I noticed that too lol. I thought, hmmm, I could break the tie and just hope no one else uses their votes to tie it again!
Actually that would have been rather exciting.

I did, I saw it the other day...super uber creepy! I'm excited about this one again after being inadvertantly spoiled :)

BTW, welcome to your first book club. Looking forward to your answers and comments.
Enjoy!

Hi Donna! Welcome! There are no dumb questions, and I had a lot of the same ones so if there are dumb questions we must be dumb together :)
Everyone at some point will fall behind, I usually do. It's not a big deal, you just catch up when you have time, the questions will still be here when you get caught up. There's no need to register or anything, just start reading and posting along. Usually along the way we get a few people who hadn't intended to read the book with us that just jump on in later. And of course you can read ahead, but if you post something that could be a spoiler that is ahead of the day's reading you will want to put it in a spoiler tag for everyone else who may not be there yet.

Thanks for posting this, Stefani!
Donna, under our GoodReads 101 folder there is info on how to insert a spoiler , in case you need to know how.

For me, I always have more than one book I'm working on whether it's part of a group read for not lol. It just depends on what's going on here. I am interested in 2 of the BOTM books this month, and not really interested in the series read so it'll just be one book group book at a time. But I will always have another one on the side too.

Well, I'll guess I'll have to do some math...
Lisarenee, is the reading schedule based on hardcover edition?

I would guess that it is based on the hardcover since that's the only version (apart from ebook) that's available in the US. Paperback is only a UK version, so hardcover would make the most sense.

Ok, thanks.
My ereader says the book has 229 pages, I guess a round number was too much to ask :)

Yes, just search for the beginning and ending sentences I listed and bookmark them. I tried to make it as easy as possible. Today's is the easiest as it encompasses the whole of Part 1.

I was thinking about doing that... there is not much else I can do :)

Ohhh... that is so annoying...

1) What did you think of the writing style? For me it feels like I'm viewing everything from the outside and aren't invested in the couple. I feel like I'm just observing.
2) What do you think was in the shots? The assistant said a little of this and a little of that? Lions, tigers, bears and a goby fish? Oh, my! Would you turn tail and run at that moment? Do you think the assistant trying to warn them?
3) If you were Leslie would you have let them give you the shot? I would have decked everyone and run the H-E double hockey sticks out of there!
4) What do you think happened to the Johnsons?
5) Not liking the hamster and mice eating. What the heck? Definitely a horror story.
6) Do you think the whole area they live in has these infected (for lack of a better word) people? First their was a kid biting the nanny, a father saying he could just eat his kid up....
7) Thoughts so far?

2. If I had to guess, the shots contained dna from a whole host of animals (with a lot of wild dog/wolf). I did not get the feeling the assistant was warning them at all, and frankly, yes I would run like the wind!! lol
3. If I was Leslie, I would have been out of there after seeing the waiting room!!!
4. Again, with so little detail, it hard to say what happened to the Johnson's. I feel like they may have harmed their child, and ran for it.
5. The insides of the fridge made me queasy!! Definitely a horror story.
6. I do feel like there is "something in the air", with all these little tidbits. Hopefully we will get more answers.
7. So far, I'm not crazy about it, because I need to be vested in my main characters, and I'm just not feeling anything. I hope it gets better!! :)

1) What did you think of the writing style? For me it feels like I'm viewing everything from the outside and aren't invested in the couple. I feel like I'm just observing.
The writing style isn't bothering me yet. It isn't my favorite, but I think there is so much interest for me in the craziness that is going on that I am not really caring about the characters. I just want to know what the heck is going on with the couple.
2) What do you think was in the shots? The assistant said a little of this and a little of that? Lions, tigers, bears and a goby fish? Oh, my! Would you turn tail and run at that moment? Do you think the assistant trying to warn them?
I think that there is a mix of a lot of different animals in the shots. I am wondering if there are some other drugs as well. I don't think that the assistant was trying to warn them at all and I don't think that he feels anything at all towards anyone. He seemed very indifferent. I would have hightailed it for the heals as soon as I saw the dog, refund or no refund.
3) If you were Leslie would you have let them give you the shot? I would have decked everyone and run the H-E double hockey sticks out of there!
This whole scene seemed a bit far fetched. I doubt anyone who was truly that scared would have sat there and not put up a fight. I think the author could have made it a bit more realistic.
4) What do you think happened to the Johnsons?
I am wondering if the changes to their bodies and the horror of eating hamsters and the like made them ashamed enough to move away. I doubt that they injured their child, but it is possible given the research done by Leslie. I found the post-it note creepy.
5) Not liking the hamster and mice eating. What the heck? Definitely a horror story.
This is gross to me too. The dog humping Alex was also weird and gross. I am finding it a bit graphic for my normal tastes.
6) Do you think the whole area they live in has these infected (for lack of a better word) people? First their was a kid biting the nanny, a father saying he could just eat his kid up....
I don't think the father saying he could just eat his child up was anything crazy. I have heard people say this when playing with their child as a sort of game. However the nanny being bitten was a bit creepy. I would find the story way to far fetched if everyone had infertility problems and went to Dr. Kis for help. I don't know how else they would be infected.
7) Thoughts so far?
The story itself is keeping me interested, but the writing leaves a bit to be desired. It won't get a very high rating for me if the gross and nasty bits get any worse. I am not necessarily a fan of that kind of novel, but this book sounded so interesting I just had to give it a try.

1) I agree wholeheartedly with you here. The reading is rather dry.
2) I'm guessing you're right about this.
3) Having a dog in the doctor's office makes a person wonder how clean things truly are. Seems unsanitary.
4) I hope we find out.
5) I did a little "Ew!" at that too. This is not a book for pet lovers.
6) Crossing my fingers.
7) I'm intrigued, but not really hooked. It's okay so far.

1) I want to know too.
2) I wouldn't be surprised by a drug.
3) A shot of a sedative would have been nice. Throughout the scene I kept thinking. "you want your wife to get pregnant, so you leave her by herself with two strangers who are male?" I would be furious with my hubby.
4) The physical changes are crazy. I can't think of what they'd have to be injected with to cause it. Plus the animal behavior at the hotel was a bit much.
5) Wouldn't you know it, the one time the author goes into great detail about something and it has to be the humping dog? Not getting the warm fuzzies from that one.
6) At first I didn't give any thought to the "I could just eat you up" remark, however, after the little trip, I've just got to wonder.
7) I'm hoping things get better.

1.It reminds me of a movie's flashbacks... or when we see a scene from above. It will make the character connection harder IMO.
2.Keeping with the movie analogy, it reminds me of the Island of Dr. Moreau... I think it was some weird animal DNA, specially predators... I would run for the hills without looking back. Hell, I'm from Europe, there was no way I will go to a remote & poor & dirt & deserted east Slovenia town without telling a soul and specially not to do an secret and experiment treatment. Are they nuts?
3.Hell no. I would put so much a fight that not even Zeus the dog would keep me restrained.
4.Something weird for sure. I hope we'll find out but I doubt it.
5.Major Yuck. I'm starting to think maybe I don't have the stomach to read the book after all.
6.Well, the father saying that wasn't that weird... but the kid being scared of the father is... and the whole nanny being bitten story without further explanation makes me wonder... and the attack on the other doctor, plus the hamster eating... oh gods... why did I read that during lunch break?
7. Yuck. No other word.

My favorite reading genre is UF & PNR. I'm used to demons, and shapeshifters and furryness and monsters eating weird stuff... that I can get it. Demons and bad entities doing bad things doesn't shock me the least. Wild genetic experiments in this context either.
However, in a book who is supposed to be normal, a DNA mix, with the consequences of someone turning into an animal and start eating rats and expressing wild animal behavior totally grosses me out and makes my stomach turn...
I don't get it. Maybe is the dark side of the so called human being that troubles me.
Seriously... Alex was so driven to become a father that allows his own wife to be forced to be injected by two strangers without having a clue what the treatment was? That is slightly disturbing... as a woman, the one thing I expect is being able to trust my significant other... I feel betrayed in Leslie's name!

1) What did you think of the writing style? For me it feels like I'm viewing everything from the outside and aren't invested in the couple. I feel like I'm just observing.
I am not liking the POV at all. It feels very detached from the story and the characters. It also seems very lacking in detail. For example the thing with the hamster...it just happened but because of the POV we have no idea why it happened. I'm struggling with it.
2) What do you think was in the shots? The assistant said a little of this and a little of that? Lions, tigers, bears and a goby fish? Oh, my! Would you turn tail and run at that moment? Do you think the assistant trying to warn them?
I was a bit annoyed that they mentioned the goby fish apparently, it kind of gave away the plot a bit when Leslie sais "goby fish eat their young." Well great, thanks for telling me where it's going lol. But there is no possible way I would have even set foot in the office in the first place without knowing EXACTLY what was going on.
3) If you were Leslie would you have let them give you the shot? I would have decked everyone and run the H-E double hockey sticks out of there!
Hell no! I would have jumped out the window if I had to. I wanted to know how they convinced her, or forced her, after Alex left the room. I was disappointed that we didn't see that. We saw the dog humping for almost no reason but not anything to do with that..which would have been important.
4) What do you think happened to the Johnsons?
I think they probably killed their child and then got scared and ran.
5) Not liking the hamster and mice eating. What the heck? Definitely a horror story.
Yeah, that was weird. It would have been better if we knew WHY Alex picked it up or WHY he decided to eat it. Not knowing that takes some of the horror out of it for me.
6) Do you think the whole area they live in has these infected (for lack of a better word) people? First their was a kid biting the nanny, a father saying he could just eat his kid up....
The father thing I just thought was kind of amusing foreshadowing. But the nanny..yeah that was weird. I dunno what's up with that though, because as far as we know the kids are normal..it's the parents who aren't.
7) Thoughts so far?
I find the story intriguing, but I can't connect to it so far. And I really didn't need to hear about Leslie's genital furriness..TMI author TMI. It's strange the things he decides to be detailed about. Details about the dog humping Alex and Leslie's genital fur but not on WHY any of this is happening or HOW they are thinking and feeling.

AMEN! For all Alex knows they held his wife down and injected her against her will! And I'm furious with her for just getting on with their lives...no harm, no foul. First thing I'd have done is leave that office, call the police and report the doctor for assault and then file for divorce.

Exactly!!
OK, it could be the drugs kicking in, however, he drag her across the Atlantic without taking her feelings into consideration... that only heats my blood enough to not leaving the drugs being an excuse for both their reactions.
And I agree with you, the POV is not working... the author isn't explaining anything relevant... and the things he focus are... just delivering facts instead of explanations

Oh... no... are they eating their pets?!
I'm starting to think that finish this book will prove to be a challenge.

Oh... no... are they eating their pets?!
I'm starting to think that finish this book will prove to be a challenge."
Yeah, I got to that part too. *shudder* At least don't let the animals meet the kids!! For God's sake, keep them in the basement or something not make it a family pet.

I had to stop reading to breathe.
I even went to the book nomination tag to confirm if I wasn't mistaken, only to realize that it says anything goes expect Paranormal/YA/SciFi/Fantasy, so horror is still available as long as it doesn't fall into paranormal...
OK, maybe I'm being a wuss, I used to like creepy genetics books... and so far the results are not as different as the ones in Robin Cook's Acceptable Risk, I vaguely recall something about an half eaten dog... so why I'm so grossed out with this one? No idea... I suspect because it involves kids, and now I'm a pet owner... maybe I'm getting too old :o)
