I am reading a book and the author describes the heroine wiping sleep out of her eyes and peeling off loose nails and dumping them. That's a little too much for me. I don't really care for intensive descriptions of bodily functions and stuff like that. I think we can assume that people in the books have to do that kind of stuff, and not have to hear about it.

I don't mind if the author says the character had to go to the bathroom and leaves it at that.

How much is too much for you?

If you want to give a general description that's fine, but let's keep discussion squeamish-member friendly.

I think getting too detailed could be too much for me. I get tired of some authors giving a minute by minute account of a person's day. Really boring. We know that certain things are done and we don't want to read about it.

I think, like you said, they went to the bathroom and leave the rest to our imagination.

I agree with you about the writing being too detailed in general. I prefer concise writing. I don't need to know everything about the room the character is in and everything they are wearing, and everything they do.

I especially don't want to hear about their bodily functions or bad hygiene habits. I can understand if the author throws in a line about chewing their nails or having bedhead, because that brings the character to life. But stuff that has an ick factor, I can do without.

Ironically, that book I am talking about is a Christian fiction novel. So I guess they aren't as stuffy as people assume. :)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) I think it's okay if it brings something to the story. But most of the time I expect it probably doesn't...

Jillian (NetGalley Addict) (busymomsbookreviews) I am okay with the wiping sleep from their eyes or saying they are going to the bathroom. Bad hygiene habit do not need to be described in detail, they can say someone has not showered or they smell.

I agree, Lily...certain descriptive words take me right out of the story when I have to say ewww. The p word is one of the worst to me and so unfortunately overused.

Me three!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 95 comments I don't mind the whole, sleep wiping from eyes. But a while ago, and I can't remember what the name of the book was . . . but anywho . . . the girl went to the ladies room and the author described everything that went on in there.

I don't need to know what she did in the bathroom!! She took a pit stop, the end.

Don't forget those two horrible-horrible words that begin with 'c'.....these two 'c's put me off the book straight away...so degrading, and unromantic...etc
