Diana (leseriana) I'm reading a collection of stories by E.A. Poe right now. It would fit because he lived between 1809-1849. Too bad I don't have the "published before 1900" category on my card...

Laura Kalpakian (laurakalpakian) | 4 comments Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Braddon, c. 1850
This novel, scandalous in its day, hits on all the feminist themes, tho the responses are typically 19th c. A total page turner, its author lived it to see it become a silent picture. Her other best known book (out of gazillions that she wrote) is Aurora Floyd. My feeling is that Thomas Hardy took his heroine cues from Mary Braddon.

Lauren | 9 comments I loved The Woman in White and it also led me to Lady Audley's secret, which is also fantastic.

For a really deep pre-1900 cut, I'd suggest Wieland, or, The Transformation Although it was published in the late 1700s, it reads very modern. A really fun and spooky read.

Kathleen Connors | 2 comments I'm listening to Sense & Sensibility via the CraftLit podcast, which counts. She also did Woman in White, and plenty of others in the public domain, which should give lots of potential choices.
