Twilight World by Poul Anderson fits as far as I can tell, not much info on it here or elsewhere. Maybe one of the covers seems familiar?

If I remember, it had the word "Twilight" in the title (which, in today's context, will explain why I am battling to get past every search due to the Stephenie Meyer books!)
