Gjoubert the book was just ok...I heard about the movie so I decided to read book first....it was just ok to me.

Eva-Marie Nevarez The book sucks. It's *almost* the worst book I've ever read. Totally over rated and a hot mess in short.

Graciela Bonilla Honestly i don't with you guys. I think this book was amazing. This book is based on the movie precious. I believe this book would of been more interesting if you first watched the movie. Precious is an African American girl that has a really hard life. Then she starts attending a school where they help her in her education and life. Its also really sad at the end , at first i didnt get this book but once i saw the movie there were so many bad things in her life. Its something that anyone can compare their life with.

Graciela Bonilla whats your opinion ?

Marilyn I liked it.. just not as much as I had hoped to. I understood why Sapphire chose to write it the way she did and it worked for me. It's worth the read though.

Jenny Definitely worth the read. I liked it. Have not seen the movie. I don't really think I want to after reading the book. The book is very raw and goes into detail about Sapphire's life with her mother before she started going to the school. Graciela (above) says that the girl had a really hard life. I would say that's being nice! This girls life was HORRENDOUS.

One warning, tho. If you don't like vulgar language don't read it. There is a lot but it wouldn't be true to life if it didn't.

Yes it's good. Watch the movie first though (or not, I did and the book went down even better that way).

Marcy I thought it was okay; not my favorite book ever but I've also read worse. I agree with Agostino, though -- I recommend watching the movie adaptation first, partly because it's at times poorly-written for effect. It made sense as a narrative technique, but for me made it a bit difficult to get through, which is where having seen the film first came in handy. :)

Suzette Salmon I do not think the book was poorly written. However, I do think it was written the way the main character spoke because of her lack of education. That is what made it a hard read. I enjoyed the movie more and it also helps you to understand the book.

Marcy I guess that's what I mean, Suzette -- with Precious being the narrator, it's written how a person in shoes would write, which is not well, especially not at the outset. It's been a while since I read it, but if I remember, it starts out with a LOT of spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, etc. It's true to her character and, as you said, hard to read.

I personally didn't find it hard to read at all. Sure there were lots of intentionally left in errors, but they were intuitive to understand in my opinion.

Thinking of something "hard to read", Clockwork Orange... now that was some hard modified language to read. I actually gave up on that one haha.

Suzette Salmon The hardest book I tried to read (and gave up), was Beloved, OMG! The movie was even harder to understand, LOL~
