Nicola | 649 comments November Monthly Challenge

This is the Suggestions Thread. The participants thread is HERE

1. “N" is for November: Read a book that starts with 'N' or a book whose author's first or last name starts with 'N'.

2. Happy Birthday!: Read a book from an November birthday celebrant's GR bookshelf whose name/nickname starts with the same letter as yours. If no one has the same letter, choose someone with the closest letter to yours alphabetically. RRRC November Birthday List

3. Geography: Read a book whose author, character or setting is from Missouri. OR, Missouri is known for its farming industry (108,000 farms, the second-largest number in any state after Texas.) – so, read a book involving the farming industry, set on a farm/ranch, or about a cowboy.

4. Plan Your Epitaph Day (November 1) Read a book where a character’s death plays a significant role in the story, even if that character does not. (Murder Mystery anyone?)

5. Book Lover’s Day (November 3): This is a holiday made for the members of this group! Read a book. Simple, straight forward – you love books so pick one that interests you!

6. Forget Me Not Day (November 10): Read a book that has been on your to-read list for a long time.

7. Young Readers Day (November 13): Read a Young Adult book (it must be classified as YA on the GoodReads page)

8. Shopping Reminder Day (November 26): Naturally we are being reminded to do our Christmas shopping! To help you get into the spirit, read a book with a Christmas theme (perhaps you can pick one up while out shopping…)

9. Stay At Home Because You're Well Day (November 30): I LOVE this idea. What better way to spend a day at home, but curled up with a good book? Read a book that a friend has recommended to you. Tell us who recommended it (yes, it can come from the GoodReads Recommends List)

10. Reader's Choice:

Challenge Duration: November 1 to November 30, 2012

You can choose 3, 5, 8 or all 10 categories depending on your reading speed, books availability and/or time commitment.

When posting your challenge progress, please make sure to put the date/s when you finished your book/s.

Please repost your progress as it helps when updating.

Happy Reading!

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Nicola,

Great categories! I have a question...

For-
8. Shopping Reminder Day (November 26): Naturally we are being reminded to do our Christmas shopping! To help you get into the spirit, read a book with a Christmas theme (perhaps you can pick one up while out shopping…)

Can we use Chanukah or any other 'Christmas time' holiday? Kwanzaa?

message 8: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 649 comments Absolutely! I should not have limited to my tradition - and apologize for that.

message 9: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments No problem, I have one on my shelf with Chanukah as the theme that I might use so I just wanted to make sure it was ok :)

message 10: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I actually have 4 sitting on my tbr that would fit the holiday theme, just can't decide which to use!

Lynne (lovetoreadgal) | 1182 comments I just noticed that the newest book in the Play-by-Play series by Jaci Burton, Playing to Win, is set in St. Louis, MO. So you can meet the challenge and contemplate that great cover.
Playing to Win (Play by Play, #4) by Jaci Burton

Margarita | 6 comments Is there a page requirement? Sorry new to the group so wanted to make sure before I started picking. :)

message 13: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31635 comments Generally there is no page requirement, unless it is specified in the category description or rule. And rereads and audiobooks are fine too. As well as using the book in multiple challenges - we all love multitasking like that!

Nicola | 649 comments True we all love to use books in multiple challenges MountainKat - but I've just realized I cannot remember all of the challenges I have signed up for!

message 15: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Nicola, you need either a member thread or a private group to sort yourself out. LOL.

~KarenH~ | 11359 comments Nicola - go to the Members Reading Lists area, and you can create a thread to keep track of your challenges. I'd be totally lost without mine!

message 25: by Colette (new)

Colette This is my first challenge and I need some clarification on #3. Is it correct to state, I can choose any book involving the farming industry, set on a farm/ranch, or about a cowboy irregardless of whether the author is from or setting is Missouri?

message 26: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Colette!

Welcome and have fun with your first challenge! So glad to have you join us :)

Yes, if you choose a book based on farm/ ranch, cowboy, etc. the author does not have to be from Missouri and the setting doesn't need to be Missouri either.

D.G., I ended up starting Easy today, since it was in the beta hero shelf in the hearts and tears game and I could use it for the monthly. LOL. Just wanted to tell you, I'm not halfway into it but so far so good. Its keeping me interested and maybe I should pay more attention to books that are YA/New adult...:)

message 30: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31635 comments I have a question for 4. Plan Your Epitaph Day, I have a book where the death of close friends/teammates of the hero is a large factor in his life during the book. I figured that would be OK, but at the end it turns out they weren't really dead - would that still work?

If that makes any sense...? Trying to ask without giving too much away, don't even want to say the name of the book.

I am assuming that the presumed death leads the activities in the story? I think that is okay - because the storyline would be completely different without the "death" of this character. Go ahead.

I just finished Lumberjack In Love Lumberjack In Love by Penny Watson and adored it. Short but so sweet. It takes place in the Vermont mountains and has a hunky lumberjack.

And it's free right now on Amazon!
