Diptanjan Sarma Purkayastha (goodreadscomnightwalker) I must confess, I have not been active in any Goodreads group for a very long time, but I do hope to find my place back in. As I read three Sherlock Holmes novels one after the other recently, I am creating this thread here, hope that's okay. The novels that I read are 'A Study in Scarlet', 'The Sign of the Four', and 'The Hound of the Baskervilles '. While I didn't like the first one, I really enjoyed HOUND. How many of you have read HOLMES? Which story is your favourite?

My favorite Holmes novel is The Sign of Four, but as far as a favorite short story, well, I really love all of them.

Some time ago, my husband gave me three huge volumes of Holmes stories (and the novels) - the slipcased editions of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes:

The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Short Stories and The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, Volume III: The Novels.

They're great editions.

Skye | 2105 comments I like the fact they have annotations: you are a real SH fan, aren't youo?

I am a huge fan.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments Love the Holmes stories. I have a rather well worn copy of The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes, about 1100 pages somehow holding together.

Skye | 2105 comments I am fascinated in a literary sense, if that makes sense. I also admit I have never been relatively neutral, but Nancy has sparked something which hasn't formulated in my mind, as yet, but it will.

I have lots of very well-loved books that are in that same condition -- "somehow holding together." And I can't bring myself to get rid of them.

@Skye: When you have time, you should definitely give SH a read -- Doyle's construction of the puzzles is something you need to experience.

Skye | 2105 comments Frankly, I am now more interested in this ( as well as other vintage mystery writers). there is a different rhythm in syntax and other devices: I recall years ago being very beguiled by books that had a gothic ambience.

If you enjoy gothic atmosphere I would highly recommend 'The Hound of the Baskervilles ' and The Haunting of Hill House. :)

Re The Haunting of Hill House: read the book! The movie doesn't even begin to capture what happens in the novel. One of my favorite books ever.

message 14: by R.M.F. (new)

R.M.F. Brown My favourite Holmes' story is the Red Headed League.

The best Holmes film in my opinion, is 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.'

If you love Holmes, and have never seen this film before, you're in for a treat.

I should mention that the Hammer Horror version of Hound of the Baskervilles (Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee) is also first class, and essential for any Holmes fan.
