Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11206 comments 25.9 - Elizabeth B's task: Roll of the Dice

During another GR challenge I participated I had to solve cryptograms in English. I was searching for statistical information regarding frequencies of the letters in the English language and found the following list - Frequencies of the letters in the English language:
1 - E - 12.51%
2 - T - 9.25%
3 - A - 8.04%
4 - O - 7.60%
5 - I - 7.26%
6 - N - 7.09%

For this task, you should roll two dice ONE time. You may choose to re-roll the dice ONLY if you get two of the same number or you may use the same number twice.

The numbers you roll will determine the target letters and how often the letters must appear in your book's title and/or subtitle.

Read TWO books, one Book 1 and one Book 2:

For Book 1- use the first number you rolled as the number of occurrences of the letter and the second number to select the letter from the list (from 1-6)

For Book 2- Switch the 2 numbers you rolled. The second number now determines the number of occurrences and the first number identifies the letter on the list

If you rolled a 2 and a 5 then for book A: Read a book that contains exactly 2 I (fifth letter in the list) in the title. For book B: Read a book that contains exactly 5 T (second letter in the list) in the title. Subtitles can be used or disregarded.

**Books with the genre Childrens or Kids as a main page genre may NOT be used for this task.**
Graphic novels/manga/collected comic books are allowed as long as they meet the task requirements.

REQUIRED: State the numbers you rolled when you post.

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments to make sure i understand right - i rolled 5, 4
5 = I; 4 times
4 = O; 5 times

message 6: by Cait S (last edited Jun 03, 2015 05:33PM) (new)

Cait S | 738 comments I have read this through at least 10 times and I'm pretty sure I still don't get it. I must be having One Of Those Nights.

I rolled a 4 and a 2.

Book 1= 4 T's in the title
Book 2= 2 O's in the title

Yes/no/not even close what are you doing, Cait?

message 7: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8954 comments that's how i understand it Cait

message 8: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 738 comments Cool, I'm gonna go with that for now then lol :D

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim | 762 comments A point of clarification. Do you have to include the subtitle or only include it if the title doesn't have all the needed letters?

I rolled a 2 and 6. For book 1 I need a book with two Ns. If the title has 2 Ns then I don't count the subtitle?

Thank you.

message 10: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (faeriesfolly) | 923 comments I feel like I just won gambling. lol. 3/2 I was nervous like money was on the line. XD (Now hopefully I understood correctly)

3 T's The Wrath and the Dawn

2 A's The Walls Around Us

message 11: by Pia (new)

Pia I got 1 & 2:
1 T
2 E

So this book would work for both Option 1 & 2?
Emotionally Weird by Kate Atkinson

Book 1:

Dust (Richard Jury, #21) by Martha Grimes

Balancing Act by Joanna Trollope

message 12: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 466 comments I'm jealous of you low rollers!

I rolled a 5 and 6, if I understand the rules, that means I need 5 n's and 6 i's, which if I can count, I think I've satisfied with

5 n's: Falling Leaves: The True Story of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter

6 i's: The Dance of Anger: A Woman's Guide to Changing the Patterns of Intimate Relationships

message 13: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (balletbookworm) | 915 comments I rolled a 3 and 5, so 3 I's and 5 A's (the A's were the toughest - I kept coming up with 4 or 6 but not 5) - I think I've got it.

Book 1, 3 I's: In the United States of Africa by Abdourahman A. Waberi
Book 2, 5 A's: Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper

I think I've counted that right.

I think you have it backwards (though it doesn't make much difference since your numbers are next to each other)

Book 1 - the FIRST dice tells you how many times; the second dice tells you which letter - so you would need 5 x letter # 4

Book 2 - the FIRST dice tells you which letter; the second dice tells you how many times - so you would need letter # 5, 4 times

message 22: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4448 comments I rolled 3, 2

Book 1 will have 3 of letter #2 (i.e. three T's)

Book 2 will have 2 of letter #3 (i.e. two A's)

Jonquil | 1059 comments First, the hunt was fun, thanks Elizabeth.
After I was successful, I found I was still counting vowels on store signs and license plates and food boxes. I wanted to share another one of those bizarre facts one only finds when searching for SRC books. On my quest for a book with exactly 6 A's, I was surprised how many of my books have exactly 4 A's. Now, I find myself pondering whether there's some way I could use that seemingly pointless fact to my advantage...
