Who Am I? (email shared by Alice)

I had to delete it on another group as they got super upset about it. My sister also chewed me out via email. I didn't think it was that offensive!

Who? Why would that make me think of him? Okay, I am being facetious. Whether they approve or not, it is the readers making the comparison. You know what's really scary? Free speech is becoming rare, and not a single law was passed against it. Why should we fear to speak in a free country?
Are we becoming like the quote from Ayn Rand's Anthem that I posted in the Philosophy thread, "...our brothers are silent, for they dare not speak the thoughts of their minds. For all must agree with all, and they cannot know if their thoughts are the thoughts of all, and so they fear to speak."
Perhaps we need to think through why the original post in this thread makes us uncomfortable.
I admit I am not much of a historian so maybe that's why some of these statements about Hitler are unfamiliar to me, like being critical of a past war and a birth certificate issue.

That said, we do have a very dangerous trend in this country, by both the totalitarian Left and the authoritarian Right in the two Establishment parties, to censor and criminalize speech they don't like, and that creates a mood of intimidation in many people's minds. If we want to continue to live in anything resembling a democracy, that's a trend we need to resist, and an intimidation we need to defy, with everything that's within us.

Well said. It is just a shame that that speech is so often full of obscenities and untruths. But if we lose (or fear to use) our free speech in more honorable ways, then free thoughts and personal activities may not be far behind.

The great oddity is that Hitler believed in physical characteristics which were (most likely) almost completely counter to the historical Aryans. No doubt Hitler twisted the views of Gustaf Kosinna to "create" the myth of the master race of Europeans.
One of the most subtle and interesting points of Hitler's efforts is how easily he manipulated otherwise good Christians into such anti-semitic drivel. However, it must be admitted that anti semitism has ancient roots, even in the otherwise genius of Augustine and later in Martin Luther of the Reformation.
It is a great mystery (at least to me) as to how Hitler united the themes of the Templars and the Holy Grail without invoking the Hebrew heritage of Christ. However, Hitler believed in a clearly new messiah and despised Christianity, at least secretly at first. It was only when Hitler required an oath of allegiance to himself above God from Christians that a real separation of the chaff took place.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an extremely interesting example of how some Germans struggled and finally broke with the ideals of Hitler. His writings from prison are examples of how difficult a change this was but are stunning examples of unparallelled beauty and explanations of God's grace. My favorite is the Meditations on the Psalms.

I called Mom about this as she used to know lots about Hitler as she read so many books about him but she has forgotten everything. I asked was he born in Austria and she thought so. I had some questions too. After a few more questions trying to get ideas she got defensive with me as she and my sister voted for Obama so we talked about something else.

Oh, I meant to reply no one can really say what they truly think anymore due to being politically correct all the time.

I did wonder how accurate it was. I sure agree with you.

No worries, I understood. I also agree. :)
I have never endeavored harder to be fair and undecided than during this last election and subsequent swearing-in. It was quite an internal struggle deciding which candidate should get my vote. One of my daughters is 18 and it was her first vote, which made me feel all the more how I had to remain impartial. Despite the pre-election talk of hope and change, I see certain mannerism and attitudes that concern me. Voicing this in some venues can quickly bring about defensive judgments.
That conversation with your mother reminded me very much of religion talks I've had with some members of my family. Instead of a discussion of the issues, communication just seems to break down quickly.
Anyway, I'm glad you posted the e-mail. It has made us all think about a variety of things. We may not have a Hitler but many programs seem to be similar to socialism. Are they really what we want? need?
I would like to move to a non-socialist country and so would many of my friends but where is one now? There is a group in TX that wants to secede. My cousin told me about it and its called Freepers.
If we weren't so old we might even move to Alaska! I feel very alienated now but its not an unusual feeling for me actually.
I just had a great time at Facebook as someone sent me a movie link so you compare and vote for your favorite movies. It was FUN! I was schuffling and re-schufling movies (can't spell, LOL)..... I finally put The English Patient number one, then I guess I like Miss Potter number two (always cry), 3 - Twister I think. If you are on Facebook its fun doing it. I need to add on The Princess Bride which is a big favorite of mine. Most movies right now are just trash but I was glad to see how many I do really LOVE!!!!!

Just got this tonight in email and its not what you think but I thought it was fascinating:
WHO AM I?
I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country.. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with numerous women.
I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me. My mother died at an early age from cancer.
Later in life, questions arose over my real name.
My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.
I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.
I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.
That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career. I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.
I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s. They said I had a golden tongue and could talk anyone into anything. That reinforced my conceit.
I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks.
I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego.
At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.
But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better and every poor person would be fed & housed for free.
I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess. It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight.
I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.
I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.
I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope' , together we could change our country and the world.
So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities" like the Jews. My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader.
I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with.
I'm glad they didn't. Then I became the most powerful man in the world.. And the world learned the truth.
Who am I?
ADOLF HITLER.
WHO WERE YOU THINKING OF?
