Books on the Nightstand discussion

Anna wrote in the General Discussion thread: "By an author of a different gender"? Than my own? Than what I usually read? Since I find this category a little too simple and boring I will choose to interpret this as an author of a different gender than typically male or female. Or a book that deals with this subject, like Annabel by Kathleen Winter or Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I don't understand this one either. What does different gender mean?

It was intended to be by an author whose gender is different from yours. I guess, because some women tend to read only books by women, and men by men. Though everyone here is so well-read we know that's not the case.
