Kaleb (httpwwwgoodreadscomvaron) | 97 comments NOT READ THE HOBBIT!? NOT REMEMBER IT!?

For shame! It's required reading for the certification to earn the title Writer. ;)

Seriously, you really have to read it. It's one of my favorite books.

message 302: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Peter wrote: "Set during the German occupation of Warsaw during WW2, about a family of children whose parents have been taken away."

I've read that—it also goes under the alternate title Escape From Warsaw. I thought it was really good.

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Project Gutenburg is an online service that has a catalogue of about 40,000 free ebooks. They can be read online, in HTML, or in ebook format or Kindle. You can find lots of books whose copyrights have expired. Just search it online, or, if I'm not mistaken, there may be a link here to it when you click to look for books.

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments I have to put "The Hobbit" on my to-read list... I've been wanting to read it, but my library has a tough time actually going any faster than a snails-pace when I place a hold on any of Tolkien's books.

message 305: by Annie (new)

Annie Hawthorne (curiouswren) You'll have to tell me what you think of it when you get a chance to read it, Renna! I love that book. :D

I've known for years that I do not meet the requirements to be called a true fantasy writer, Kaleb, but no one on HW seems to care... ;)

Can you imagine a world, set it to print, then have the courage to post/print your words, and exception the consequences of a bad critic, then congratulations you belong. Having not read The Hobbit, no biggy, its only the ardent ones who really care, the rest of us to like to read and talk about books with like minded individuals.

message 308: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Today I finished Studies in the Sermon on the Mount by Martyn Lloyd-Jones, which was absolutely superb...also very long. I've been working on it for months.

message 309: by [deleted user] (new)

*grins* Thanks, Peter! And believe me, I will read it... It's just one of those things that tends to slip through the cracks. -.- But! That's what this challenge is for--getting me to read all those "loose ends"!

Leah Good | 236 comments Hannah wrote: "Yes, I wrote a review...and it's free on Project Gutenburg."
Can you post a link? It's not showing up on the book page. >.< Free is always good. :)

message 311: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments I will see if this works...I'm on my tablet and haven't figured out how to do the links quite right... Let me know if it works or not.

Each book's page comes up automatically to the download page. If you click on "Bibrec" you can see links to the author page, tags for genre, and number of downloads.

You would not believe how many "essential/must read" books have fallen through the cracks of my mind, gave up along time ago worrying about what I must read, concentrated on have fun reading what I wanted not my peers - made for an interesting library. (smile with sunglasses on, got a head cold this morning)

message 315: by [deleted user] (new)

*grins knowingly* If we all just read the "classics" or what everybody else liked, we'd never discover new favorites...

message 316: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh! Finally finished reading through Peter's Angel, so that's out of the way. Now I can move on to reading some other stuff, and also move on with writing the saga!

That brings me to 10 "real" books read this year (manga excluded), which is not bad at all, considering that's more than I read last year combined, I think...

Yes! Thank you.

message 318: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments I'm halfway through "The Crossways" by Helen Martin. It's very interesting, and the only reason I put it down is because I had to go to bed last night. I have chores, so have not let myself touch it yet today...

message 319: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla I've started reading Pocahontas: True Princess by Mari Hanes. My older sister read this to me about four years ago and its been really fun to re-read.

message 320: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments I'm halfway through "Never" by J. Grace Pennington... a book that interesting and with my reading speed, I usually would be done with it in three days at the most. But life is busy and trying to make me fall over, so it's taken me way longer than usual.

message 321: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm interested in studying Pocahontas sometime. I just rewatched the Disney movie, actually... which is no doubt horribly pathetic compared to history. ;)

I've been formatting a novella today and read it in the process, so I'll be able to add that once it's up.

message 322: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I am currently reading "A Husband by Proxy". It is a very intriguing book so far.

message 323: by Shadow (new)

Shadow | 41 comments I'm still reading Crosswind. Still. I've also started On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature. :)

message 324: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Finished Home Front Girl yesterday, and wrote a review today. Jane's Fame next!

message 325: by M F (new)

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments Just started The Book of Human Skin. May put it on hold when the books I requested at the library come in, and come back to it after those, but not sure. It looks ... interesting. To be honest, I know nothing about it; my sister gave it to me secondhand.

message 326: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments I just read "Rosemary in Search of a Father" by C. N. and A. M. Williamson. It was a quick read and sweet story.

message 327: by Annie (new)

Annie Hawthorne (curiouswren) I just finished 'Among the Shadows' by L.M. Montgomery. It's a delightful little book of ghostly tales. :)

message 328: by Hannah (last edited Feb 24, 2013 06:39PM) (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments I just read "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch" by Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice. It was a quick read with a pleasant ending. I liked "Rosemary" best, though.

message 329: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Just finished "Lovey Mary" by the same author...the sequel to "Mrs. Wiggs". Three stars. Still liking Rosemary.

Mikayla Aubrey wrote: "I'm interested in studying Pocahontas sometime. I just rewatched the Disney movie, actually... which is no doubt horribly pathetic compared to history. ;)

This ones rely good if you want to read about what actually happened, the author really did her research and wrote it rely well. She also wrote one on Pocahontas son Tomas that's really good.

message 331: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments I just finished "It Was September When We Ran Away The First Time".

message 332: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahh, y'all have been nicely busy! I'm finishing up my last formatting project today, Lord willing, so I'm hoping to read more this week. Although I did promise a certain someone (who may or may not be reading this thread...) that I would write...

message 333: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments I haven't been busy at all. XD That book I just finished wasn't a very big book, and it had large-ish print. XD

I do hope to finish "Never" and "Dandelion Fire" by the end of the month...

message 334: by [deleted user] (new)

*grins at Renna*

message 335: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments *grins back* I also have promised certain someones that I would write, actually...

message 336: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, oh, oh! Write what? I should do the, dare I say it, Red Rain sequel...

message 337: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments *bounces excitedly at the word 'sequel'*

I'm working on a...erm...*looks around*...collection of short fiction. Drabbles, poems, songs, and short stories. I kinda don't want word to get out when I self-publish it. I don't really want anyone but close friends and family members buying it, because--to put it bluntly--I'm afraid of what anyone else will think. XD

message 338: by [deleted user] (new)

o.O Well, I'm close enough, so you'll let Aubrey see, right? If she promises not to tell? ^_^

message 339: by Theodora (last edited Feb 25, 2013 07:44AM) (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments D'awww. XD Of course, if you like. I'll pro'lly leave messages on Skype for people or what-not. :) I'm almost finished, just a few more poems to write and some editing to do. Then while my two test-readers are going through it, I'm going to be fiddling with cover design. It won't be at all as professional as your novels, though.

message 340: by [deleted user] (new)

*grunts* We're not here to compare our stuff. I just wanna see! Yay! ^_^

message 341: by Theodora (new)

Theodora R. R. (the_homesick_dreamer) | 122 comments I wasn't comparing anything, just warning. ;)

*ish happy you're excited* :)

Have you ever tried book roulette - here's how it goes, select ten books, place them under a towel and randomly select one ( to make it more interesting place a book you would never have dreamed of reading into the mix). It works for me when i come to a reading impasse.

message 344: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla I'm reading a book on William Wilberforce now that I've finished Pocahontas.

Ha! That sounds like an interesting idea. I will have to try it at some point. What I really should read is
Scaramouche, but I keep getting sidetracked by other books.

message 346: by [deleted user] (new)

That does sound fun, Peter!

Ohh, William Wilberforce is someone I want to study sometime. Love the movie Amazing Grace!

message 347: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Scaramouche was lots of fun, though it takes several chapters to get into the action. Pay close attention to those first chapters anyway, because they matter later on. That was a great book! I really need to read the sequel.

Oh, thanks for that tip. Knowing that someone else has read and enjoyed it helps me feel motivated to read it!

M F (fianaigecht) | 247 comments I finished The Book Of Human Skin. One of the more gruesome books I've read recently ... but it was good anyway. Really made you consider right and wrong and stuff.

Now I've started on The Bell Jar. Because you know. Keeping it cheery over here. Ummm.
