and i'll start off by nominating a classic that i should have read decades ago: Alas, Babylon

Tyrone (28daysearlier) | 9 comments I'd like to recommend All My Sins Remembered by Joe Haldeman. I read this shortly after the The Forever War and loved it almost as much.

message 10: by Baffi (new)

Baffi I second both "Fuzzy Nation" and "Shards of Honor". Damn, this is going to be hard. And that's why I won't nominate anything myself.

I have had this book waiting tbr forever!

message 13: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 93 comments May I just second Shards of Honor and raise it to the entire duology, which is actually more of a 2-part very long book?

Cordelia's Honor (Vorkosigan Saga, #1-2; Vorkosigan Omnibus, #1) by Lois McMaster Bujold contains Shards of Honour as well as Barrayar, which together comprise the beginning of an epic space opera by Lois McMaster Bujold - The Vorkosigan Saga is a series for which Lois has won more Hugos and Nebulas than anyone else (short of Heinlein, who won precisely ONE more than her in his prolific career - but she's not done writing yet!)

There are something like 17 books (plus 3 or 4 short stories) in The Vorkosigan Saga so if you want to get hooked, start by "going shopping" with Cordelia in Cordelia's Honor. Just never bring a gun to a sword fight (haha).

This seems like it would be a great read.

Short too..if you have other monthly read commitments this is an ideal pick. ;-)

message 16: by Jessie J (new)

Jessie J (subseti) | 69 comments Haven't been active lately (no spare time) but I recently read "All My Sins Remembered" (great book), just bough "Fuzzy Nation" in a used book store, and the Vorkosigan Saga is one of my all-time favs, so rereading "Shards of Honor" would be great. I'm also open to new reads as well. :^)

Marjorie Friday Baldwin (marjoriefbaldwin) | 93 comments I should add that although Cordelia's Honor costs $6 (direct from the publisher in all common formats for one price: click here for the Baen eBooks site), the second book of the Vorkosigan Saga, The Warrior's Apprentice, is actually available from the Baen Free Library -- which means you can get it in all common eBook formats for free:

@phoenicianbooks

p.s. it's a "free sample" of the "reader crack" even if it's not picked for this group's group read :)
