SciFi and Fantasy Book Club discussion

A long while ago I read a scifi book series about a character who used a very particular weapon. A light saber type sword that was unique to the user. It had small needles in the handle that injected into the palm a type of virus. The weapon could only be used by the one with the correct dna sequence. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember because I want to read it again! Please help!
