Katniss, in my opinion, got lucky throughout the entire story. I enjoyed the Hunger Games, but not so much Katniss Everdeen.
Twilight, hate it. Despise it. My girl loves it. I have to put up with it. Nuff said.
Now, Terra. The story caught my attention. Terra is a survivor and isn't annoying. I've heard about the rich not caring about the poor, but she didn't let that affect her. She was helpless at times, but she doesn't let that bring her down. A specific time would be right before she runs into Adam, she was tough all the way.
Terra has got to be one of my favorites...other than Holly Short from the Artemis Fowl series. :D

I love a kick-ass heroine. ^_^

Sorry to say, but I just can't include Bella as a "heroine." She never really does anything or stands up for herself. Just gets tossed around and does what her man says.
Anyone read Wild Magic? Or any of The Immortals series. Daine is a cool heronie :)
My all time heroine is Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes, I can totally include her cause there were books too!).

OMG YES HERMIONE. How could I forget her? I think this graphic has always summed my feelings on the matter pretty well, hehe.

I just got the first Vampire Academy book! Should be arriving soon. Of course, I have about a zillion other books to get through, too, but I've heard really good things about the series so, here's hoping I end up adding Rose to my list, too!

I adore Hermione too! Love the role model of girl who is unflinchingly brainy. :) I didn't much admire Bella until she became a mother. I think her maternal love for her daughter was a lot more believable than the romantic stuff with Edward.
A YA heroine that I really liked growing up is Meg Murry from the "Wrinkle in Time" books! I really need to go back and reread those.
Again, not really YA lit, more like historical fiction, but I'm a big fan of Isabel Allende ("The House of the Spirits"). Most of her books have strong female protagonists, or several generations of them, dealing with tragic situations. Usually there is no clear right or wrong in the stories, so you never get the satisfaction of seeing the character you hate getting squelched. Sadly, it's much like life!
Can't wait to see what book 2 holds for my new friend Terra Rhodon. :)
You can't swing a cat (not that you'd want to...) without hitting a young teen protagonist in this generation of young adult fiction. When I set out writing TERRA, I was worried that she would have too many mimicked characteristics of the other characters listed above, and struggled really hard to find a balance of admirable qualities with realistic ones, as well as a personality that is entirely her own.
Who is your favorite book heroine, and why? Or your least favorite, and why? What qualities do you think a protagonist should have?
