Magdelanye | 2856 comments should extra care be taken when choosing the first books for a new year? What influences your new years choices?

Magdelanye | 2856 comments For somw reason GR has been confusing and even refusing to post any new title to what I am reading.
But I have been reading some excellent books.
The Gentry by J Nicolson was a weighty subject I did not expect to be so fascinating, and revealing. It doent paint a pretty picture, but it certainly gave a wealth of clues as to what life might have been like from the middle ages to the present.
I am now reading a translation from the Gaelic, On a Bender, by Eduardo Blanco Amor A brilliant feat.

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments If there is such a thing as controlled chaos, that is my current process for selecting a book.

I think elsewhere it might be considered opportunistic or entrepeneurial, both words which I may not be able to spell.

Magdelanye | 2856 comments sounds kinda like whats happening with me, in spain,at the mercy of the fates as to what I can get my hands on. Ice I strongly urge you to find the Gentry,by Nicolson, think you would very much appreciate.

Magdelanye | 2856 comments In fact, it is pissing rain through most of Spain.
I have just read the Galician classic, On A Bender, by Eduardo Amor Blanco,I think. I even reviewed it.
BTW, I keep referring people to your Monsanto article, and just helped a guy I met here at the hostal to join GR.He was very interested, but the deal shaker was that review.I dont really need to read DQ again, unless my spanish improves considerably.

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments Good to hear from you Magdelanye, always. Is the rain in Spain more beautiful?

Jim Ellie wrote: "Good to hear from you Magdelanye, always. Is the rain in Spain more beautiful?"

Yes, but only on the plain. (sorry! couldn't resist)

message 8: by Magdelanye, Senior Flight Attendant (new)

Magdelanye | 2856 comments The rain in Granada is like the rain anywherelse.
After 4 days we are delirious with joy to see the sun come out.Back on the upstairs terrace, the sun begins to be warm and now if only this keeps up we will be able to see once more the charm that distinguishes Spain from Vancouver, for instance.
Jim,see my opening line message 6 for my riff on this old chestnut.

Traveller (moontravlr) | 70 comments I really need to brush up on my DQ as well. (Unfortunately, the English translation- I'll probably never get to do Spanish since i don't even get time to get my French up to standard, and my Spanish is seriously non-existent)
I never managed to read all of DQ. Sadly this year's TBR is already up there against the ceiling...

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments Enjoying the snow (that rarity in England) and have added Kavan Anna's book Ice to my tbr

message 12: by Magdelanye, Senior Flight Attendant (last edited Jan 25, 2013 03:12AM) (new)

Magdelanye | 2856 comments In fact there is snow on the Sierra Nevada mountains visible not so far away. I enjoy snow as long as I have no personal contact.
Kavans is not a warm book.

message 13: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments The view sounds gorgeous-you are a brave woman, I hope you are fully enjoying whatever benefits accrue from that!

I liked Kavan when I read her (years ago) but none of her books are warm. I never read Ice & now is not the time when the city is frozen.
(I remember liking Sleep Has His House & Asylum Piece & Other Stories very much)

message 14: by Magdelanye, Senior Flight Attendant (new)

Magdelanye | 2856 comments I certainly preferred both of those to Ice. (Ice Bear take note, maybe you should read either of these before you tackle <<<<<<<I have been lucky lately with finding some decent books, miss having a selection. I want the city and the city!(China Mievilles book, especially in time to participate in group read.

Is anybody else having problems with adding a new book?

message 15: by Ice, Pilgrim (new)

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments ..... and I thought my tbr was safe ..... coming to the end of 700 page + and moving to 800 + ...... Hamish still at the bedside and dreaming of Kindle (not yet). Many book tokens to spend.

Snow has flown.

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments Just picked up a 1000 page book from the library - thinking of entering the olympics as a weight lifter

message 18: by Ice, Pilgrim (new)

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan ....... thankfully its a paperback version!

I can feel a Kindle promotion coming my way ...

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments Valentine's day slowly passing me by ....... awaiting some mystery, intrigue and sparkle ..... you can tell I am still reading Hamish Macbeth

message 20: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments Oh yes-I want to read Macbeth! (and not the Shakespearean kind)

I'm in the middle of The Magus by John Fowles which I'm liking a lot. I'm supposed to be reading Faust Parts I & II but not making a lot of headway. Work makes it impossible for me to read the way I used to-hopefully this is just temporary. (at least until I retire-I hope I don't forget how to read by then!)

message 21: by Magdelanye, Senior Flight Attendant (new)

Magdelanye | 2856 comments HI Ellie and Ice
I was just thinking about flight paths and glad to see you here.
I loved the Magus and want to read it again someday.
I am reading Hopscotch which I brought with me to Spain but only began on the plane here. Its an amazing book which requires some effort.
Ice, did you finish the Jordan book?

message 22: by Ice, Pilgrim (new)

Ice Bear (neilar) | 839 comments 30 pages a day and needing at least one library renewal. I would like to try and finish the series this year.
