25.11 - Vi's Task - Time to Explore!

New Year time is usually a time for discovery for me and my friends. We used to hit the libraries in search of new authors and we've discovered quite a few authors that we weren't supposed to ;) For this task, we will use GR's two main tools to find new books. Re-reads are not permitted for this task.

NOTE: Since both "Recommendations" and "Readers Also Enjoyed" may change, make a note of the date on which you developed your chain of books and include that in your post if the chain is no longer valid when you post your completed task.

Book 1: GR Recommendation

On the GR Title Bar, select Recommendations. This will take you to the GR's recommendations page where they generate recommendations based on your shelves or genre. Choose a shelf/genre based on your preference and from the recommendations, choose any book.

Book 2: From the Book's Home Page.

Roll a die from random.org page. Note the number rolled.

We will base this option on the book read for Book 1. Go to the book page for the book read for Book 1. On the right-hand side of the page, from the "Readings Also Enjoyed Similar Books" section, choose a book from any page of the list. (Note that there are typically several pages of books listed - you can tell how many by the dots at the top of the list.) Do this the number of times you've got from the die roll and select a book from the final list.

For example, let's assume that I've read Grimspace by Ann Aguirrefor Book 1 and I've rolled number 3 on the die. So for this book, I would start by choosing a book from the "Readers Also Enjoyed" list for Grimspace.

If I chose Touched by an Alien,(#1), I would click on that title to go to its main page and look at the "Readers Also Enjoyed" list for that book. This time, I chose Song of Scarabaeus,(#2), so I go to that book's main page and once again look at the "Readers Also Enjoyed" list. I can now choose any book from the "Readers Also Enjoyed" list for Song of Scarabaeus. I could now read Enemy Within from that list.(#3)

Note that you cannot use the same book twice when going to the nth book but you can use another book in the same series if it appears on one of the "Readers Also Enjoyed" lists. For instance, in the above example, I can use Grimspace only once but I did find Killbox in another of the lists. Also, you have to read the exact book; if the book happens to be in a series, you cannot read any other book in the series.

Required: Please state the die roll and the chain of books used to arrive at Book 2.

For the Book's homepage option, do we go to the number of pages we rolled in the also reccomends are and just read any book on that page?

Jayme, I'm not sure I get your question. Let me know if I've got it wrong.

Basically the aim of the second task is to form a chain of books. So, for the book 1 you've chosen and assume that 'n' is the number you get from the die. What you would do is:

1. Go to the Book Home Page for Book 1. You will visit the "Readers Also Enjoyed" section and choose any book (Book A) from any of the pages based on your preference. This will the book you read for Option 2 if you roll a 1.

2. If you've rolled a number more than 1, then you will continue to the Book A's home page and go to the "Readers Also Enjoyed" section and choose any book again. This is if you roll a 2.

The above process continues the number of times you get from rolling the die. The number of pages is independent of the number you get from the die.

So let me get this straight, I read the first book from my recommendations. Then, I go to that book's 'readers also enjoyed' and pick a book and read it if I rolled a one, but if I rolled a 2+ I go to the next book's 'readers also enjoyed', and the next, until I've gone through the number of books I rolled for?

Chose Bone Island Mambo (Alex Rutledge Series #3) (#1), went to that book's main page and chose Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar and Grill: A Novel (#2).

Now to get the books from the library.

Does the first reccommended book count-- in the count?
I rolled a 6. (So- I'd choose 5 more on each book's page?)

I'm assuming you didn't mean the book read for option 1. That would be Book 0. The first recommended book from Book 0's page would be Book 1. You would be reading the 5th book from this. I hope I was clear.

Can the books in the chain which we use to arrive at book two be books which we've read, or did you mean them to be new to us?

I rolled 6 so I've got a long chain to go through!

Option 1 is Far Cry - John Harvey. Option 2 is Blood Atonement - Dan Waddell (which I've read in June 2012.

Fiona, let me see if I can help. When you go to pick the second book, you can read any of the approximate 15 books listed. You do not need to select the first option. However, the book you select should be new to you.

Fiona, since you rolled a 1, you need to read a book from Far Cry's book page but it can be ANY book in that list. I see a list of 20+ books (you can see 5 dots at the top of the list). It need not be the first one (or the number you rolled from the die). See the pic below where I've chosen the 4th page (via the 4th dot):

Bea, I went to Recommendations, picked John Harvey book. Looked to Readers also enjoyed similar books and my die was rolled on to number 1. So 1st book was Blood Atonement - Dan Waddell.

Fiona, just to clarify - we try to form a chain of books for option 2. So since you've rolled a 1, you just have to choose a book from Far Cry's Home Page. But if you had rolled a 2 or more, then you would go to the book you've chosen from Far Cry's home page and find a book from that list and so on. That said, I hope the posts helped you pick out your book.

Vi, I have a book from Far Cry's home page (4th Dot) bottom book. But I need to read the 1st book. Can I then read book 2 or shall I choose a different book/author?

The book is The Disappeared - M.R. Hall (I have The Coroner to read by same author beforehand).

Fiona, you can read The Coroner and then The Disappeared. However, only The Disappeared will count for option 2 as it is the book on the list. You have to read the exact book on the list. Maybe you can use The Coroner for some other task?

Great task Vi! I had a lot of fun choosing the books I wanted to read out of all the recs. I think I got it right, but, can you confirm this for me?

Book 1: Winter's Tale which was a fantasy recommendation.

Book 2: Rolled a 3.

#1. A Trip to the Stars by Nicholas Christopher was on Page 4 of Winter's Tale's Similar books.

#2. Baking Cakes in Kigali: A Novel was on Page 5 of A Trip to the Stars' Similar books.

#3. The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives: A Novel was on Page 1 of Baking Cakes ---> this is my Book #2.

You read the 3rd book from Book 0, yes. You will read 2 books for this task - one for each option. Maybe you could post the chain for option 2 to confirm?

Okay I started with which on my Jodi Picoult shelf. Then I went to for rol; 1 which led me to for roll 2 which lead me to for roll 3. So I read for book 1 and for book 2, right?
