Rob Godfrey | 86 comments At the risk of being excommunicated (or worse):

I was very happy with my Kindle (the one with the tiny keyboard) and have 90 odd books on it (and I've read them all).
But then I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 7.0 free with a monthly phone deal in November. I decided I finally needed a phone after loathing them for years. The free tablet was a surprise.
Out of curiosity I downloaded the kindle Android app. Well, now i'm doing all my reading on the Galaxy. The screen is brighter, the text crisper and of course all the illustrations are in colour (I just got Barry Cunliffe's Britain Begins and its quite something). I like being able to turn the page with a flick of a finger too.
Sad to say it makes the Kindle look old and clunky - and I've only had it since March 2011. Carphone Warehouse are still doing the deal in the UK too - if you haven't got a kindle yet, this is the way I'd go.
I feel a bit of a traitor but it is a cost-effective way of getting into e-books if you happen to need a phone.

Thanks.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lol.

You'll have to do the chopping, Michael.

Only Simon and I have delete powers. ;)

Well, I reckon, each to their own.

I know several groupites have mentioned they like reading on their iPad or tablet or pc or whatever.

I think the important thing is the love of reading, not the device.

I believe some people still even use *gasp* PAPER!!!

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Yea I do read on the ipad. Been juggling an audiobook on the PC, one on the ipad, one on the kindle and a hardback.

I iz proud :)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Gadget juggling is a wonderful skill. It's important to keep the heaviest one in the air the longest, this then extends your juggling time.

I find my Kindle Keyboard is ideal for reading books without illustrations, tables or pictures, however all my technical books are read on my iPad.

Lorraine | 575 comments I keep my recipe books on my tab,the pictures are better than on my kk or pw,but i also read on my htc if i'm somewhere without my kindle.Gadgets just make reading easier,i also still read paper books.

message 7: by Kath (new)

Kath | 1233 comments i have to read some of the ebooks on my tablet cos they are epub from the elibrary and can't be read on kindle. consequently i have got used to reading on it and so i also now tend to read kindle books on it too. of course not good in bright sunlight, or reading before bedtime cos of the backlight. the battery isnt that great either so the kindle will always have a big place in my life :) but yeah the two gadgets do have their own merits!

message 8: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I would say 60% of my reading is done on my iPad, 20% on the Kindle Paperwhite and 20% on my Nexus 7.

All the devices have their strong & weak points, even if it's just price. For example I'm less inclined to take my expensive iPad out and about to places it might get broken or nicked, when I can take the Nexus or KPW. The KPW excels on the beach or the plane, or places where you may not have power for days, or - dare I say it - if you are desperate to read in the bath (it's much cheaper to replace than a £600 iPad if you drop it!)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments The only reason my Kindle wins out above all other things I own is the battery time (although not at the minute) and the fact it doesn't hurt my eyes as much

Kate Baggott (httpswwwgoodreadscomkate_baggott) | 104 comments I also got a Galaxy 2 for Christmas and it had to go into the shop on 2 January for repairs that will take 10 days in total. But it was a good week.

message 11: by Sara (new)

Sara Boyd (saraboydauthor) | 1211 comments The only reason my Kindle wins is because... I ONLY have a kindle (no tablets or fancy phones) and I don't read books on my computer.

message 12: by Katy (last edited Jan 06, 2013 10:42AM) (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I have a Kindle Keyboard and a Kindle fire. I use my KK for personal reading (which is about 90% of the time) because it doesnt hurt my eyes, and my kindle fire for uni books with diagrams

message 13: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Yep! I read on both Kindle and iPad but prefer reading on my Kindle as the iPad hurts my eyes if I read for too long

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments My phone is not the sort to read on, but it serves it's purpose which is to send text messages to a few people (parents, sister, nephew, niece#1 & about half a dozen other friends) Phone works fine & I don't intend replacing it until it stops working.

Kindle Keyboard to read normal books on, laptop for some books (cloud reader)
I'm debating between a baby kindle and kindle fire for a backup to my kindle. The only thing against the fire is the touch screen which I'm not keen on.

Shuddhanara (scotstevie) Love my kindle...doesn't feel like im reading from a PC screen...and distractions..its for reading books..and so much easier for holidays than packing paper books.

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 27 comments I prefer a kindle to a computer or phone screen. And for some reason I seem to read faster with the kindle than with paper.

You are like my MIL Janet, she has had 3p on her phone for longer than I have known her and so long as she has 1p on her phone she gets 5 free texts a day. She uses FIL's phone if she needs to phone or send more texts.

I need that plan!! I get a month free whenever I top up, so I top up before I go away or something when I know I might be sending more texts.

message 19: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I so rarely send texts. iMessages now, that's another matter...

message 20: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I don't have anyone to send iMessages to :( I don't even know how that works lol !

message 21: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Send them to me Lorraine!

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I don't have anyone to send iMessages to either (or anything to send iMessages from)

Rob Godfrey | 86 comments Well I wasn't struck by lightening (but I'm not looking forward to getting to those pearly gates) for my heresy.
However, the turbo on my car disintegrated on the way home from a course (cost me over £1000 so far) so I guess that was indirect punishment.
I haven't yet picked up my Kindle again. I'm still in the middle of reading Barry Cunliffe's Britan Begins though, so there's some excuse...
