Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments As I'm feeling pretty rotten, I'd like something not too taxing on the brain. Humour would good. Short stories preferably. Don't think I can handle a long, intricate plot today.

Anything come to mind?

Joe Cawley (joecawley) | 8 comments Sorry to hear you're feeling rotten, Patti. A dollop of More Ketchup Than Salsa should do the trick. Easy read, escapism to a sunny land and full of the funny stuff.
Hope you feel better soon.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments This book always cheers me up when I'm feeling a bit ropey Patti. Each chapter is self contained. Get better soon xx (hope you're taking echinacea?)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments Short stories? I don't know if you've already read Something Nice - 10 Stories, Patti? But enough of that self-promotion rot! Other than my own work there's a certain A Splendid Salmagundi I'm enjoying at the moment, but I'm sure you've read that! Transmission is mostly science-fiction, but I really enjoyed the stories therein, and some of them are fairly light-hearted, if not totally humour-lead.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks for the suggestions so far, lovelies. Nothing wrong with a bit of self promo. Who better than the author to know if book fits what I'm looking for.

Thanks Andrew. Just sent Something Nice to my kindle. I was sure I already had it, though. Weird.

Gonna settle in with it now.

Keep the suggestions coming please. I'll not be leaving my bed today.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments Have you tried any of the 'Jeeves' books Patti???

Carry on, Jeeves

Right Ho, Jeeves

They aren't shorts but they're funny and not very taxing.

The Sooner is a nice light YA adventure and it has some funny bits in it too.

I'll have a think and see if I can come up with any more!

James Campbell (jamesccamp) | 44 comments Thrift was quite funny – I rarely lough out loud at books but this one had me doing so quite regularly.

If you're a fan of Victorian humour, then New Grub Street by George Gissing is actually quite funny, yet also touching, in turns.

Ooh *blushes* I must admit I thought you had it already, but I hope you enjoy!

I went through a big PG Wodehouse phase once when I was ill with bronchitis as a kid - they're undemanding but great fun. If you come across "Come On, Jeeves!", it's based on a Wodehouse stage play - I starred in an am dram version a few years ago and keep meaning to track down the prose version!

I also enjoyed a collection of Kingsley Amis short stories when I was probably a little too young to be reading them. They were a bit of an odd assortment, mind.

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments If I was feeling under the weather, I'd reach for That Bear Ate My Pants!. Not short stories, but bite-sized chapters and it will make you smile.

Drew, help me out would you! Which Jeeves book is it that has the story where Bingo Little and his writer wife have one of the wife's friends to stay and she turns out to be a bit of a health freak??? It's one of my favourites but I can't remember for the life of me which book it is! It was the one I wanted to recommend to Patti.

When I'm poorly, I enjoy reading Georgette Heyer, but I'm not sure that's your sort of thing. Although they are romantic, there is so much humour in them too! Especially something like The Grand Sophy or These Old Shades.

Another book that I never get tired of reading is, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. Very readable and hilarious in places.

:0)

Jim | 21812 comments I can always tell when I'm stressed out or ill, out come either my Terry Pratchett collection or my Astrix the Gaul books.

Both are perfect for when the midden hits the windmill and you've just had enough

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments May Contain Nuts was seriously funny.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Yes Jim - it's a well loved Pratchett for me when I'm feeling a bit Moby.
Hope you're bucking up a bit Patti.

I'm with you on the Georgette Heyer, Kew!!!

My favourites are:

Cotillion

Friday's Child

They are the funniest, in my opinion!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks everyone.

Book reccies are even better than a bowl of soup and a pat on the head.

I've only been dipping. I keep dropping off to sleep.
