Thanks for starting this thread Conny... I completely forgot to!

Heather Pretty much if Oprah grabs ahold of it, I'm ashamed to say I'm reading it/have read it. There are few exceptions, but that's my general rule! :)

Yeah, that.

Becca | 6 comments I do not go for books that are all hyped up...just the opposite actually - especially oprah books (i'm not judging, that's just me!). I am probably missing out on some good ones though, like Life of Pi, Water for Elephants, etc... I have found that I am usually disappointed with books that get alot of hype - i expect something out of it that I usually don't get.

Heather I did read a few of them, but I wait a couple of years until the hype dies down if there is one I want to read. I was so mad earlier this year because I started to read Edgar Sawtelle and then BAM-here comes Oprah telling everyone to read it!

I figure if it's still getting good reviews several years after the hype dies down, then it's worth a try if I don't have anything better to do. I ended up liking The Secret Life of Bees and Water for Elephants, but I only recently read them.

Heather I loved The Secret Life of Bees but read it before all the hype hit. I just finished Water for Elephants and was impressed with that one, too!

I still haven't read Secret Life of Bees, mainly because of the hype factor. I *loved* Water For Elephants, though, and would recommend that despite all the hype.

Becca,
I agree with you on going against the tide on books that are overly hyped -- however I have to say that you won't be disappointed with Life of Pi. It is such an interesting story.

Stephanie The Lovely Bones was much hyped. I thought it was terrible.

I also tend to stay away from books that receive too much hype. I prefer recommendations from friends, high ratings on Goodreads, and Bookmarks magazine.
