message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Looking forward to the toppler. Nice one for setting up a thread for us. We'll have to think of a team name although it might be best to wait until we know the theme of the toppler.

message 4: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments Here's the gopher waving to Team D. He's anxious to start gophering.

Well, okay. Maybe not a gopher, but a rodent at any rate. Gophering is gophering. I thought I would clarify that before you all think I'm a bit squirrely.

message 5: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2089 comments Thanks for setting up our thread, Janice. Love the "gopher" and I'm with him, can't wait to start gophering!

Sarah, I agree that we should wait till we know the theme, to come up with a name. I can't wait to see what Jaxnsmom has come up with this time. I can't believe she hasn't given us any tantalizing teasers so we can drive ourselves nuts speculating, haha.

Cute little mascot!

message 7: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Any clues on the theme would be a dead giveaway.
Well, ok, here's a hint - it's not seasonal :) Oh, and it's not a board game.

Did that help any?

message 8: by Kazen (new)

Kazen jaxnsmom wrote: "Did that help any?"

It gave me enough confidence to make a crazy guess, so yes!

What first came to mind is... A Night at the Movies! Or maybe even the theatre or circus. I would have a hard time coming up with a non-dead giveaway clue for any of those, hehe. ("It's... entertainment.")

message 9: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Janice posts a squirrel and talks of gophers and now what I call the caddyshack song is in my head. I'm calling in Bill Murray

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments Thanks for that, Travis! Now I'll be singing it all day.

message 12: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Maybe we should be the squirrelly gophers. This should be an interesting Toppler given that it hasn't even started yet and this thread is nutty (haha).

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Thanks, Travis. Now I can say that I have watched some of that crazy movie vs "I have never watched it". LOL.

message 18: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Cherie you have to watch the movie. It's a classic. 35 year anniversary this year.

I probably will, it is just that I could not stand Bill Murry for such a long time. I like him a lot now, as he has mellowed with age. Did you see him on Letterman in his Peter Pan outfit?

No help whatsoever, lol :p

Only in highlights. I dvrd letterman the last couple weeks as the show wound down. Lots of Bill Murray takes. Caddyshack was written or directed by Murrays brother and he was jist hanging around so they put him onas Carl. He wasn't cast and Carl was supposed to be a small part but Bill took ot over and made up basically all of Carls part because nothing was written. And hos career took off.

message 22: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2089 comments I didn't know that, Travis. Bill Murray and the gopher stole the show.

message 23: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments And Chevy Chase coined the saying, "Be the ball." Loved that show.

message 24: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments That should be our theme for the toppler! "Be the book."

message 25: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments Welcome Paula! We're patiently hanging out (not like some other teams) for jaxnsmom to reveal the tasks so we can start planning.

I'm curious to learn what awards she's scared up and how that's going to relate to tasks. On the poll for June themed reads, she commented that The Narrow Road to the Deep North had been nominated for the bad sex award. So if that's any indication, this should be fun.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I'm curious about what J'mom is going to have us do. Looking forward to the big reveal.

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments I'd start listing some of the weird and wonderful awards out there, but I don't want to add fuel to her fire. She's evil enough as it is.

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments jaxnsmom as she plans the topplers. Can't you hear the evil laughter??

message 29: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59930 comments Should we start thinking about a name for our team?

message 30: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2089 comments Lol, Janice! Definitely can!

message 31: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Paula. Welcome to the group and our toppled team!

Great pic for Jmom, Janice.

Yes, patiently waiting to figure out how the toppler theme will affect my series challenge for the next level. I only have three books listed so far, but I will probably be done with them by the time the toppler starts. Always hoping to get to use books I already own to fit the theme and help the team with max points!

Yay team!

The Danger Zone
Dynamite Topplers

We need someone to keep us organized and someone to track our points. Any volunteers?

Kazen I don't know if we have data people on our team but I threw this spreadsheet together with the awards so far. I would be more than happy to maintain the sheet or turn over duties to someone more experienced than I. ^^;

An empty circle (○) is for a book planned and a filled in circle (●) is for a book read. I put a couple data points in as examples. Let me know what you think! :D

I like The Demolition Team...we demolish the competition and demolish our tbr piles.

The spreadsheet looks great, Kazen! Thanks for stepping up!

message 42: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Your spreadsheet looks great, Kazen. You have my vote.

I was scratching my head about how to do a better job of tracking the books I own to make it easier to see where I can apply them, but I have enough work just tracking the titles on a word doc list. I have too many!

message 43: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm thinking I won't be reading a lot of books this toppler. Meeting the criteria is a monster. At least with my selection of available books. There are a few books I've read this spring that would have fit the toppler perfect. Nothing I wish to re-read though.

message 44: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So far I have Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game which is about baseball so works for the olympics. Also was a movie but I'm not sure about any awards but reading a book made ibto movie should be one of the easier tasks.

message 45: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I will also do a Nobel prize book. I have some options here so not sure which book it will be yet

message 46: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I think there are more tasks coming, Travis, so I wouldn't give up hope yet! Any humorous books on your TBR? And you'd be surprised some books that have been made into movies... I forgot that And Then There Were None was made into a film back in the day.

ETA: Ding-Dongs, Divas, Dandys, Dynamos, Drinkers ? Is there going to tippling themes too?

Yeah waiting on more tasks so I can tap into my sci fi, fantasy and horror books. That s what I have the most of

message 50: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 1538 comments I'm hoping to read two books and listen to 1 audio.

Books:
Humour: Bloodsucking Fiends or The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

Audio Books:
Golden Globe: Girl With a Pearl Earring (European film award- Cinematographer)
Beauty: The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick Will this work?

I have the Jane Austen Persuasion to read. Could work for Oscars or Emmy. But 5 bonus points as an Oscar!
