Bob Craton | 24 comments All of us want to promote our books and a lot of effort on Goodreads goes toward tagging/liking each other's work. I suggest something a bit more serious.

As an aspiring indie author, I’ve spent a lot of time in recent months reading books by other indie writers so I can compare my work to theirs. (I admit I also have traded reviews with some of them.) I want to recommend three in particular whose work I enjoy and which really stands out from the crowd.
-
1-Vanna Smythe’s “Anniversary of the Veil” series is a complex fantasy with many characters and multiple plot-lines. (Lazy people with short attention spans can stop reading now.) The world she creates is noticeably different from most fantasies, and it’s easy to become attached to her characters. Plus, Volumes I and II both have cliff-hanger endings.

Hmm, that sounds very familiar. In fact, it is exactly how I describe my own trilogy, “The High Duties of Páçia.” Her characters, plot, and back-story are different from mine, but we definitely are in the same sub-genre. Okay, that explains why I love her story, but I’m telling you that hers is great for any fantasy fans. Of course, you have to read mine first. That’s a rule.
-
2 – Sherrie Cronin’s titles (“x0” and “y1”) may seem odd but she has mathematical explanations for them. She makes excellent use of the concept of ‘magical realism,’ a term I learned from my college professor daughter. The ‘realism’ portions are very well researched and the ‘magical’ parts are, well, magical like they are supposed to be. She creates real characters who are people you’d like to have live next door. It makes you wonder how much the fictional Zeitman family resembles the real Cronin family, but all of the others are equally vivid – heroes/heroines and villains alike. Exotic real-world settings (Nigeria in “x0” and the South Pacific in “‘y1”) add to the appeal.
-
3 – Jamie Marchant’s “The Goddess’s Choice” is another fine fantasy with a complex story and strong characters (both good and bad) set in a fresh far-from-ordinary world. It is a self-contained one volume tale although it does leave room for sequels (hopefully). Prepare to be impressed. Jamie and Vanna both have engaging romances, as does Sherrie’s “y2,” but to quote an old song, true love never runs smoothly.
-
It may seem that I’m over-praising these but keep in mind that I have weeded out dozens of books that I consider good or medium quality. I’ve already posted links to these books in earlier posts, including the one previous to this, but for convenience, here are the links again to each one’s first book:

Bob Craton | 24 comments If anyone else has favorite new authors, I invite you to mention them. You don't have to be as long-winded as I am. Naturally, we all want to mention ourselves too.

message 3: by Chloe Zola (new)

Chloe Zola | 11 comments FREE TODAY: Multimedia Memoir!

Another messy and mundane memoir exploring what "normal" means for modern American families. A string of stories that are as bizarre as they are heartwarming, Beside My Doorstep follows Zola and her split-level family as they move from house to house over the course of twenty years. Written by a young woman with an extraordinary talent for observation and compassion, Beside My Doorstep paints a picture that is both universal and deeply personal in its dysfunction, humor, tragedy, and discovery- all themes inherent in the storm of growing up.

Sherrie Cronin | 31 comments Hi Bob -- I was surprised and flattered to make your list! Like you, meeting other indie authors online has been an unexpected plus to my writing adventurers and I have read novels that range from okay to wow this is good.
Readers please note that Bob Craton and his fantasy creation make MY short list of Indie authors I've really enjoyed and please check out http://www.amazon.com/Journey-Light-D... on amazon. I also want to give a shout out to Brian Rush. His new book "Goddess Born" mixes fine political thriller with good fantasy. See http://www.amazon.com/Goddess-Born-Ta.... It's easy to review books you really enjoy, so yes you will see my posted reviews of both. Be assured that I don't know and have never met either Bob or Brian ..... although I do look forward to reading more books from both.

Dianne, I'm one of the few people who don't tweet (having been born in the late Paleolithic Era). I do have email - [email protected]

If you have any favorite indie authors, be sure to mention them.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I do regular guest author interviews on my blog:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I've also started a regular featured book slot for indie authors:

Michael, that sounds intriguing (even though I'm not a gamer). For the sake of anyone reading this (not just me), how does done apply for an interview and submit a book for consideration?

message 9: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Send me a pm and we can sort something out. I have quite a backlog for interviews (although if you're happy to wait then we can sort that out), but I do have a slot next week for a featured book.

Hi Michael -- Sherrie here --- we've featured each other a while ago on our blogs. I've got my third novel coming out this week-end -- if Bob isn't interested, any chance I could grab that slot? pm me if yes.

message 11: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Hi Sherrie - Bob's already been in touch, but I have a slot a week on Tuesday (29th Jan) that you could use.

Do you fancy taking part in the blog tour I'm arranging for March?

message 12: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie Cronin | 31 comments Absolutely yes to both. Bob is a fine author to feature :) and I'll be in touch with you privately regarding the 29th and your March blog tour. Thanks.

BTW to others reading this -- I also feature other indie authors on my two blogs, particularly those who write anywhere in the spec or crime genres. Interviews, guest posts, giveaways -- contact me if interested in a little extra publicity.

message 13: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Yup, I can do that, Bob.
I never tire of plugging this indie book, which I feel is above and beyond.
It's true that perhaps we like, or like with this sort of excitement, other novels that do a bit of what we're trying to do. Ie. we feel a kinship. I feel a kinship with this project -- different as our books are. I mean to learn from him.

Anyhow, he's Port Royal. You can't miss my review, few as they are.

message 14: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Holloway | 51 comments I love helping other indie authors. Last year I wrote reviews for over 100 books, all by indies. I wrote the reviews on Amazon. I read many more but didn't write reviews for the ones I didn't care for. I now have many favorites:

Annette Mackey: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

Larry LaVoie: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

Claude Bouchard: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

Kenneth Hoss: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

The list is very long and I suggest you go to my website to get the complete list: http://authorpeggyholloway.webs.com/r...

Bob Craton | 24 comments Readers,
In an earlier comment, Sherrie Cronin recommended Brian Rush's new book "Goddess Born." I just finished it and now I recommend it too.

message 17: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Pearson Quick shout out to my favourite Indies of the moment:
Louise West (brilliant new author; her ghostly tale "Late" is well worth a read and she is serialising her latest short, Stamp, on her blog)
Karen Heard (darkly delicious short stories)
and Charlie Plunkett (I contributed to her 100 little words on parenting, and really enjoyed her warm yet honest take on parenting in her other books)
Enjoy :~)

To everyone: Michael's blog isn't a book obviously but it's definitely worth checking out.
