That is a good one, yes! The Rome setting is actually fine, since the writer is British.

I totally forgot the writer is, in fact British. Cheers to my memory loss. I can't think of any others at this moment; sorry.

I might try the Quiet American, the first book on this list or the last one from this list.
Also, the Pickwick Pape..."
Elizabeth, thank you! Great suggestions and the Guardian list is very helpful. Much appreciated!

I enjoyed The Northern Light, although the paper itself is the main focus of the book so may not be what you're after. A bit of a pot boiler.
Ashenden. I haven't read this book but I have read some of the Ashenden short stories in other volumes and WSM's keen observations of human foibles are always delightful. Ashenden was a playwright recruited into the British secret service.

Christopher Brookmyre has a great series about Jack Parlabane, investigative journalist and relentless crusader against corruption and graft. starts with Quite Ugly One Morning

I'm looking for British novels in which journalists are characters or the press is a part of the story but is not the setting or main subject. I've had Middlemarch suggested to me, but so far don't have any other ideas.
Thanks!
