Brianna Well I couldn't wait and I'm a slow reader so I thought I might get a head start. Deb what do you think so far? I am reading the Penguin Classics Ebook I got online so I don't know if I got the unabridged version or not.

>>Frist question: When reading which do you prefer Unabridged or Abridged?

message 2: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I perfer the unabridged. I am enjoying it. I love the short chapters. They can be dangerous though. I see the next chapter is short so I read the next chapter and the next, and the next. Before I know I have read 5 or 6 chapters. I confess, this was one of my favorite movies when it came out in the 80's. I think it was the 80s's As I am reading the book I am remembering the movie. When I finish the book I'll rewatch the movie.

Brianna I can't lie: I'm having a really hard time getting into this....:(

Lisa | 3 comments Wow! Just found and joined this group and just happen to be reading The Count of Monte Cristo. I am reading the unabridged version and I absolutely love it! I am not quite 300 pages in and have been reading for about 3 weeks. I try to read 10 - 15 pages per day, but often fall asleep before I can get through it. I read 75+ most weekends. So excited to have others to discuss this with.

message 5: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I am not as far as you are in the book. But I am loving it too. My Hubby was trying to be nice and put the movie on over the weekend. I wasn't going to watch it again until after I finished the book. My poor Hubby will never do that again. I spent the first 20-30 minutes of the movie saying, that isn't in the book. That is not how it happened in the book. As usual the book is soooo much better, and I'm not even 1/4 through the book yet.

message 6: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Okay well I am going to stick with it then.
Lisa I'm so glad to have you join! Get this ball rolling! This is our first book we are reading as a group. Please feel free to start any topic, maybe we could just put a disclaimer at the top if there are any spoilers to first time readers.

Brianna I have just finished chapter 7, The Examination and I am a little confused. Villefort believed Dantes and then after reading the letter changed his mind? I don't understand the politics behind the letter and what it had to do with Villefort and his father.

message 10: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb The letter is from Napoleon to Villefort's Father. Villefort was a supporter of Napoleon and the letter was about Napoleon's plan to retake France. If it became known that the father was a Napoleon support it would have hurt Villefort career. In order for him to move up in his career Villefort had to stay loyal to the King and have no connection with Napoleon.

Lisa | 3 comments About 40% finished. Still loving this book. Sometimes it switches gears and I'm lost for a little while. But then the plot twists back around and I imagine that I can see it building toward this sweeping stunning conclusion.

message 12: by Brianna (new)

Brianna I'm at chapter 15 right now. I am not a fan of Villefort for his cowardliness. But then the interaction with his father shows another side and his internal dialog that is full of remorse.

message 13: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I'm between Lisa and Brianna. I'm on chapter 36 about 30% done. I too am loving the book. I have the hard back for at home but my kindle is in my purse for breaks at work and it even reads to me on my commute.

message 14: by Brianna (new)

Brianna I really want an e-reader, I keep going back and forth. I love books, physically. But the idea of an e-reader seems great. My cousin got this program called, Calibre, for my computer and I read books from there to help me decide if I really want one. We were talking about which one he likes and told me about Kobo, apparently you can download any book from anywhere on to this device but the others you have to buy the books from their company. Deb, what made you decide to get one? Lisa is that how you are reading too?

message 15: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I love that I have dozens of books at my finger tips without having to actually carry 12 books. Plus I like to knit and hand quilt. I can put my kindle on autoread. It will read to me while I do my hand work.

message 16: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Autoread?! It reads non audio books aloud to you?

message 17: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb yes if your device has that option. my kindle will read but my kindle fire will not

message 18: by Lisa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa | 3 comments I have a Kindle that will read many books- the books have to be designated as "audio." And I have many classics on my Kindle. Having said that, I am currently reading a physical copy of Monte Cristo. A couple of reasons: the physical copy I have is one my daughter picked up for me and it is very beautiful. I simply delight in the look of the book. Secondly. I find that often when I read a very long and/or complicated book such as this one : it is much easier for me to flip back through physical pages as opposed virtual pages when I need to check a detail or remember a character. I know I cam bookmark or highlight in my
Kindle but I prefer the hardcover. I think I am very visual and tactile. I need and enjoy a real book in my hands. On the other hand I wouldn't dream of leaving home without my Kindle. Heaven forbid I be somewhere without a decent book and no way to buy one. Horrors!

Deb February is coming to an end. How is everyone doing with The Count of Monte Cristo? I went to help my daughter with her first child who was born last week. Needless to say I didn't have a lot of time to read. I am not even 1/2 through The Count yet. I am still loving the book and looking forward to getting back into it.

message 20: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Congrats Deb!

message 21: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I was hoping to have this book done by the end of March. I has been a long time since I read a book over 1000 pages. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the book. But when you have read over 600 pages and you are just a little over 50% it can seem like it will never end.

Naomi Hagelund (alaskanaomi) I finished it by the middle of March. Fantastic book. I am so glad I read it! Do we have another book lined up for April???

message 23: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb Congrats on finishing The Count. I was hoping to be done by April but it may take me an extra week. I to am loving this book. I can't help wondering if it were written today how much would have been edited out.

Naomi Hagelund (alaskanaomi) I watched the movie afterward and was thoroughly disappointed

Deb I watched the movie when I was around page 250. It wasn't any thing like the book. I kept telling my husband that wasn't in the book or he wasn't in the book. I agree it was disappointing.

message 26: by Deb (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deb I finally finished The Count. I loved it. I must admit there were times that I struggled. Like I said earlier I wonder if it was written today how much would be edited out. Around the middle of the book I was wondering what that story line had to do with the book. In the end it all came together. I am so glad I did not read the abridged verision!!!
