2013 Goodreads Challenge

I'm not doing a challenge this year. Last year, I was plowing through books in the early part of the year just to make sure I'd reach that "magic" number. By the end of the year, I wasn't enjoying reading as much. This year, I'm going to read what I want, when I want, if I want. I may even go back to reading some magazines I had read before but gave up.

Paula: No reason to feel "puny" -- everyone reads at a different pace, and sometimes people have a lot going on in their lives. There are some years I've read fewer than 50 books. The most I've ever read in one year was 219 -- but that was before I had a home computer. I don't see myself hitting 200 again any time soon.

I want to enjoy the reading I do and not feel pressured. I've always been a fast reader, but come summer time, I tend to slow down quite a bit.
Good luck to all who joined the challenge no matter your goal.

Thanks Heather. I do admire people who can read a lot of books. : )

I felt pressured to spend most of today reading when the GR meter rudely informed me that I was already one book behind. Naturally, I had to remedy that before the football game came on tonight.
On to book two...
On to book two...

LOL!

Good luck, kaye and Naomi!
Five books down, working on book six, so "on track" so far this month.

Well, I'm still a book behind so far this year, but I'm sure I'll get ahead eventually. Maybe... : D

At your current pace, you're 12 books (6%) behind :(
But I will get there!!!
My goal is 60 books. I am 2 ahead of my goal. I hope I keep the pace up. I sometimes slow down during the summer months.

14 of 125 (11%)
Great work, you're 3 books (2%) ahead of schedule.
Three books ahead at least makes me feel like I can breath. LOL Admiting I've been reading under 300 pages books, trying to build up a cushion before I tackle more of the A Song of Ice and Fire Series.

Kari, I think I need to tackle a few novellas and shorter books to build up a cushion, lol. I am in awe of all those who are already ahead of their goal, but keep reminding myself that I started out slow the two previous years, and that I did more reading last year during the summer -- when favorite TV programs weren't a distraction.
I'd like to work in a couple of the cozies piling up in Mount TBR this month, but also want to participate in some group reads. One, Northanger Abbey, is only 211 pages and a reread -- which, in theory, means it should be a bit of a faster read.
Two other group reads, however...
One, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, is just over 300 pages. I've wanted to read this for some time, and it looks like it could be a fast read once I get into it, but then -- you never know with "literary fiction." Reading a 300-page book in 2-4 days should be a no-brainer, but again, you never know.
The second is the unabridged The Count of Monte Cristo and weighs in at 875 pages. Yeah. Really want to read it, but know from my experience last fall with Anna Karenina that it will take at least two weeks, maybe three -- and that's me being optomistic, lol. The fact it is for a group read is some incentive (moral support), but honestly don't know if I'll feel up to it. Decisions, decisions...

Thanks, Kari -- I'll have to think about that. I actually have that story, in a book that also contains The Hound of the Baskervilles. According to my edition, "Scarlet" is only 130 pages. That could easily be accomplished in one weekend, I'm sure.
Well, I am now officially four books behind. I am definitely going on a romance and/or mystery binge as soon as I finish the current book, before picking up any more classics or lit fic.
How's everyone else doing so far this year?

I'm in the "awesome" category - way ahead (something like 20 books ahead). Sorry, but you asked :)
