Jess | 55 comments Just picked this up to fill in the "based on true story" week. Truthfully, it's more of a memoir, but I'm okay with bending the rules a little.

So far, I'm liking it (I like Mandvi), but I'm feeling like the framing is a bit off- I'm careening through his childhood history without a clear sense of how he feels about these events now, or why he's driven to tell these stories. I'm hoping we'll get more reflection as we go along.

Jess | 55 comments Finished this yesterday. I liked it, but wasn't particularly thrilled or blown away. It was interesting to know his story and it was an accessible illustration of American and British racisms, and he's always funny, but I periodically got turned off by what seemed like a fairly self-aggrandizing tone (I, an artist, had no choice but to do what artists do, for I, an artist, tell a truth and allow the creative force to run through my body like water...I'm not quoting, but that was the general feel here and there.)

Three stars.
