I'd have to say I prefer PJO, because it's tough to keep up with all the character backstories between book release dates for HoO; I always forget the Roman characters' backgrounds while beginning a new book in the series. In PJO, it's easier to get attached to the characters, and develop a personal connection with them, whereas in HoO there's so much going on that the plot gets complicated and hectic.
I like both series, though, and I'm eagerly awaiting the House of Hades!

when you come to HoO there are way too many characters and not all of them are interesting!i ended up waiting for leo's povs in lost hero and percy's in son of neptune.the plots become too complicated and the series doesn't compare in humor to the original.
PJO had more characters that were developed well and even though HOO actually has a more interesting plot with the Romans, PJO's plots and subplots stand pretty well.
Not to mention PJO had actual villains that could fight and think of smart plans. Remember Kronos and Luke and Atlas? The main conflict in the series was also not a clear good vs evil fight which adds more to the series.
HOO's new characters generally lacked development and likable traits. The only good main character to come out of HOO were Leo and possibly Hazel. The rest were bland or were just unlikable such as Jason and Piper. Not to mention, Percy gets butchered badly in the new series and loses some of his personality. Annabeth was lucky not to be butchered as much as her boyfriend.
HOO's villains were too easily defeated by the Seven. Remember those giants who were said to be stronger than even the Titans from PJO? Five of them were already killed as of Mark of Athena. What the Hades?!
The only thing HOO really has on PJO is its plot and minor characters. I actually liked the new minor characters more than the new main characters. Reyna, Hylla, Octavian, Terminus, and Nemesis were certainly better written than Jason, Piper, Frank, and Hazel.

But, HoO is an awesome series and so exciting. I guess it's more for a little older readers.
Can't decide ^^
PJO, nothing HOO has can beat Last Olympian.
