Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Do we have a list somewhere of the books that are not available in english? Or maybe we should collect them here?
Is there a way to translate them for ourselves? Thought I read something about someone doing something like that.

Nathan | 45 comments So far the only one I've found is Camera Obscura by Hildebrand. Seems to be available only in its original Dutch.

I use to think Jahrestage by Uwe Johnson was only in German but it turns out there is an english version but only 130 of the original 300+ were translated so it's abridged, but a complete version is apparently coming out soon in the future so thats great news :)

Tytti | 17 comments My guess is that all of them have been translated, at least some time. The book is in English, after all, it wouldn't make any sense to choose books that are not when there are many classics outside the list that have been translated. Camera Obscura, apparently in English.

Tricia | 18 comments Here are the ones for which I haven't found an English translation:

The Port - Antun Soljan
Back to Oegstgeest - Jan Wolkers
Gimmick! - Joost Zwagerman
Margot and the Angels - Kristien Hemmerechts
Smell of Sadness - Alfred Kossman
The Taebek Mountains- Jo Jung-Rae
The New World - Heruy Walda-Sellasse
Lady Number Thirteen - José Carlos Somoza
Halftime - Martin Walser

I think this is fairly complete. Let me know if I've missed something or if there are English versions of any of these. There is supposed to be an English translation of The Taebek Mountains coming out at some point, but there hasn't been an update in awhile.

Sandi | 227 comments There was a similar topic before, maybe it is useful. At least the first few posts contain information about books not available in English.

Tytti | 17 comments At least Halftime has been translated to English, I didn't bother to check others.

"Other works by Martin Walser in English translation include two books that follow the character Anselm Kristlein as he negotiates his way through life in an obsessively competitive society – Halftime: A Novel (1960) and The Unicorn (1983); and Swan Villa (1983) about an estate agent whose every action results in abysmal failure."

I've seen that version listed too, but I have yet to FIND the darn thing. I've searched that specific ISBN and found a hit on Abebooks, that turned out to be in Dutch. Amazon has a couple listings under that ISBN and it too appears to be Dutch. So unless someone has actually seen an English translated version, I'm a little dubious that it actually exists.

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Hm. And how many of you are that crazily committed that you will trudge through them no matter what? ^^

I think I am. German isn't that much of a problem though, just a good dictionary I can handle that, but dutch can be interesting, although there are many similar words as Norwegian, so maybe not the worst.
French though...

message 12: by Nathan (new)

Nathan | 45 comments I could handle Spanish and to a lesser extent Portuguese and Italian.

message 13: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Wow!

Wish those non-english books were danish or swedish instead, that I could actually read as in real reading. Our languages are real similar. German has much in common, dutch too, but spanish, french, italian.. That would be hard.

Wish it were polish or russian, love those languages, would give a real reason to learn them^^

What I really hope though is that all of them will be translated in the next 20 years. I will probably save them for last.
