M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments The group voted to read The City of Ember by Jeanne DePrau. This is one of my personal middle grade favorites because of the rich world building. Will definitely look forward to reading it again!

Here's the GoodReads description:

Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked…but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all—the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness….

But when two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? Will the people of Ember listen to them?

David Tiefenthaler (tiefsa) | 25 comments Oooh! I never read the description for this book. Sounds great. Anything that mentions Building sounds good. (I think my kids have made me play too much Minecraft).

M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments I loved the idea of a world where everything is wearing out and resources are limited. The characters have a kind of Depression Era resourcefulness as they try to make do with the little they have, worried that the lights will go out for good at any moment. Great premise for a story and very well executed, I hope some of you get a chance to read it this summer!

I will have to try to find time to read this. It's been on my radar screen for a while, but never made it to the top of the pile (can I mix my metaphors a little more if I work at it?).

Madeline Reynolds | 43 comments I finished reading this novel a few days ago. It was quite nice!

I am hopelessly far behind. This one is joining the long list of those that aren't happening :(

Madeline Reynolds | 43 comments The City of Ember had a very interesting plot line. The idea of having another world inside Earth's crust was very unique and original. I can't wait to read the sequel!

Tara Ellis | 40 comments I know I'm late, but I just saw this. Thank you for reminding me to read this book! I had meant to pick it up months ago after seeing (and loving) the movie. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it! (nothing compares to a good book in your hand! :) )

Reading people's comments makes me think I'd enjoy it. As Rebecca says, yet another one for the interminable line of books to read!

edit: oops, I've already added it. Only 202 in front of it!

LOL, Jemima! I don't think I even added it to my list--I see it at the library all the time, so one day I'll grab it and drag it home. I do most of my book selection on impulse anyway.
