My book, Cedric of RoseThorn, Book One. is more of a medieval adventure story with some paranormal elements. It is the story of one Lord' s attempt to save his people and his castle in face of overwhelming odds.

Troy Jackson | 43 comments My novel, The Elementals, is best described as Historical Fantasy. It takes place in ancient China, some 2200 years ago. I take actual events that occurred back then add a supernatural twist.

Shane O'Neill (shanekponeill) | 21 comments Hi everyone. I'm Shane KP O'Neill and my books are The Dracula Chronicles. They are categorised as Gothic horror on retail sites, but they are also sprawling historical adventures on a journey through the ages.

Bound By Blood - Volume 1 & 2 are out now, and Birth Of The Monster, which is a prequel of those two volumes. I'm sorry I don't know how to get the book covers to appear in this thread. These books chronicle the period from 1476-1612.

The Dracula Chronicles is the brilliant and terrifying new concept of Dracula. It is an epic journey through the ages where the forces of Light and Darkness struggle for supremacy until the Second Great War, as foretold in the Book of Revelations. This bitter feud began after the creation of mankind. Lucifer’s jealousy leads to the First Great War of the angels. Hundreds of thousands of years on the feud simmers beneath the surface. It plots the course of history as we know it today. Both sides manipulate the major players through the centuries to seek an advantage over the other. On a cold night in December 1431 in Sighisoara an old gypsy woman delivers a prophecy to the great Vlad Dracul. She tells him he is about to sire two sons, one an angel and the other a devil. He returns to his fortress just as his wife bears him a son, whom he names Vlad. In the very same moment across the country on the border between Transylvania and Hungary a gypsy girl gives birth to another son, Andrei. The die is cast. The twin souls are born. The young Vlad Dracula becomes the instrument of the forces of Darkness. To balance this, the baby Andrei is blessed by the angels and bestowed with awesome powers. These chronicles are their story.

As his moment of death looms Dracula suffers the ultimate betrayal. The champion of the Catholic faith in Eastern Europe realises it is Lucifer who is coming to claim him. However, Lucifer does not want his soul. Instead he bites into Dracula's neck and then offers his own blood to drink. Dracula suffers his mortal death. But he re-awakens. Immortalised with Lucifer's blood coursing through his veins, the two are bound by blood for eternity. But Lucifer has groomed him for this day. He lays out the task before him. Dracula is to destroy the institution of that which he has championed for so long. By bringing down the Catholic Church he can undo the Crucifixion and turn man against God once more. If he succeeds then Lucifer will ascend again to Heaven and signal the end for all mankind.

Jennifer Lafferty | 117 comments Check out this new review of "Knight of the Purple Ribbon" by Marianne Petrino:

A look at life in the early North Carolina, this book is based on solid research. The story of Baron Christoph de Graffenried and his struggles with the founding of New Bern with Swiss German settlers is all the more intriguing because the hero is the author's illustrious ancestor. The formal writing style is perfectly suited to the time period portrayed. The Baron was a true Renaissance man, being ahead of his time in his dealing with the Native Americans and the ordinary folks who set out for the New World. But he is not perfect, having had a hand in a romantic scandal. The colonists have setbacks that those of us living today would find hard to survive. A clash of heroes and villains is inevitable. The book is a reminder of the courage of those who came before us. A must read for those interested in the local history tales of North Carolina.

Ben Sharpton (bensharpton) | 3 comments Remember the good times and the bad, the promise of a new generation in a time of transition, the love, the hate and the wonder of a decade like none other in 7 SANCTUARIES.

The radical era of the 1960s is told in a series of seven vignettes about life in a small town in the South. The first is from a loving mother's perspective. Another approaches the time from the view of the "Radical Preach." A third is from a local basketball coach. They all swirl together in the final vignette in a night of possibility and sacrifice.

Reviews:

“Careful character development, a socially important plot, and insightful writing combine to make 7 Sanctuaries by Ben A. Sharpton a masterpiece of brilliant writing.”
- Richard R. Blake, Reader Views

“The characters are all interwoven, but not directly part of each other’s lives. Sharpton ties them together very loosely, just as people in any small town are tied together without living in each other’s back yards. Some, like the minister and the two sons of the traditional family, interact more than others; again, an authentic depiction of life in any small town. Although this is a fiction work, it is written as if it were a true story, and is completely believable as the truth.“
- Janie Sullivan, Center for Writing Excellence

Sandra Saidak (sandywriter) | 7 comments And here's my offering:

Drawing on Irish folklore, THE SEAL QUEEN tells the story of Briah, an escaped slave who finds sanctuary, for herself and her unborn child, on an enchanted beach. There her life is filled with contented solitude, the joys of motherhood, and even the possibility of love with a merman whose song haunts her dreams.

But Briah’s magical world is shaken when she discovers that her son is the long-awaited savior and future king of the roane (shape-shifting seals, and gentler cousins of the selkies). Briah wants to help these magical creatures, but is unwilling to see her son become a pawn in their deadly schemes. When faced with the choice between sending her child to battle his diabolical father or allowing the roane to be exterminated, Briah insists on finding a third option.

D.r. Stokes | 3 comments Hi all, (just realised that I ought to have pasted here...doh!)

Here's the blurb about my new book "The Cinder Crown". It is fantasy but based on historical events in 18/19th century Prussia (well sort of). I hope you enjoy.

Hohenzern is a kingdom at the peak of its power, respected by its neighbours, and feared by its enemies, rich, stable and ruled over by a powerful aristocracy who live lives of fabulous luxury. It is into this decadent world that the young Cordelia is thrust. Rescued from her abusive step-mother and sisters by the Countess Engless, a mysterious spymaster claiming to be her Godmother, feted and loved by the people as their beloved Cinderella, and married to the handsome and brave Crown-prince Dietrich, it seems that Cordelia can finally put the nightmare of her former life behind her.

And yet not is all as it seems in mighty Hohenzern. Beneath the surface the country is a tinderbox of discontent and resentment, teetering on the edge of bloody revolution. While the poorest people struggle simply to survive under the oppression of the privileged classes, others question the divine right of the aristocracy to rule over them, plotting their violent downfall. Even amongst the royal family powerful forces scheme to overthrow the paranoid and repressive rule of the king, with all sides viewing the beloved Cinderella as an obstacle to their success, an obstacle that needs to be removed.

The Cinder Crown weaves together the story of a damaged girl propelled from obscurity into fame, wealth and terrible danger, and also the lives and passions of those who seek her downfall. A unique blend of historically-influenced fiction, political thriller, and classic romantic fairytale, this story takes the reader through a world rich in drama and action; a world where each character is both a hero and villain, driven by their principles, dreams, and loves; a journey to the darker side of happily-ever-after.

William Stacey (williamstacey) Hello gang,
okay, shameless self promotion here.

I am an independent author who has just published his first novel, Black Monastery. It's a 75,000 word historical fantasy with Vikings, demons, and ghosts. I've always loved Robert E. Howard, so I've done my best to write a swords and sorcery novel set in Medieval France. I had a blast writing it, and I hope people enjoy it.

Full disclosure: it's a bit violent and naughty (but just a bit).

Here's the blurb:

Beware the foe behind the strange threshold.

In 799 A.D. Viking warband leader Asgrim Wood-Nose sails his prized longship Sea Eel south along the coast of Frankia to raid the island of Noirmoutier—the Black Monastery.

Banned from his homeland following a night of rage-filled murder, Asgrim has been declared outlaw. Unless he can raise a princely blood debt, he will never see Denmark again. When a Saracen merchant brags of a great treasure hidden deep within the monastery, Asgrim realizes fate is offering him a chance to go home again. But Asgrim has led his men into a trap: somehow, the monks of the Black Monastery have released a dark supernatural force, an eastern demon that wears the skins of its victims. Hunted by this monstrous evil and tormented by the ghosts of those he has slain, Asgrim’s only ally becomes another lonely soul, a Frankish woman abandoned by her people under suspicion of witchcraft.

The Viking north clashes with the supernatural east in an epic historical fantasy tale of heroism and redemption in the face of unimaginable horror.

Voted 'Outstanding in Genre' by Red Adept Select.

John Burton | 21 comments Hi all,

If you are interested in novels about criminal trials and novels about Ancient Rome, I've just published "Parricide", the first volume of "the Murder Trials of Cicero".

The Novel is based on the published speech that Marcus Tullius Cicero, the great Roman Orator, gave in his first ever murder trial.
Sextus Roscius the younger is charged with killing his own father and Cicero is instructed to defend him. The novel covers the dramatic background to the trial as well as the political dimension and continues through to the verdict and the surprising aftermath.

best wishes all,

John

September 1, 1939, the unimaginable happened. WAR! Germany invaded Poland from the west. Two weeks later, Russia honored her agreement with Germany and invaded from the east.

The plan of relocation was going to awaken an opponent that only resided in the "occupier’s" darkest nightmares.

Mary Woldering | 87 comments Children of Stone: Voices in Crystal
And Hello...I keep thinking I've posted a blurb on this board, but I don't see it so here it goes again. I'm Mary, a first time self-published author/retiree/granny although I've been writing all my life. I have a 5 book series "Children of Stone" that has been in varying stages of readiness for about 42 years, but I stopped to do school & family. Thus far I am selling little and getting followed by empty promises but I guess it's a start...

The Saga goes like this:

When Marai, a shepherd living at the foot of Mt. Sinai in the third Millennium BC sings to his goddess one night... He sees a falling star. Tracking it, he sees a strange vessel containing crystalline entities resembling earthly Stones & gems: The Children of Stone. The Children delight in this simple shepherd and his songs of love. They ask him to host their intelligence; to bring them to the sages and priests who have spent their lives seeking the wisdom of the stars. When he agrees, he is transformed into a godlike being. Still a passionate shepherd at heart, Marai gathers others, like lambs to his fold. His journey to the wise men of Kemet won't be easy. Things hidden that wait in darkness are always there.

Voices in Crystal (Book 1)begins Marai's journey toward wisdom. It's a blend of history, ancient literature, mythology, classic archetypes, and personal inspiration...a speculative and emotional journey through the ancient world and worlds beyond. Marai and his companions, through the help of the Children of Stone, find themselves walking into (and becoming part of) ancient legends...

A.L. Waddington (alwaddington) | 31 comments Hello everyone, my name is A. L. Waddington and I write YA Fiction under the cross genre of romance/science fiction/time travel. The first book in my EVE series, Essence Essence Essence (The EVE Series, Book 1) by A.L. Waddington (The EVE Series, Book 1) was rereleased on January 16, 2014 by my new publisher, Booktrope. The second installment, Enlightened will be released in April, 2014.

About Essence:
Jocelyn Timmons does not believe she is anything special — just an ordinary high school senior, living an ordinary life full of school-work, volleyball and friends. She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

Jackson Chandler moved in to the house across the street. His dark wavy hair, green eyes and charismatic personality draws everyone to him. Everyone, but Jocelyn.

Whenever Jackson gets near Jocelyn she feels ill and dizzy. When he touches her, she blacks out and has visions of another life, in another time. As the odd hallucinations evolve and become clearer, she feels a strong pull towards the people she sees there. Frightened, she watches her once stable life begin to crumble around her and she begins to question her own sanity.

Could it be possible that these episodes are actually her own memories of a life she is living somehow, somewhere, some-when? Maybe this is time-travel or some other paranormal mysticism? Our minds often wander, but can our souls?

Mary | 1 comments My novel is a historical fantasy set in seventeenth century France. The novel is based upon careful historical research, combined with magical fantasy, involving the immortal Comte de St Germain. It concerns the scandal that connected some members of the aristocracy with the Paris underworld of poisoning and sorcery. Also, the story of the King's secret wife, Madame de Maintenon. The book is called 'The Sorceress and the Sun King' and is available on Amazon. Great reviews so far.It would appeal to those who like magical tales, as well as historical fiction.

Matthew Willis | 1 comments Interesting disussion. I've been tying myself up in knots since my novel came out as to whether it's strictly historical fantasy or could be called historical fiction. I wrote it as if I was writing 'straight' historical fiction - it's based on a real event and makes extensive use of the evidence that exists around that event, as well as more generally into the period and setting. It just happens that the incident in question concerns the sighting of a creature that is generally thought to be mythical (a giant sea-serpent, as reported by the officers of HMS Daedalus in 1848).

I suspect I've answered my own question in some respects, because I've taken it as read that the sea serpent was real and not either a hoax or a huge misinterpretation of the evidence. To compound the 'sin' I've written some of the narrative from the creature's POV. Broadly I'm happy for the novel to be considered historical fantasy. The trouble is, if the sea serpent actually existed, then it is by definition not fantasy, surely??

Callista Hunter (callista_hunter) | 1 comments Hello,

I am calling my novel historical fantasy. It has an ancient Roman setting, but contains multiple anachronisms and historical inaccuracies - and also, the Roman gods are real in my story!

I am very much looking for reviewers if anyone is interested - I'm a new indie author and can use all the help I can get. here is the blurb:

Olivia is a sixteen-year-old Vestal Virgin, a happy devotee of her beloved goddess Vesta in her home nation of Parcae. But when her faith in Vesta is shaken, Olivia illegally experiments with her own divine power, making a discovery that could save her country from war - if she's brave enough to share it.

After an accidental revelation proves Vesta is fake, Olivia and her fellow Virgins are tempted by a charismatic academy boy, Cassius, to invoke the real gods. Although they risk death if they are discovered, Olivia and her friends test their skills in secret experiments. But their games take an unexpected turn when flighty blonde Lucia reveals surprisingly deadly powers.

Gaius, a brilliant military student, must protect the girls and plan for war against an enemy nation while ignoring his growing attachment to Olivia. As a Vestal Virgin she has taken a holy vow of chastity, and the consequences of breaking it are severe...

Ruth Casie (ruthacasie) | 4 comments Hi -

I wanted to tell you about my new book,
Knight of Rapture by Ruth A. Casie Knight of Rapture

For months Lord Arik has been trying to find the precise spell to rescue his wife, Rebeka, but the druid knight will soon discover that reaching her four hundred years in the future is the easiest part of his quest.
Bran, the dark druid, follows Arik across the centuries, tireless in his quest for revenge. He’ll force Arik to make a choice, return to save his beloved family and home or stay in the 21st century and save Rebeka. He can’t save them both.
Rebeka Tyler has no recollection of where she’s been the past five months. On top of that, ownership of her home, Fayne Manor, is called into question. When accidents begin to happen it looks more and more like she is the target. Further complicating things is the strange man who conveniently appears wherever trouble brews—watching her, perhaps even….protecting her? Or is he a deliberate attempt to distract her? Rebeka can only be sure of one thing—her family name and manor have survived for over eleven centuries. She won’t let them fall… in any century.

Other books in this series include:
Knight of Runes by Ruth A. Casie Knight of Runes
