SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

I am looking for a series I heard described in a book panel or in passing, and for the life of me all I have is a vague description, no title or author or anything.

All I have is this: the primary antagonistic group are witches. The series uses Medieval folklore as its basis for witches - they are cruel, malevolent, corrupting, and will manipulate and curse people.

Sorry, Rechan. I can't think of anything similar to that either. Any idea of the time frame when the series started or if the author was male or female?
