again.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments For anyone with sore hands who knit have you considered circular needles. I've knitted for about 50 years and had never ever used them. If I ever did anything circular I used 4 double ended pins but when I did 2 arans last year the woolshop owner suggested them as I mentioned I don't like long needles I prefer to cram it all on 10" rather than use 12"but I was knitting a 44" chest size and there were too many stitches to use 10"s I was a bit surprised and sceptical but it did lighten the work. I used them like conventional knitting and turned the work after each row. That idea did help.

message 987: by Pat () (last edited Jun 26, 2013 10:23AM) (new)

Pat () | -245 comments I haven't used circular needles for ages and ages, well many years ago and then only for a fairisle jumper. Never used it since, perhaps I could try again. Right off to the vets now.

We've just got back from working in Bristol again - dismantling decommissioned mobile phone cabinets. Stayed over night but as we wanted to travel light this time I didn't take my lap top so wasn't able to check the freebies yesterday for the craft books. Here are today's though.

Glad you managed to get hold of your orange wool, Kay!

I can't read and crochet either, Pat - but I sometimes get my kindle to read to me while I crochet. I mainly just listen to the radio, or listen to the TV or a dvd. I laughed once when I saw something on facebook about "watching" an entire series without knowing what any of the characters look like because of crocheting at the same time - that's me, listening to the tv instead of watching the tv!

message 990: by Pat () (new)

Pat () | -245 comments Haha, that's the way to do it Karen.
The second book arrived this morning. It's OK, again with very clear charts and written instructions but the squares didn't grab me like the first book did. Still quite a few I might use but not 'a Oh, I must do that one', pity really. Never mind time will tell.
