I really like character-driven bks & because of my next bk have been doing a lot of research on African-American topics so was especially interested in the black migration north. I do wish she had spent more time on each character & perhaps had fewer "tribes". I thought the writing really captured the essence of each character, though.

I actually prefer character-driven stories! I'm glad you enjoyed it, Rosalie.:) Thank you for your input, it is much appreciated!

message 117: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kcanty313) I finished Midwives last night, and I have no idea what to pick up for my first 2013 read. Midwives was a really good read. It's a 4-4.5 star book for me.

Lawrence | 51 comments If you love James Patterson, I would recommend reading these two books in 2013: Zoo by James Patterson & Guilty Wives by James Patterson .

Alondra Miller Congrats, Lee!! That is amazing; does your brain hurt??

message 120: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Finished up Different Seasons the other night. I liked "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "The Breathing Method" the best. Does anyone else find it humorous that King invented a prison that has the word "shank" in its name?

message 121: by Shell (last edited Jan 01, 2013 09:07PM) (new)

Shell (shellcampbell) I just finished reading The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again for the first time. So glad I have finally checked that off my 'to read' list and it also means I am 1 book down for my 2013 reading challenge! I'm now moving on to Needful Things. I'm hoping to finish this and The Great Gatsby by the end of January. Not sure how I'll go as it's going to be a busy month!

LOL No! I am a fast reader, and it helps to have a day off work with no interruptions. When I get into a book, I tend to tune the rest of the world out. Yesterday was a good day for reading.

@Dustin - Thanks! I am getting off to a good start this year, read a book and a half yesterday. Hoping to finish I-35 tonight after work.

Chuck, it is like an extended version of Stephen Kings short story. It was so amazing and yes, hints of stand by me; but only as far as the adventures of boys go. I think it is just so relatable (just like Kings children in his stories) that it makes sense to draw comparisons. It was awesome and takes nothing away from King. They are both fantastic :D

Rosalie Turner I just finished "Sweet Tooth" I enjoyed it - good character development & a little insight into the back side of esdpionage, a subject that fascinates me. (I always wanted to be a spy).

Hi, Lawrence!

I'm glad to see you reading this. I've actually had it on my "to-read" list for awhile, and have yet to come across a negative review. The premise is fascinating, IMO! Did you know that there was a television series based on Sawyer's novel?
