Thanks to the mods for coming up with this challenge, it will really help with me not getting bored of reading the same style of literature all year.

(I over did it a bit with the scifi/fantasy this year, but it was my goal to get more into it and I enjoyed all that I read.)

Hmm.. Post-apocalyptic AND Dystopian?
Noir AND hard-boiled? AND True Crime and Thriller AND Adventure ? Just saying.. Not that i'd want a western, but what about a Western genre? I suppose that could go under adventure. ..and what about Modernist, Post-modernist and Speculative? and Weird or New Weird or Bizarro?

Oh, and what about War fiction? Like WW1 and or WW2 and or Vietnam/Korea, etc etc

You also forgot to add Mythology and Pre-Victorian literature.

You also forgot to add short stories and novellas, and is "drama" = Play?

Now, if you added the missing genres i mentioned, that would REALLY be an insane challenge. :D

The way I look it is;

Paranormal seem to defy the known laws of science. Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation example telepathy, medium, people with powers.

Supernatural relates to existence outside the natural world. Example ghosts, werewolves, vampires, etc

With Non fiction it can be a wide range of different books, as with Educational it was picked to focus on self development type books

Marie (marieemonaghan) | 8 comments I see, thank you! I'm excited to start the challenge - going to be picking 2 or 3 books each month rather than planning ahead for the whole year. This month I'll be tackling Hard-Boiled, Young Adult & Non-fiction:

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett The Fault in Our Stars by John Green What Is Madness? by Darian Leader

The biggest challenges for me will definitely be poetry and drama - I've no idea where to start!

message 91: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Thanks, Michael, for the definitions. I had problems with exactly the genres you explained. Before I used your genre shelfes for orientation ;)

In January I want to read a Graphic Novel (Hilda and the Midnight Giant), a drama (Stella by Goethe), and Swann's Way for the classic genre.

message 92: by Jill (last edited Jan 05, 2013 01:55PM) (new)

Jill I'm excited for this! I've resolved to read more books in general, but especially more books outside of my comfort zone this year, so this is perfect. My list is below, but I'm struggling with a few of the genres.

Adventure: American Gods
Auto-Biography/Biography: A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
Chick-Lit: Bridget Jones's Diary
Childrens Book: Peter Pan
Classics: Les Misérables
Cyberpunk: Ready Player One
Drama: No Exit and Three Other Plays
Dystopian: The Handmaid's Tale
Educational: The Stories of English
Erotica: The Bride Stripped Bare OR Tropic of Cancer
Espionage: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Fantasy: Tigana
Graphic Novel: Castle Waiting, Vol. 1
Gothic: Jane Eyre
Hard-Boiled: Farewell, My Lovely
Historical Fiction: Gone with the Wind
Horror: The Haunting of Hill House
Humour: Gods Behaving Badly
Literary Fiction: Beautiful Ruins
Magical Realism: The Master and Margarita
Mystery: The Moonstone
Noir: ??? Someone above said Mildred Pierce but that isn't immensely appealing to me.
Non Fiction: Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
Paranormal: Among Others
Philosophical: ???
Poetry: The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson
Post-Apocalyptic: Wool Omnibus
Romance: Persuasion
Science Fiction: Starglass
Steampunk: ???
Supernatural: Unholy Ghosts
Thriller: Bent Road
True Crime: People Who Eat Darkness: The Fate of Lucie Blackman
Urban Fantasy: Magic Bites
Victorian: Tess of the d'Urbervilles
Young Adult: Graffiti Moon

Any suggestions for noir and steampunk? I've looked at other readers' choices for these, and none really struck me.

Hi Jill, for erotica I'd recommend The Bride Stripped Bare by Nikki Gemmell/Anonymous. It's a little darker & disturbing than your usual erotic reads but very good & well written

And I'd recommend Ready Player One by Ernest Cline for cyberpunk.

Sorry I can't help you with the other's though. They're new to me :)

For erotica, I was looking for erotica "lite". The 2 I narrowed it to are Tropic of Cancer and The Decameron-
Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller The Decameron (Penguin Classics) by Giovanni Boccaccio
The upside of The Decameron is that it's a classic from 14th century and was banned then, but also again in the 1950's - the downside is it's 800 pages so too long for the challenge (for me), though I will read it eventually.
The Tropic of Cancer is another classic. From the few pages I've read it seems intriguing, somewhat noirish, not a page turner, and very different.

For post apocalyptic, check the feedback on Wool (lots of buzz) and for cyberpunk check Ready Player One.
Wool Omnibus (Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
They ended up as my choices for those categories.
