30.2 Jonquil’s Task: Takin’ It to the Streets
This is a TWO book task; you may read books from both options or repeat one option with two different books. REQUIRED: State which option(s) you chose when you post.
1) Read a book set in a place that you now consider, or once considered, magical. It can be a real-world or fictional place. The book may be fiction or nonfiction.
The Horse and His Boy, CS Lewis
AR Quiz No. 200108 EN Fiction. Accelerated Reader Quiz Information IL: MY - BL: 5.8 - AR Pts: 8.0
REQUIRED: Tell us why you consider this place to be magical when you post.
My first “magical place” was Narnia (not Tahiti - sorry Agent Coulson). The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first fantasy book I remember reading, way back in the depths of time, and it left a big impression on me. Of course, back when I was eight or so, I didn’t understand the religious symbolism which I know bothers a lot of people about that particular book. Instead, I just kept wishing that “today” would be the day when the back of the wardrobe opened and I could have a wonderful adventure.
Rereading the series now, I realise that I recall some of the books much better than others. I can remember almost every bit of Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (which is my favourite in the series - decades after I first read the books, Reepicheep is still one of my favourite fictional characters ever!) However, I chose the Horse and his Boy for this task as it’s one of the ones I don’t know as well, and is therefore all the better to help me rediscover the magic!
2) Summer was also a time for festivals to honor a neighborhood church’s patron saint. Read a book in which a group of people takes to the streets to celebrate. REQUIRED: Name or describe the celebration.
A Crabby Killer, Leighann Dobbs
The book is set against the background of the town’s “Crab Festival” which has stalls selling food and produce down by the harbour.
Approved for length by Dlmrose in ebook verification thread message #4815

1. Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott L: MG BL 82 AR Pts 13.0 I first read this in 4th grade which set me off on a Louisa May Alcott jag, that eventually led to other 19th and early 20th century works like the weeping Elsie Dinmore and the Five Little Peppers. I always wanted to name a daughter Polly Sophronsa, but saner heads prevailed.
2. Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel because my mother made sure I had plenty of books and time to read them. In kindergarten and first grade I sat on the big chest and read aloud to her from my primers as she ironed. The Dick and Jane monotony must have driven her crazy. She set me up for a job as page at the Library when I was in Jr. High and one thing led to another and eventually to a library degree.
