Robin (robinpickell) | 421 comments I started reading the web manhwa Orange Marmalade, which is going to get 5 STARS & I haven't finished it yet. It's the cutest thing I have read in years. I also started The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, but haven't got past chapter one. But it's funny, which I like.

Lastly, I finally got my birthday present - Dark Serpent. I cannot wait to read it, but first I have to finish the 2 above!

ree | 24 comments Hello everyone, I was hoping to find some reading recommendations. I'm looking for a book that is either fantasy or historical fiction. Something that'll consume me, with excellent writing. (But light?)

I started 'Graceling', but read reviews that it was a book packed with feminist views? I thought it started out good, but I don't want to get sucked into a huge story with strong feminist overtones.

Help! :)

message 1807: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Nyree - I really enjoyed Graceling. I think if you liked the beginning, you'll like the rest of the book as well. I think the feminist views are not overwhelming. If you don't mind a spoiler, basically (view spoiler) Otherwise, she is just a strong female character. A lot of people take issue with the concept enclosed in the spoiler, but there is so much more to the story.

For a recommendation: The Goodreads Choice Award winner last year for historical fiction was The Light Between Oceans. I have not read it yet, but have heard great reviews and have it on my TBR list.

Thank you Kristie, that spoiler wasn't such a huge deal, at least not to me. You've sold me on the idea of reading Graceling all the way through. I really like the feel of the book so far, it's very realistic and engaging.

I'll also look into the 'The light Between Oceans'. Thank you! :)

Lianne (liannevanroekel) I finished Fight Club and Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, both five star books. Fight Club is a complex book with a misleading length. With 218 pages it looks like an easy read, but the writing style is quite difficult. Once I got used to it, I loved it. I knew about the plot twist, because I saw the movie first, but liked it nonetheless.

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore was a cute and quick read, which I needed after reading Fight Club. The characters were all very likable and and the mystery was interesting. The book refers to authors, books and modern technology, which makes it refreshing. It was quite geeky, but I like that (a lot).

Although these books are very different, I would recommend them both.

Right now I'm reading Speaker for the Dead, the second book in the Ender's Saga, and Mockingjay, so I can finally finish the Hunger Games series.

I've been looking for some good westerns to read. Thank you! It didn't even occur to me to look up the Longmire series. I don't really know if it would be considered a western, but it's set in that beautiful country! Did you watch the show's first season? We loved it.

message 1833: by Anna (new)

Anna Michelle (michellebelle925) | 6 comments I'm currently reading the Artemis Fowl series. Some of my summer reading is dedicated to reading the books I "should have" read as a kid, but I was too busy reading Jane Austen and Charles Dickens to pick up any children's literature.

message 1834: by Jillian (new)

Jillian Eslami I am currently reading Subway Dancer and Other Stories by Catherine Ryan Hyde. It is a collection of short stories. They are nice a refreshing! You know how some short stories can feel a little convoluted and like the run in circles? Well these ones don't. I love the voice she used in the first two stories, it was like someone was just talking to you, not trying to impress you with fantastic language. Just a friend. I like that in my short stories!

message 1835: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (liannevanroekel) I finished And Then There Were None, which I liked a lot, and Mockingjay, which was a bit disappointing to be honest. The ending of the book, and thus the trilogy, didn't give me enough closure. Currently I'm about halfway through Speaker for the Dead. It took me some time to get into the story, because it didn't start where Ender's Game ended, but right now I'm hooked.

I didn't realize when I bought it that it was possibly a detective series. I'm not really into those books (I used to be) but this is very good and I look forward to going back to it so that is a good sign.

I am now reading Unfettered, a short story collection by some of my favorite authors, the proceeds going to a great cause. Reading these stories is a little like visiting old friends, even reading the introduction was fun.

The Kindle Book Review describes it as "a perfect combination of romance and action.”
