Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments Anybody want to talk about this year's reading goal and/or next year's?

message 2: by Marty (new)

Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments So let me answer myself. I changed my goal to 75 when i realized that my non-reading goal of working on my fitness was cutting deeply into my reading time. I had been hoping for roughly 100 books a year last few years. I am a bit behind, but in the neighborhood, and as i can read heavily around the holidays think my goal was roughly realistic.
My mother broke a hip in November and had surgery with some lingering cognitive effects, so I may need to plan for fewer next year. I'm going to debate that point with myself for the next few weeks.

carol. | 173 comments My hint for exercise--if you are being active enough and can't read while exercising (probably an exercise bike only), books on tape/MP3/etc is often a good way to get reading in while I'm exercising/walking/biking, etc.

Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments Carol, i do read some on the bike! I usually listen to the news on the radio though.

My goal again this year (2012) was 52 books, an average of one per week. I have finished 40 so far and have hopes of getting a couple more done this month, but I doubt I will meet my goal this year. I spend 1/4 of the year, about a week each month, at my father & sister's house (caregiving) and I rarely get time to read while I'm there. That has made a difference in my ability to meet my goal, I think.

But I probably will set the same goal for next year.

Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments Kathi, i'm the second of six siblings so there are a lot of us trying to give Mom a familiar face every day for a few hours at least. Really doing the caregiving like you are...well I stand in awe.

I'm a caregiver at the opposite end of the spectrum - life with a toddler doesn't leave much reading time either. Before he was born, I averaged 70-75 books a year, not counting re-reads. I've been able to read more the second half of this year now that I can count on the fact that once he's down for the night I won't hear from him again until morning (most nights, anyway), and I'm on track for probably 45-50 books this year.

I don't set goals, I just read what I have time to read.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments Being new to Goodreads this summer, I didn't set a goal this year.
I think I'll have to set my goal next year at 50. Not very many ...but even that will be difficult for me.

Books on tape/dvd are not an option for me at this point.
:(

message 9: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I upped last year's goal of 75 books by five more, but at this point I'm not even close to either. Disappointing myself, but enjoying what I've managed to read thus far.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 82 comments Rethinking......better go with 25 next year. 50 was looking pretty far fetched. Better (for me) to over shoot a little. Then the next year I'll have a better idea what I could do.

Right there with you. 60-80 books per year pre-baby, under 30 since.

But, as you say, since I can count on bedtime now, I'm hoping to up my count next year. Something conservative, like 40 books, since we have yet another move coming up next summer.

Ken (ogi8745) | 1434 comments No goals for me
I think that defeats the purpose of reading for Pleasure.
Basically my plan is to attempt to read some good books. Sometimes it doesn't work out LOL.

Now I am thinking about it. I want to finish up some series I have been reading

Marty (martyjm) | 310 comments Ken, i like goals, but they don't have to be numeric! Another worthy goal for me is to work in some classic/literary works each year and some books or professional development. I read for lots of different purposes although mainly for fun.

message 14: by Helen (new)

Helen I'd set 70 but changed it to 80, will reach that with current book & Christmas Mystery. I read for pleasure but have counted my book total each year anyway. With GR it's just a bit more in your face.
