Books I Loathed discussion

I have noticed some comments about this in other threads, but, please, sooth my soul and tell me exactly why you loath this book :-D

I do. I liked the beginning, with the religious stuff and all, but from the boat trip it all went incredibly boring, disgusting and total waste of time... I don't understand how anyone can like it, or why it has won anything. I wouldn't even have published the darned thing.

Interesting, I'm the exact opposite. I found the beginning boring, and had to force myself through it, but once he was on the boat I was totally hooked.

I ended up loving it. *shrugs*

I loved the whole thing. And the ending... wow. I had to go back and rethink everything from a new perspective after that. It completely changed the rest of the book. It's not often that a book can do that (Fight Club maybe). And while not much happened on the boat, it was beautifully written and had a character I could really like. That's good enough for me.

I couldn't get through the first 100 pages....and I tried....3 times....It was a combination of the writing, the slow-to-develop story line, and the lack of development of the concept....I loaned it out to friends who now have disowned me....I no longer to speak to the one person I gave it to who claims it is now her all-time favorited book.

I'm not interested in reading Life of Pi but I'd love to hear confirmation that yes, it's yet another Coelhite Law of Attraction p.o.s

Ugh. I think it was the hype that raised my expectations. I was well written, I'll give him that.

I am with you! I have been listening to the audio and wondering for several cds now why I am still listening to it. I've hit a glitch with the audio and am unsure if I will bother finishing. I would only be doing it so that it's completed. But I find it incredibly boring! I thought it would be much more compelling. By the third disc, he still isn't on the boat! And then when he was, it was significantly less interesting than I expected. I'm finally off the boat so it's getting slightly better, but I really would only be finishing to say I finished it....

I am unsure whether I liked the book or not. I liked the start, hated the middle and end. Thought it was horrifying and feel like I'm the only dumb reader cos I **spoiler** totally missed the metaphor of the tiger, I thought it was real . . until a friend told me what whas what, I had to go back re-read the book, totally changed my impression. Still hated the middle, so I can understand those that hated the entire book. But i liked the first part and the random observations he made.

"Life of Pi"

I don't want to start one of those "this book isn't what I expected..." comments. However, whatever I expected, from reading the back cover, the book discussions in the paper, etc... this one just didn't deliver. I'm not sure if it is a metaphor, a parable, (are they really that different?) whatever...

I feel like there is more meaningful literature out there (than "Life of Pi") about the nature of making a good choice (in the eyes of God or any higher power) when you could have easily made a bad one.

I finished it when it came out. A friend gave it to me as a gift. Seemed like Yann Martel wrote it to feel clever but missed the mark. The 'twist' just wasn't very exciting. Same story whether it's a tiger or a man. Doesn't matter. Still a long boring book. I think self-indulgent. I could imagine Martel with his hand over his little mouth snickering... "oh wow.... this is gonna be great! this will blow their minds....i am so smart....."
