Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I'm just curious what everyone has plan to read to start off the new year toward their yearly reading goals.

Happy New Year everyone. I've just started A Crown of Swords. Also want to read The Path of Daggers and Among Others. Hoping to move house so not sure whether it'll pan out.

message 3: by Nimethnimora (new)

Nimethnimora Reading A.S. Byatt's Ragnarok at the moment. Planning on working through the Malazan series after that. I've already finished Gardens of the Moon, so I'll start January with Deadhouse Gates

message 4: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 124 comments More than I read last month. ;-)

Working on Weber's Torch of Freedom right now. After that, it's my book club's selection, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. Then, some of the fine books gathering dust on my "to read" shelves... maybe some Robin Hobb or C. S. Friedman, since I'm on book 3 of a trilogy by each of them.

Happy New Year, all!

message 5: by Sue-Mari (new)

Sue-Mari (suekieza) currently reading "The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1)" and "A Crown of Swords (Wheel of Time, #7)" :D

message 6: by Evilynn (new)

Evilynn | 106 comments I read The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There already. Better start the year with something excellent and hope the rest follow suit? ;)

I'm currently reading Wool Omnibus, while waiting for A Memory of Light to be released. I'm looking forward to finally reading the conclusion to The Wheel of Time!

message 7: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) I finished Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan on the 1st! =) It's a really good book. Another one of those new author finds that are popping out of the woodwork.

message 8: by Chris (new)

Chris (axionsalvo) A Clash of Kings is what I am starting with this year.

message 9: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Ghost Story and am mere moments away from starting Cold Days, the latest from Jim Butcher.

After that I'm thinking it'll be time to start my Tolkien reread with, of course, The Silmarillion.

message 10: by Ashley Carter (new)

Ashley Carter I'm currently reading The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. #1 in the Lightbringer series

message 13: by Kevin (new)

message 14: by William (new)

William | 9 comments A Memory of Light of course!

message 15: by DavidO (last edited Jan 06, 2013 09:41AM) (new)

DavidO (drgnangl) The Crystal Cave (Arthurian Saga, #1) by Mary Stewart

The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks

The Pink Fairy Book by Andrew Lang - These get fairly repetitive after a while.

Wool Omnibus (Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey

The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson - Still plunking away on this one (was reading it last month too), stuck in the middle with nothing of interest happening except that I know dread the parts about the girl as she is becoming rather unlikable to me.

message 16: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Just wrapped up Cold Days and now it's time for The Silmarillion -- it's been entirely too long since I last reread Tolkien. (And, given that it's a pick this month, the timing is convenient.)

The Way of Kings has it's rather tiresome parts but I think it's worth trying to finish it. What I hated most with it was that some characters were so ridiculously good that I wanted to puke. But it's still worth it. Looking forward to the next book.

message 18: by Luan (new)

Luan Costa I'm reading Morrigan's Cross and then The Silmarillion

message 19: by Beth (new)

Beth Johnson (planetarypan) The current book is The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King .

Then the plan is (depending on when the library supplies me):

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1) by Terry Goodkind (reread but when first published)
Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1) by John Scalzi
The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks
Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin

That should totally kill my month off. LOL

message 20: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21 comments A Memory of Light (Wheel of Time, #14; A Memory of Light, #3) by Robert Jordan . I may have to take a few sick days to tackle this one ASAP!

message 21: by Mary (new)

Mary | 4 comments The Forge of Darkness (The Kharkanas Trilogy #1) by Steven Erikson

Despite not having much time to read lately I'm very excited about this book! To mix it up I'm also reading Maps and Legends.

message 22: by Nigel (new)

Nigel | 10 comments I just finished Toby Neighbors Series The Five Kingdoms, fantastic read...can't wait for Loric to be released. Now I need to decide what to read off my kindle list, but I am also working my way through the last J. M. Auel book, I love her writing but it is very heavy with the descriptions.

message 23: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments Like everyone else, the one and only A Memory of Light.

message 24: by Sean (new)

Sean (stessmer) Just finished Raymond Feist's Magician: Master and now I'm reading Silverthorn. I'm also working on Witness by Whittaker Chambers.

message 25: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished Towers of Midnight so I have finally caught up, for today anyway. (curse you Portugal and your slowness!)
I went in knowing it would most likely spend a considerable amount of time setting up for A Memory of Light and that's what I got... plus a LOT of Perrin, which felt really unnecessary as he's mostly inconsequencial in the grand scheme of things. I wasn't in love with the alternating timelines either, and while I did enjoy the book, I excepted it to be quite a bit better than it ended up being. Feel free to read my full review here.

I'll be reading A Memory of Light as soon as I can get my hands on the book, and New Spring in the meantime.

Don't give up on Way of Kings! I took several breaks but once I stuck with it, it was soooo worth it! Fantastic Read and I CANNOT wait for the next one.

message 27: by Steve (new)

Steve (steview84) I started the Mistborn trilogy this week, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the first book. Just finished rereading Name of the Wind, and will probably reread Wise Man's Fear after I finish with Mistborn. looks like an exciting year of reading ahead of me!!

I went in with people saying it was better than The Gathering Storm, got a ton of Perrin and a seriously frakked up time line, so I was rather disappointed in TOM. I'm 140 pages through AMOL and so far it's a lot better than TOM.

Yeah, I've heard all sorts of great thing about AMOL, though I'll probably only get my copy on friday :(

AMOL seems to be exactly what I'd expect after a 800+ page setup. In a way I'm glad TOM is what it is, that way we get to see the series go out with a bang. Given how long it took to get to the end, I think that's just well deserved.

Steve, what a good start to the year.

I agree, Mistborn, so far, is my favorite read. Have you read
The Way of Kings yet?

message 32: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Just started The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. Seems like it will be a fun read :)

message 33: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished New Spring and... I guess my expectations were a bit too high for what it ended up being. The concept was amazing, but not the execution.
It has some good moments, but when you get a short story's worth of content out of a novel that stands at over 400 pages... yeah. Worth it for people who absolutely need to read everything WoT, but that's about it. Feel free to read my full review here.

My copy of A Memory of Light will probably be delivered tomorrow, so I'll be dead to the world for a few days following that. Can't wait!

message 34: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 208 comments Blood and Bone A Novel of the Malazan Empire by Ian C. Esslemont and cant wait, OST was like AWESOME :P

message 35: by Megan (new)

Megan Donnelly | 7 comments Just started "The Map of Time". It looks like a steampunk/fantasy surrounding H.G Wells. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

message 36: by Michele (new)

Michele | 85 comments So....I'm re-reading The Black Prism in preparation for reading the sequel, but I'm having the same difficulty I had the first time around: I keep getting Gavin and Dazen confused.

message 37: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Faerlind (sjfaerlind) Like so many others I just started a Memory of Light. I've been waiting 15 years for this book :)

message 38: by Tara (new)

Tara (tarabookreads) I just finished reading Shadowfever and started reading The Way of Shadows. I enjoyed The Black Prism from the same author so I hope this one is as good or better..

message 39: by Carl (new)

Carl My uncle has given me Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny to read. Says it's his favorite book of all time.

message 40: by Mike (new)

Mike Fisher I just finished Eden and it was spectacular. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves adventure, horror, suspense, or paranormal. It has a little bit of everything and I can't wait for the rest of the series.

message 41: by Anna-louise (last edited Jan 11, 2013 05:38AM) (new)

Anna-louise | 81 comments I've just finished reading the last Mercy Thompson book River MarkedI highly recommend these to UF lovers, its a must. I'm hoping to read the book club reads. As i'm still on my Urban Fantasy/YA kick at the moment i've started reading Beautiful Creatures which is entertaining enough :)

message 42: by Barbm1020 (new)

Barbm1020 I reread The Hobbit (and saw the film - loved it!). Then I read Jim Butcher's Dresden Files #11, http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34... which has a wonderful array of tributes to popular magical and horror movies and books.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Finally got around to reading Inheritance and it seems that this one is as mediocre as the first 3. But I really need to know how it ends.
After that I'm thinking of starting The Way of Kings as I loved everything else Sanderson wrote. I have high expectations of this one.

message 44: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 17 comments The last 3 books of the Wheel of Time hopefully! I love what Sanderson has done for the series and am refreshing my memories as I get to A Memory of Light

message 45: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished The Silmarillion and am going straight into The Children of Húrin -- I'll be curious to see how this version of the tale differs from that found in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth.

havent yet read the Unfinished Tales, but I loved The Children of Húrin :P

message 47: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António Just finished A Memory of Light and unfortunately I can't say I particularly liked it. It felt rushed at times and overall I don't think like this is the finale such a long series deserved. Feel free to read my full review here.

Next up I'll be reading The Pear Shaped Man and Old Man's War.

message 48: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 117 comments Just finished One Grave at a Time and now I've started Dragon's Milk.

message 49: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 7 comments I am on book 9 of Malazan Book of the Fallen. I will finish 9 and 10 then I will re-read Wheel of Time. I have Memory of Light and I want to read it so badly but I will restrain myself and take my time to enjoy this series that I have been following for the last 17 years.

Adrianna [SypherLily] (sypherlily) | 59 comments I just finished Opal, and I'm reading these ones at the same time, may finish them this month: Les Misérables, Days of Blood & Starlight, and Wizard's First Rule
