Next:

Now, I know there's a lot of active authors in this group. [Don't hide in the back of the room, I see you].

What I would like all of *you lot* to do is either
(1) message me or,
(2) reply to me here

This is so I can understand just how many and who-you-are.

For example: let's say I wanted to arrange an 'author's roundtable' or a 'Amazon publishing chat'--I'd need to know what authors we have in-house, to contact about this.

It will also help me sort your books into our bookshelf and it will help organize any publishing events you have.

If you look at my 'espionage group' you will see how elegantly this works: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

So: authors raise your hands, please..

thankin' ye

Feliks

M. Myers (mruth) | 14 comments Feliks, first of all, thanks for breathing new life into the group. I'm an author as well as a reader, with three books in my Maggie Sullivan mysteries series plus a sta d alone thriller and other books. Should I list all the links in this thread? Not sure if they're on the group bookshelf as I didn't want to be pushy & add them myself.

Howdy thar, pod nuh

Right proper of ye to speak right up like you just did.

Maybe this'll set an example for th' others. They're shy and hanging back. If they don' look more lively I'll have to go round em up.

To answer your speculation: nope--no need to fret any, or do anything else with steers wearin' your brand, at present. No need to run 'em in with the rest of th herd.

All I want's names--jus' the names of all th' hands workin' this side of the M-L spread!

Happy tah' cross trails wit'ch'a--an' mighty proud to hear your kind words

The thing which maybe authors don't realize is that if you work with the moderator of a group, everyone benefits.

If authors-in-residence are organized so that their promo is managed and modulated, everyone is happier. (1) Readers will find new books they want (easier), (2) authors won't have to worry about their marketing so much; and (3) the group itself is made calmer, more peaceful and re-focused on books rather than sales-pitches.

This group has 1500 members, a lot of neat discussion threads and an extensive bookshelf to browse through. Its a great resource. We just need to organize it a little bit so that everyone gets what they want out of it.

Rats. I guess I will have to deduce who our authors are by checking the profile of each group member.

I am totally loathe to send out 'group emails'...

Sheryl Dunn (SherylinMexico) | 3 comments New author (well, not so new). First novel published recently. Working on the second.

I've mainly been lurking!

Thanks for asking.

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) | 11 comments I'm the author of the Sedona O'Hala humorous mystery novels and the Moon Shadow paranormal mysteries. I have some other mysteries published here and there.

I participated more in this group a while back, but most of the groups on GR are kind of ghost towns so I haven't posted in a while. Thanks for the welcome back.

E.Michael Helms | 2 comments I'm back! My name is Michael (I write under E. Michael Helms).
I've been traditionally published in different genres. I'm currently writing the Mac McClellan Mystery Series. Two Mac novels have been published by Seventh Street Books. I recently signed with another publisher for the next four books in the series. I'm open to discussing writing/marketing/whatever about the mystery genre. Question: are authors allowed to promote here (events, new books, contests, etc.)? Or, is there another specific thread for that? Thanks, and glad to be aboard. --Michael

Alan Orloff (goodreadscomalan_orloff) | 1 comments I'm an author.

Ellen (emakins) | 2 comments I'm an author, but not of mysteries (5 books w/Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Knopf, & Johns Hopkins University Press), so I don't know if I should count.

message 18: by Alex (last edited May 20, 2015 10:21AM) (new)

Alex I'm a modest author. I want to be in that subgroup (the modest authors subgroup of the authors group).

message 19: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillelaguire) | 2 comments I'm also an author. I'm not particularly active on this group (though I mean to be). I write a variety of things so I don't produce a lot on any particular series. Most of what I write is mystery or mystery related. I also do audiobooks and fiction podcasting.

message 20: by Jen (new)

Jen (mysterywriter19) | 1 comments I'm an aspiring author, currently working on a myriad of mystery novels set in England within three separate time periods: Victorian Era, Interwar Period and near future.

message 22: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Long | 4 comments Hello everyone. Yes, I am an author and have been a member of Goodreads for several years. I love reading and writing mysteries, especially cozies. The Lilly M Series (3 books so far), DYING TO DREAM (a paranormal mystery), and A DEADLY DEED GROWS (romantic suspense) are a few to my credit. Currently, I've written a mystery with native american culture mixed into the story. For that I'm seeking agent representation with the goal of getting bigger fish than small presses to publish my work!

message 23: by Mary (new)

Mary Miley (marymiley) | 1 comments I'm an author, traditionally published. Historical mysteries and nonfiction. Haven't participated much in this group, but might start, now that the group has an active moderator.

Good deal. The way I moderate should eliminate both 'ghost ship' as well as the 'shore battery' situation (chaotic author promo) that apparently sunk this group, before. (yes! still more sea-dog similes)

Anyway, I can't even begin to convey the dolefulness of the chore I had this past week.. manually moving 200 author-promo threads, click-by-painful-click.

Readers seeking book-chat, vs authors trying to promote sales, should always be kept distinct and separate, (to my way of thinking). Otherwise no one shows up at all, and you get the Marie Celeste.

message 25: by Amber (new)

Amber Foxx (amberfoxx) | 37 comments Thanks, Feliks. I tried to revive the group after it had fallen into promo-land, seeking to find fellow readers--and I'm an author. But not a moderator, so I didn't last.
Anyway, on topic. I am an author. (Been reviewed by a couple of members of our lit fic group despite being a resident of the "genre ghetto"). My books are moderately paranormal, murder-less mysteries. I have three books in print and a fourth on the way.The Calling, Shaman's Blues andSnake Face

message 26: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillelaguire) | 2 comments As an author I have to say I do NOT want to read author promo. I like knowing who is an author, but honestly, if you're an author, and you say things about, say, Agatha Christie that interest me, I'll click on your name and then see that, hey, you ARE an author. Much more positive interaction there.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 185 comments Mod
Well, authors don't have an 'easy job of it' these days. They're fluttering like vanes in the wind. They have to do their own marketing & business management, in addition to any actual writing.

That being acknowledged, I too have asked authors on Goodreads to 'be more human' when among members of a reader's group. Sometimes they confess they just don't have time to chat. Others were stung by my remarks and flamed me back in return.

Shrug.

Judy (emmagolden) | 1 comments Hi Feliks,

I am an author and creator of the Emma Golden mystery series. I will be releasing the third book in this series in June. Just so y'all know, my first two books in the series are An Unholy Alliance and The Difficult Sister, both set in Oregon. The Man Who Wasn't There is the third novel, and is set in Oregon wine country.

Thanks so much for asking. More information on the books plus a link to my blogs may be found at www.judynedry.com.

Meanwhile, 'Jen'...has no author page.

Good stuff. Thanks y'all. You'll see how beneficial all this is, in jig time.

My basic idea is to limit the 'repetitive'-style author promo that bogged down the group before.

In future, a resident/in-house author to this group should only post a blurb when they have a giveaway or a promotion to announce. That's a legitimate reason to promo. But otherwise, there's no need for constant, re-iterated self-raves.

I realize you're all worried that your marketing is not reaching readers, so to ease that concern, we put up a 'showcase thread' for you and your works right on our group homepage. You can see that's what I'm working on right now.

That way, readers know to click *just one location* to find recent releases. This saves them the trouble of reading post-after-post of sales-pitch that used to litter all the discussion threads. It makes finding-a-new-release-book, a convenient one-click feature.

Then--let's say any one of you authors have a new book release coming up--I, as moderator will gladly highlight that by announcing it myself. We'll 'feature' the book for a whole two weeks or something. That way all our members get the word, but in a non-annoying way. And thus we all benefit from less of a 'loud marketplace' environment.

Ty for the kind word. Y'know, this is nothing more than what I used to do when I took over Lubyanka Prison. Until I got there, they were still pushing prisoners out of 3rd story windows and calling them 'accidents'. Shocking inefficiency.
