Rachel | 3531 comments the winter challenge will be from december 2nd- february 28th.

read 3 books (or more)
complete 3 tasks (or more)
books can be in any genre
re-reads are ok

so this winter complete 3 or more of the following tasks:

1. december = holiday movies: My favorite holiday movie is A Christmas Story (for those who haven't seen it, the story is told from a kid's point of view)

So this winter,

a. read a book SET DURING THE HOLIDAYS (winter holidays only)

OR

b. read a book in which at least part of the novel is told FROM A KID'S POINT OF VIEW (4-17 years old)

2. winter = cold temps- So this winter, read a book set in a COLD CLIMATE

3. december is read a new book month- So this winter,
read a book PUBLISHED IN 2013.

4. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on Jan. 15th. So this winter, read a book :

a. that is set during the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

OR

b. that features an AFRICAN AMERICAN HERO OR HEROINE

5. feb 12th, 2013 is mardi gras. So this winter, read a book set at least in part in LOUISIANA.

6. feb. 14th is valentine's day. So this winter, read a book in which:

a. the main character is a SUSPECT IN THE DISAPPEARANCE OR MURDER OF HIS/HER SIGNIFICANT OTHER

OR

b. the main character FALLS IN LOVE

7. feb. 20th is love your pet day. So this winter, read a book in which a BELOVED PET IS PART OF THE STORY.

8. random task-this task counts toward the challenge but is not inspired by the season. So this winter, read a book THAT HAS BEEN MADE INTO A MOVIE.

happy winter everyone!

Lacey (crazdwriter) Sweet...I already have a couple of books in mind already :-)

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Sounds great! I have some books in mind.
Possible reads for me:
1) Jurassic Park (Part is told by Tim and Lex)
2) Sphere by Michael Crichton (Set in the ocean, I think)
3) Zom-B Book 2 by Darren Shan (if it is out in time)
4) An Alex Cross novel by James Patterson
5) Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
6) Prey by Michael Crichton (Maybe?)
8) Cabal by Clive Barker (Movie is called Nightbreed and it is gonna be the next book I read.)

I am planning on reading every novel that Michael Crichton wrote early in the new year by publication date, under his name. So that is why there is a lot of his books on this list and all the books could change except for Cabal since I am reading that next for sure.

Time for me to start gathering books. I'm going to read Presumed Guilty by Tess Gerritsen to meet task #6 because the book starts with Miranda accused of murdering her boss/ex-lover. I'm gonna count ex-lover as being close to significant other :-) Sounds pretty perfect to me because I was already planning to read Presumed Guilty for the Tess Gerritsen Fans Group.

I am right now reading Along Came A Spider, I am 150 pages from finishing it! I love the mystery and crime solving in it. What I don't like is that James Patterson makes sure to constantly remind you Alex and his partner are black and the relationship between Alex and Jezzie. It just seem way too forced and also the constant reminder of it being an interracial relationship. Those are my only complaints with the book.

Michael Crichton wrote my favorite two novels Jurassic Park and The Lost World. I have also read Prey, it is also really great. I am sad to say I have not read any of his other novels. I own all of the ones he put out under his name except for two of them, The Great Train Robbery and Micro. I figured I would pick up the two I don't have and then read them all.

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments I am pretty sure I am getting a couple of Ian Fleming's 007 novels for Christmas. If that is the case and my parents get the ones I highlighted, I may end up reading the 007 series before touching Michael Crichton. I have doubts because the last time I asked for 007 novels for Christmas my parents got me books 5, From Russia With Love and 7 Goldfinger. My step dad said he looked for Dr. No but couldnt find it. I find it funny because they looked for the books in movie order instead of in the book series order. lol.

Christine | 798 comments I am so excited to do another challenge! I just set up my goal of 8 books to read, one from each category. I haven't decided which book to start with because I have a few books to finish first.

Which book is everybody hoping Santa will bring them for Christmas? I am hoping for The Chronicles of Downton Abbey: A New Era I'm not sure if it will meet any of the criteria for this challenge but it will satisfy my need for another season to begin.

Josh Barnett (joshyboy98311) | 366 comments Just completed my first book for the challenge.

4) Along Came a Spider (Alex Cross, #1) by James Patterson (main character, Alex Cross is a black detective psychologist.) It was a great story! =D This is also my first James Patterson novel I have read.

Next book I am starting tomorrow morning:
8) Cabal by Clive Barker It was turned into a movie called Nightbreed. I haven't seen the movie, so it will be a totally new experience but I hear it is a really awesome book and the movie is quite good as well.

Danell (danellbookworm) | 686 comments Thank You for putting together another great challenge!!

Currently reading "The White Darkness" by Geraldine McCaughrean, it can qualify for either part of the book written from a child's point of view or set in a cold climate.

Always wanted to start the Alex Cross series and what a perfect time to start!!

Thinking of reading either "The Help" or "Eat, Pray, Love" for the movie challenge.

Thanks again!!

Rachel, is it okay to finish a book and count it - I'm just curious because I started reading The Land Beyond the Portal for the Fall Challenge but I will finish the book tonight and it does meet the requirements for both challenges so can I count The Land Beyond the Portal as part of my Winter Challenge or is that cheating? What do you think? :-) and to further explore this inquiry...let's say I have been reading a particular book on and off again for several months or years and the book meets the challenge and I finish it during the challenge period can I count it or is that cheating?

I guess the real question I am trying to ask here is does the book have to be started and finished during the challenge period to be counted? (I am of course not trying to get Josh in trouble :-) but I want to know if I can work the system to my advantage - btw I cheat at Monopoly)

Thank You :-)

message 45: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3531 comments our challenge is all about having fun so as long as the book is finished during the season- i say count it-i will pretend you started it on the 2nd :)

p.s. you should never cheat at monopoly ;)
