Warren | 1556 comments I read a sample of
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore- by Robin Sloan.
I read a short blurb.
Would it fall under S&L?

terpkristin | 4407 comments I don't think so. It certainly has elements of the genres, but all in all, I'd categorize it as general fiction.

terpkristin | 4407 comments That isn't to say it isn't an enjoyable book--I quite liked it!

Warren | 1556 comments Thanks.
I just finished a novel about a PI named Dresden who lives in Chicago.
It's hard to tell from just the first blurb what your getting into.

I heard the short story on EscapePod a couple of years ago. The story was absolutely a sword with some laser (the computer stuff) mixed in. No doubt the short story qualified for S&L. However, when I read the novel, I found that all the fantasy elements were eliminated or changed to non-fantastic elements. However, so many of the story elements were the same that I ended up having to re-read the short story to see if I had remembered wrong.

So someones been going around and removing all traces of fantasy from the original material. That sounds like another conspiracy I read about.

Reminds me a little of the basis for The Shadow of the Wind where someone is working to remove all traces of the author of this book, especially copies of the book itself.

It's a book I highly recommend too, though it's more mystery than anything else.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I loved The Shadow of the Wind. It has that little touch of something magical.

Hmmm, actually, a story going around and removing all traces of fantasy from the original material would be quite fun to read about.
