Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments OMG, this book blew me away. I know. Linnea, you're supposed to be WRITING not reading but we had out-of-state company (hazard of living in Florida) for almost a week so working wasn't possible. Shoving through my TBR was.

OMG Alpha.

Okay, basic premise: a female biomechanical construct (think: Seven of Nine. Think: a female Data. Think: Summer Glau) is on the loose after the most ginormous nasty evil villain (Charon) created her and was killed (in Asaro's book SUNRISE ALLEY which I didn't read). USAF General Thomas Wharington was part of that adventure and key in this one. Alpha--the Summer Glau/Terminator/Seven of Nine gal--may still be following her original programming even though Charon is dead. She's slated to kidnap and kill General Wharington.

Or is she?

OMG what a book. Back cover reviews reference "an element of romance" but I'm sorry, this is a HUGELY romantic book. Note I say ROMANTIC and not SEXUAL. Yes, there's nookie but it's greatly off-camera yet greatly heart-rending.

Think: Jason Bourne meets Sarah Connor Chronicles/Terminator with a killer love story.

ALPHA is a hugely emotional love story. For readers who only read romance, the amount of time Alpha and Thomas are separated in the beginning may bore them. This is ASARO. DR. ASARO and she writes to an SF formula and not to a romance formula. So what you have to do with this book is fall in love with the hero (and he's a grandfather but only in years not...well, you'll see) way before you get to the love story. If you're 22, that might be a stretch. But if you're in your 40s (or 50s like I am), you are going to LOVE THOMAS WHARINGTON. (And yes, he's hot: Think: an American Pierce Brosnan. Or maybe Tom Selleck today).

Alpha is also an intense, bullets-flying, car-crashing, jets-screaming action adventure kind of story. It rivals a Bruce Willis flick.

It's set about 40 years in the future so if starships and alien planets freak you out, you don't have to deal with that here.

I loved this book. ~Linnea

Erin Quinn (erin_quinn) | 45 comments Hi Linnea, I've only read one of her books, but I loved it. If I had the luxury of reading whenever I want, I know she'd be on my glom list. (The one I read was--you guessed it--part of a RITA batch I got a few years ago. I swear the only reason I do that is because it forces me to read outside of my genre and every year I find a new author that I love and didn't know before. I "discovered" Shana Abe that way too.

Anyway, the book I read was Misted Cliffs. If you haven't read it, it was fabulous--not sci fi though. Well, it was in it's own world, but not space type sci fi.

Jessa Slade (jessaslade) | 114 comments Okay, you sold me. Seven of Nine + Bruce Willis = Win! I just had out of town company too; if only I'd had this post a week ago! Ah well, never too late to buy another book :)

I gotta check out this Alpha... that's awesome. She's a fantastic writer and a great person! :) I'm definitely going to keep my eyes out for Alpha!!

Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments Lady Oz, I feel the same way. ALPHA has actually been out for a couple years but I think it was originally released in hardback. SUNRISE ALLEY is book one but you don't need to read it to get ALPHA. You can get SUNRISE ALLEY for FREE on Baen's site (I have the download and plan to read it when I'm out of deadline and the usual assorted crises).

new_user, oh, there's nookie in ALPHA. But it's not in the (often) heavily descriptive-type scenes found in romance novels. My own books are actually rather nookie-light compared to the Laurel K Hamilton, Angela Knight etc stuff. I fade to black more or as some reviewers have noted, concentrate on character's FEELINGS not BODY PARTS (not that there's anything wrong with body parts... ;-) ...it's just my style of writing and what I feel write best: feelings.) So I had no problems with ALPHA not getting into all the body part descriptions.

Jacalyn | 454 comments Oh I'll go over to Baen. But I have a trouble with ebooks just because I would like to read on the go. I wish that I could cause I like ebooks. But having to do the computer thing is a pain. But, since I have so many stinking books... maybe by the time I get around to having time for this one... I'll have something to read ebooks on! HEHE
