Sandy (stigard) 27.5 (I didn't finish A Confederacy of Dunces). I intend to eventually read many more of these.

6 seems like a low number since many of these are typically read in grade school/high school. I wonder if the BBC meant 'most people' in Britain or if they were including other countries. The whole thing is a bit random.

message 52: by cindy (new)

cindy | 48 comments I have read 31 items from the list.
But IMHO that was not a very good list. What is #4 is Complete Works of Shakespeare compared with #98 Hamlet?
Or #33 Chronicles of Narnia to #36 tLtWatW?

message 53: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 1 comments just 21 -- is this the big read list?

message 54: by Cecilia (new)

Cecilia (cissygold) I did this for Facebook and it really pissed people off. WHY? I don't know.

I have read 74 books on the list.

message 55: by Persephone (new)

Persephone | 146 comments 14 - but many of them on the "to read" list..

message 56: by Martha (new)

Martha | 1 comments I've read 46, but it is a really odd list. 'The DaVinci Code'? I did read it, but what is it doing on a list with 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Anna Karenina'? Strange!

message 57: by Tracy (new)

Tracy | 36 comments 42 for me!

message 58: by Amber (new)

Amber | 76 comments 15

message 59: by Tristen (new)

Tristen | 60 comments I've read 37 so far! (counting Harry Potter and Narnia as one each)

message 60: by Becca (new)

Becca 16 but many are on my to read list

message 61: by Tayla36 (new)

Tayla36 | 274 comments I've read 24
and it's not likely to go any higher. I don't see any of the others on this list on my T-B-R shelf, and I read mostly fantasy and scifi.

message 62: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Wuchner | 57 comments I read 28... not too shabby... better than 6... They need to have a list of Spanish and Latin American literature.

message 63: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Duffy (kathleenduffy) 14. Crap. Half of these I've been wanting to read but have never gotten around to. Time to get started on that! (Or not, because I have other things that I have to read right now for school.. but maybe this summer!)

message 64: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 15 comments I've read 40. There were a couple I couldn't remember if I'd read or not, since I may have read them in school, so I didn't count them.

message 65: by Sue (new)

Sue Slayton | 27 comments 17 for me. Many of these books are in my library...does that count for anything? LOL...MAYBE someday I'll read them. Several, I've started, but just couldn't get into them enough to finish.

message 66: by Alison (new)

Alison G. (agriff22) | 543 comments 11... but hopefully after this year it will be a lot more. this year is my year of reading classics. hopefully tomorrow i will start on number 12 :)

message 67: by lisa, Questioner (new)

lisa (cravescoffee32) | 286 comments Mod
I've read 26 of those. It'll be 27 because I'll be teaching Emma this fall. One of my favorite books on this list is Crime and Punishment by Dostoeyevsky. That book is amazing! Books I've read that I didn't like at all: Jude the Obscure by Hardy and Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. No one will ever convince me to pick up War and Peace after Anna Karenina.

message 68: by Kate (new)

Kate | 251 comments 39. This is a pretty random assortment of titles.

message 69: by Tim (new)

Tim Weakley | 396 comments 34 for me

message 70: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (morgantina) 37. Agree too with the randomness.

message 71: by Finn (new)

Finn (music_finn) | 350 comments I've read 42... (though a few are whole series, so seems unfair to count them as one book!!) Have had this as one of my TBR lists for a while now... have only read 3 more since I last checked though.

╟ ♫ Tima ♪ ╣ ♥ (tsunanisaurus) 35 for me. Following suit with everyone else who has mentioned what strange titles they are. Not to mention that several are actual combinations of entire series, making the total much higher, haha

message 73: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl 53-ish. It's hard to give myself full credit for an entire group - like the complete works of Shakespeare. I've read a lot, but I don't know if I can claim all. And I read about half the HArry Potter series. Actually, I think through the 4th book.

message 74: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 13, 2012 06:37AM) (new)

*chuckle* I get 6 in the first ten alone, plus most of the Bible.
In total I've read 35 fully.
Throw in half the Narnia's saga, and I've made big dent into Shakespeare's plays (haven't tried his poetry though).
I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath, so I'll get to dock another one yet :D
Interesting list. Many of those are in my TBR already. Though some are puzzling. Maybe it's some kind of most read list?

Cecilia wrote: "I did this for Facebook and it really pissed people off. WHY? I don't know.

Holly Molly! That's some reading

message 75: by Sarah. B (new)

Sarah. B 28 for me :-)

message 76: by Oriana (new)

Oriana Van Vlaanderen | 55 comments I've read 15. Some are on my to-read list, but the reason I only read 15 is because I preferred to read other books from the authors listed here. I believe it's easier to judge a book or author that way. That way I can slink around the hype.

message 77: by Carol, Group Read Organizer (new)

Carol (kawie1) | 449 comments Mod
38! I didn't think I'd have read so many. Nice!

message 78: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Hale (kahale) | 374 comments 62 - there are many on the list I would like to read.

message 79: by Robert (new)

Robert | 7 comments 19 books from this list

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Paige Hamlin (rachelpaigehamlin) 12. Although, I'm only 15, so a lot of these books have not been at my level until the last few years. I'll get around to them at some point.

message 81: by Summer (new)

Summer | 237 comments 17 (although I only read the first Harry Potter book and felt no inclination to start the second).

In other news, why are there so many Jane Austen novels on this list? >_> *Agrees with Molly about randomness*

message 82: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (gruton) 16 a bunch I never would have read if they weren't required in school.

message 83: by Jason (new)

Jason Oliver 24 of the book. I'm 26 years old. Don't know if that is good or bad.

message 84: by Beth S. (new)

Beth S. | 31 comments 15, I have tried a couple of these but couldn't make it through. I do have a Tale of Two Cities on my ipad now ready to read.

message 85: by Robert (new)

Robert | 7 comments 14 books I read

message 86: by Deb (new)

Deb I have read 31 on the list! Feels good to know I have read that many off your list!

message 87: by Kimberley (new)

Kimberley | 28 comments 46. Not too bad I think. Many were during school though and not selected by me. Nice list - gives me some more to put on the "to read" shelf. thanks

message 88: by Andrea (new)

Andrea 25 so far, striving for 50. Of this list I've only read 2 this year.

message 89: by janet (new)

janet | 8 comments 56.5 i am half way done with war and peace and my goal is to finish it by the end of the year. I read a little bit of it between every book i read.

message 90: by Greg (new)

Greg | 48 comments I have read 8 of these books, it'd probably be 20 if I had applied myself in high school. I own at least a dozen more though.

message 91: by Joe (new)

Joe (joewig) | 106 comments I've read 27 and 10 more are on my TBR List. This from a BBC perspective though.

message 92: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 4 comments I counted 39 as read, but some are from 40 years ago and I barely remember them.
It does seem random, but some of my favorite books are on there including my all time favorite from my childhood, The Secret Garden! I'll have to make an effort to read more of these.

message 93: by Susan (new)

Susan (chlokara) | 846 comments I have read 60 books, and have not been able to get through the several of the others. I really disliked quite a few of the books on the list. Who selected them?

message 94: by Dami (new)

Dami | 1 comments I have read 9 of the books and almost finished a 10th

message 95: by Alison (new)

Alison G. (agriff22) | 543 comments 16 with at least 2 more on he list for this year

message 96: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliemdobson) I've read about 55.

message 97: by Connie (new)

Connie Faull | 611 comments 10 read but about 30 of them are on my shelves or on my kindle TBR.

message 98: by Yulia (new)

Yulia Tsinko (yulnev) Valerie wrote: "I've read 34 too! But quite a few more are on my TBR list. Very interesting that the BBC thought most had only read 6. Seems like most have read more than that."

34 seems to be magic number=)

As for most people have only read 6 - it's likely correct, as here, on Goodreads (and especially in a 50 books a year group;) we are a very biased sample. We actually read. A lot.=)

message 99: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Bennett (ytbennett) | 33 comments I've read 45 from the list.
