Hello all,

I just wanted to give everyone ample time to prepare for a yearly challenge I have in mind for 2013.

It's called The Dustbuster Challenge.

The point? We all own books. Ebooks and regular books. They're there, calling our names, but some are getting ignored. Well, they are begging to be read!!!

This challenge asks the question: how many of these books can you read in 2013?

Only books you own up to December 31st, 2012 should be added. If you go on a shopping spree on January 1st, 2013...don't add those. ;p

Ok, so what do I need to do now, in November, you ask????

Make a shelf for all the books you own!! Some of you may have this already! Yippeee!!! Others don't. I'm sort of one foot in and one foot out. I started doing this a few months ago but have not added all of them yet. I wanted to give you all lots of time to add books to a shelf before the challenge starts.

So, get busy!!! :)

The idea is to start with a number and see how many of those you actually read. If you don't have a starting point, this won't work like it is intended.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this!

Will you be checking when we added books to that particular shelf? Or should i make a new one so you don't have to check when i added them. I own a LOT of books, lol.

Great idea! I have sooooooooooo many books that i haven't read yet and keep putting off.

I don't think I can join cause I have about 350 ebooks I would have to add + the ones in the series + the ones I read online + the ones I waiting to come out and the new one that would add up to about 3,00,000

I want to be involved! I am going to title my shelf Books That I Own - and in 2013 when I read them I will also add them to a Dustbuster Challenge Shelf.

I'm up for the challange. I have been keeping up with my Owned Books List. I also have a books wishlist i update every time I just go out and buy them myself.

I've chosen to make another shelf :)
This one will be called, 'My Books 2012' But i might change it.

I've changed it to 'Dustbuster Challenge Books.'

Awesome idea! I have about 200 books saved on my Kindle, but because it's one of the older model devices, I can't see the covers very easily. If I put those title on GR, I may actually start reading them, lol.

Well, I used to have about 300 books until 2 years ago when I left my boyfriend and could only take the clothes on my back. So, its really down to maybe 30 books. I NEED MORE!

A couple months ago I made a shelf called "Pick4Me Potentials" for the several groups I belong to which do Pick4Me's-I made sure only books I own go on that shelf, so I know I have them. Well, I have Nov. and Dec. to add other books to it that I already have. I don't know that I can ever get all of them added; as of this moment, that bookshelf holds 916. That's not to mention the books in piles and spilling all over the floor and on tables and dressers and bookcases and across my 2 Kindles and on the laptop and on the flash drive.:))) But I think I'll have enough to set a goal for this challenge when the time comes.:)

Yes. You will be required to make a shelf for the actual challenge and add the books you read so they can count for the actual challenge when it starts. I would like to check on total percentages, not just total numbers. So, I will actually be looking at two different shelves for this. Since you cannot use the name of an existing shelf as the name for a challenge's shelf, you must have two shelves. One that will list all the books you own and one that will track you as you mark them "read".

And skipping ahead to other comments...you don't have to read them all!!!! Nor, do you have to read them if you have 5,000 books. The point is this: (an example) I, as of 12/31/12, own 135 books. How many of those 135 will I read in 2013?
The point is not to actually read all 135 books. I think it would be fun to see how many of those specific books you read as opposed to how many books total (like the regular Goodreads yearly challenge tracks).

This challenge will vary greatly and I think that's part of the fun. As you sign up for the challenge in January your goal # should be the total # of books on the shelf of your owned books. IF you have multiple shelves for books you own, like I do, then add them up and that total should be your goal #.
For example, I split mine up so I know what I own on my Kindle, what I own on my Nook and I will be adding what I own in "real paper".

I would suggest calling it something else, and then once the challenge goes live and you join in you can call that one "Dustbuster Challenge" and add as you mark them read like any other challenge.
Otherwise, you'll have to call it Dustbuster 2 or something and I know that would confuse me. :) But, maybe you're not as easily confused?? lol

I'm in too. I will make my 2 shelves and label them "books I own" and " read books I own" I think this is going to be a fun challenge ;)

I have over a hundred that I haven't read yet either. the percentage would be small with what I can fit in my schedule per year.

I've just called mine '2013 Dustbuster Challenge' and am going through my Kobo as we speak, it's crazy how many I have! I don't even want to think about my paper backs lol!

I have been going through my nook and kindle and entering in all the books I haven't yet and my distbuster shelf is up to 586! I need to quit buying books!

I was just thinking of doing something like this. Actually, I think of this every January, that I'm not going to get anything else, until I finish whatever books I have on my book shelf or nook. Of course that has never panned out. I am so about this challenge though!!! I guess the competitive side of me comes out, with things like this. Thanks Cristina, for the kick in the ass!

Oh boy, this is a great challenge. I have so many sad and forgotten books.

Call it 2013 Reading Shelf.

And then, when the challenge goes live and I create the widget...call that one 2013 DustBuster Challenge.

The first will be for ALL your books.

Then the challenge shelf (dustbuster) will keep count of what you're reading.

When the challenge does go live, just check the total number of books you have on your 2013 Reading Shelf and that should be your goal # of books for the challenge.

that's a great idea! i might be in touch, depending on the number of my shelf...

This sounds like a fun challenge. I wonder how many of those books would I read. That might help me control the urge to buy more books :) Thanks for the idea. I'm totally in!!

i made the shelf and took the Chance to finally add All my german and french Books - now I'm having so many Books to read next year, that I really have no good reason to buy new ones. :-S But I will buy new Books, it just feels to damn good! :-P I'm looking forward to the challenge!

Well, I finally started creating my 2013 Reading Shelf for this challenge. I have only added maybe 10% of what I still have to read! Geez, I didn't think it was going to take me this long!! But, I have to take a break ... More (books) to come! LOL! :)

Can books that are realeased in 2013 be added to the shelf? Because there are a few that I've been wanting to read for awhile now that are being realeased within the first few months of 2013.

I'm confused. Are we supposed to only put the books we own that we haven't read or all of our books read and unread??

Catherine - Only the ones you haven't read yet. It's a books I own TBR challenge.

Brittney - Nope. You must have them physically/electronically as of 12/31/2012.

Cristina .... Thank goodness you did give us ample notice! LOL! :) I have the feeling I will be setting up the shelf for several days over the next few weeks! Before the 12/31 deadline for sure! :)
